Clearly Mark Hughes' promise that Stoke would beat Newcastle after resting all their main attackers at Chelsea has aged well.

Not that we need to care. 3 points off a direct rival in this fight as part of 7 gained over this Christmas/NY period... rosier than it looked going into it after all those losses.

The thinness of the squad was exposed badly v Leicester. Worth remembering we've got a core of Premier League players and then the majority of the squad who are Championship players going beyond themselves. Could have been different if the Maguire incident had gone the other way as it could have done but I think Williams could have driven on and no complaints about the result.

Our need for wingers with end product was exposed - the biggest difference was simply that Albrighton and Mahrez were excellent for Leicester, combining threat with actual results. We need a number 10 and a winger in this window.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been charged following the West Bromwich Albion game on Sunday [31/12/17].

It is alleged his language and/or behaviour in the match officials’ changing room after the game was abusive and/or improper and/or questioned the integrity of the match referee.

He has until 6pm on Friday [05/01/18] to respond.

Wenger will get a touchline ban and Mike Dean will (arrogantly) walk free to carry on being an absolute c*nt.

Kasey Palmer recalled by Chelsea. Considering his injuries and lack of game time, it's not a surprise but it is a damned shame. On the plus side, does it open up the door to a return for Izzy Brown? Rumours abound that Chelsea are going to recall him from Brighton.

It's for the best. - Stavely is a bullshit merchant. - Everything she's associated with fails. At least Mike Ashley is risking his own capital. - He's tied to us whether he likes it or not.

Not to put too much on Staveley being the hope because in all truth I knew nothing about her before any of this, but what previous failures does she have? Only previous football thing I heard about with her possible involvement was being involved in the Man City takeover, which seems to have worked out well for them.

Bit vague that their company still seem to be saying the deal is on, but it seems likely that there was activity in October/November, then nothing since. If anything it feels reminiscent of Ashley's failed attempt to sell Newcastle after the first relegation in 2009.

According to Wikipedia her career makes no sense;

She buys a restaurant near Newmarker > Meets rich Arabs > Borrows money off them to open a Conference Centre > Sells 50% to EuroTelecom - who go bust claiming Conference Centre owes them money > Conference Centre goes bust > Moves to Dubai and opens a hedge fund. - At some point Liverpool seem unimpressed with her.

Looks to me she's started negotiations with Ashley - and then looked to people to essentially buy her the club. She's either got no money or doesn't want to spend it on Newcastle.

Martin Samuels, David Conn and Luke Edwards all have interesting articles - which all seem to some extent suggest the thing is a sham.

It seems sad that some people are still desperate for this - The Chronicle are still discussing how Newcastle are going to spend the £200m that Stavely is going to invest ffs.

My own presumption was that Staveley was some form of middle manager for an enterprise, which seems to have been the thing with the Reubens that was in one of the Conn articles. It wouldn't surprise me if there's previous involvement, given I seem to recall hearing the Sheikhs who bought Manchester City were sniffing around Newcastle shortly before they bought them. Whether that's an urban legend... dunno.

Certainly I'm also aware of the previous attempt by Staveley to buy Liverpool that Benitez was involved in, although given the High Court essentially forced Hicks and Gillett to sell Liverpool, it wouldn't have been that big a surprise they would've been turned down regardless of whether she was genuine or not.

While I'm fairly confident Ashley will not be in charge in 5-10 years time, I'm not so sure it will be through this one. I don't necessarily think that its a sham, but the whole thing is a strange and far more convoluted affair than it needs to be. Certainly moreso than the time Ashley bought it, but then no due diligence happened while Hall was desperate to sell, and I guess its not going to be the same structure.

Maybe it's best just to shove it aside for the moment and revisit it in the spring or summer.

So that's now 14 goals in 12 against Newcastle for Aguero... least we don't have another league game against him this season barring an improbable January transfer.

I suspect we've been sussed out whilst being our own worst enemies. Too pedestrian in possession, none of the zip and pace that made us a nightmare to deal with for so much of last season and the first 1/3 of this at home. Passing around pointlessly, missing runs in behind. No early balls into the box. Expecting Mooy to dictate play even when in a two against three. Throwing bodies forward and getting caught when we fall behind. We need to adapt our style.

Of course we can. We are Liverpool. We can do anything... except winning Premier League.
