It seems like on FM20 the 442 is one of the hardest systems to play against, and is also really common especially with weaker teams, which makes sense.

I do ok most of the time, but never really dominate a game. My most recent issue is coming up against a Simeone managed Chelsea, deploying 4 center-backs in defence. I'm finding it impossible to break down, and they just destroy me from counter-attacks and wingplay.

I play a 433, either flat midfield or with a DM.

Does anyone have any tips to counter 442?

Mostly I've found playing quite deep and passing directly while focusing down the middle, essentially the game will be quite dull but you might steal a goal with a long ball and striker running through. 4-4-2 is irritating, Peterborough destroyed my top of the table Doncaster team 5-0 with it even though I'd beaten better teams 8-2 and 6-1, it's crazy.

I found that a 3 at the back playing direct worked really well against 442, the wing backs seem to cause it a massive issue especially if you play a mezzala in cm. The 3 cb’s and a dm will also help stop you getting countered so easily.

Even if it’s not your preferred formation might be worth giving it a go.
