Government shouldn't get involved with Twitter insults, Twitter are a private company and any horrible users who aren't reprimanded for posting sick shit in the long-term are the responsibility of Twitter moderators.

I presume it does, or at least managers that oversee the website. If it doesn't have moderators, then it makes sense for the company- at its own discretion- to administer its own rules. Just like Susie has its rules and regulations and people who uphold them, as we all know and consent to the rules by posting here, so too should Twitter bear responsibility. Why should a judge have to legislate on some cunt who was mouthing off online? If he's pissing enough people off, they will retaliate and Twitter-abuse him to the point of either surrendering his account via deletion, or spam up Twitter feeds to the extent that the website managers delete his account for him. Either way, I'm not comfortable with people being sent to prison for being cunts, even if they are guilty of that social crime.

The problem is that a lot of the people that get in 'uproar' about things like twitter abuse really just do not understand the internet.

Makes me cringe whenever I hear the news go on about 'trolling'

Problem is if nothing is done about it then it just gives the impression that its acceptable and it clearly isn't.

What you say on Twitter is the same as what you say on the street, in a legal sense. Say something illegal in public, and you'll get arrested, so don't expect any different on the internet. Basic common sense, to be honest.

The difference is the media doesn't create a shitstorm every time someone calls someone a cunt on the street. So government doesn't feel obligated to condemn it for fear of looking like they don't give a fuck. But they shouldn't give a fuck, they should be busy worrying about keeping stuff working rather that what Dave from Aldershot thinks about irrelevant pop stars.

There is nothing you should be able to say, short of threats and incitement of violence, that should be illegal in public. Any Twitter that is just harmless but dickish abuse, or in the case of some of the Twitter offenders, just horrible, dirty jokes about people too soon that left a bad taste in your mouth, should never be any sort of public offence.

I'm sort of obliged to agree with Jay here. If the system was so efficient that only the real cunts were being put away, then fair enough, but it sets a dangerous precedent where decent people who say the wrong thing from time to time can be unjustly put away. Remember that dude who jokingly threatened to blow up an airport when his flight was delayed, and was arrested over it? That's the shit I worry about, and I don't have enough faith in the system to trust that it can properly differentiate between those whose comments deserve persecution and those who don't.

By the logic of Twitter offenders, Frankie Boyle and Jimmy Carr should be in prison. The only difference between them and young people who have had their lives made miserable by four months behind bars is fame, fortune and a sense of humour, none of which ought to qualify as aspects of a character that differentiates between a criminal and a citizen.
