Selz is an easy scapegoat. He was bad, but Newcastle as a side looked fundamentally not good enough,

Besides I'm sure we'll see loads of criticism of Selz, but none of the cunt who played him. (He made Newcastle a football club again. He made us hope again)

We've had the discussions of a differing nature before here. But there's an odd all or nothing ethos - there's some who are blindly pro-Benitez they'll at worst overlook fuck-ups like these 2, but equally some who go "He's an overpaid shit manager who should fuck off". There's no in-between. Its weird. IMO we're probably better for having him then not, but equally there's responsibility. Even if calling Rafa a cunt for last night is odd - the 27 shots off target are the bigger explainer for that. Not to mention standard penalty shootout bottling.

Though it is amusing me more that Palace fans who this time last year were gloating about Pardew are now going "You know what? The Geordies were right" given he's doing more or less what he did at Newcastle at least 2 times.

I'm definitely being harsh on Benitez - because I can't stand the 'aura' around him - it's not his fault tbf. He's basically the club's ridicolous ego incarnate. It's led to everything becoming so overhyped and overrated. People fuming because Gayle and Shelvey aren't in the England squad - and insisting Matt Ritchie is better than Townsend was. Ciaran Clark probably isn't as good as Williamson - he couldn't handle Danny Graham at all last week - but that is completely ignored as the narrative is Benitez has solved all the problems.

He's only two points ahead of Chris Hughton (who was sacked for not being good enough)

And after all the conspiracy theories about how Ashley was demanding Newcastle finish 17th every season - Benitez has just thrown away a cup tie by playing a reserve keeper in a winnable quarter final against a shite team with ten men.

It's the absolute inverse of Pardew - where people would believe the worst to try and bend reality to fit perception. He left Newcastle in ninth with a team regularly featuring Obertan, Ameobi, Williamson, Abied, Alnwick and Riviere. People still hate him. Benitez is a miracle worker for being two points clear ahead of Brighton with about 20 times the budget.

Should have won last night, Gayle was rubbish and Selz was dire.

Outplayed a Premier league team for 80% of the game though which is a positive.

Comparing Benitez to Pardew is silly, though.

Big second leg tonight against Southampton! Thankfully its at home so I'm hoping the Anfield crowd will play a big part in helping us overturn the first leg result and get us into the Final. Although our form has been woeful as of late.

2 games in a row we lost to a team with 10 men behind the ball. No idea why we're fucking passing it around so slowly and taking so many touches, going sideways and backwards. When we moved it quicker and tried one twos it was causing them problems.

Was at the game and atmosphere wasn't the best for a weekday night, bit disappointed.

No idea where it went. But in any case I can repeat it: Jon Moss is a fucking woeful ref. Terrible on Sunday and he somehow got even worse tonight.

We were pretty poor tonight, Smalling and Jones in particular were terrible.

I'm pleased Gabbiadini seems to have settled quickly. I always liked him at Napoli, it just didn't ever look like it was going to work out for him no matter what he did. Still has so much potential and if he can stay confident and in the team then Southapton will have one hell of a bargain buy there.
