The first leg is important - we ideally need to take a 2/3 goal lead to Ukraine for the second leg. Not that the prospect of moneybags Anzhi in the Round of 16 is any better.

Going away to Eastern Europe is always hard, we'll get beat away from home imo

We were up against Metalist in the group stages and both games were fairly even tbh. Their style of play mainly relies on individual performances and qualities. You guys should absolutely be able to beat them. All them Argentinians and Brazilians can prove to be lethal when in the mood and on form mind.

Edit: Ah, Dutton beat me to it. Worth watching more than once though.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew admits he does not know much about their Europe League opponents Metalist Kharkiv.

United will host the first leg before a trip to Ukraine in the second and Metalist will be tough opponents - they won their qualifying group.

Asked what he knew about their next opponents, Pardew said: "Not much, really.

"I do know it's a long journey, I've had a look at that, and they won their group, so it's a tough agenda for us.

"It's a tough draw in terms of travel; the opposition, I know very little about. I can't even comment on that until such time as we do some studying."

I'm surprised he hasn't heard of them, We had two cracking matches against them a few years ago in the UEFA Cup.

Sparta Prague beat Athletic Bilbao into third place in their group so Chelsea won't have an easy affair either, even if they probably should progress.

To be honest, beating this year's Athletic into third isn't that hard. They've been shit.

Borussia Monchengladbach are going to be a tough side to get past, thankfully our manager looks to be taking the Europa League seriously so we should be able to at least make a game of it.

Will any of the English sides even take the competition seriously from this point?

I reckon Liverpool will. If Rodgers could win the Europa League it would be massive for him and probably give him some bargaining chips when it comes down to transfers next summer.

Yeah, of all the English sides left in the competition I can see Liverpool taking it the most seriously. Chelsea won't be fussed seeing as they won the Champions League little over six months ago, Spurs will be focused on fourth place and Newcastle will be desperate to improve in the league. I feel Liverpool and Rodgers have the most to gain from a decent cup run.

Rafa will want to win any trophy he can if he's only there until the end of the season, AVB loves the Europa too.

Depends on January - if we sign a few players and keep the remaining squad members then we'll have the scope to take it more seriously then we have been, but no signings or the expected 3 in 2 out means we probably will keep up our excuse for using this competition as gametime for youngsters and reserve players.

Especially if you're lingering in and around the bottom three.

Indeed. As well as tomorrow's outing, the games against Reading and Aston Villa that we have in January are crucial to avoiding the trap door.

Just been sent this:

Luis Suarez has said he will walk off the pitch if he hears any racist chanting.... He'd rather be in the stands joining in.

I'm glad some Liverpool fans are starting to notice this. He's a tidy player but he doesn't impose himself enough on games and can become a passenger at times.

3-4 years ago Tottenham v Lyon would be a very good game, but today i can't see it being that good.

He's about as useful as Carrick *dig at United*

Nah in all fairness I'd like him to model his game on Carrick's. Atm he's really not contributing to the team at all.

Looked like a dreadful offside call against us.

Looked miles onside unless I'm missing something

What the fuck is that bullshit with the wooden boardings in front of the "dugout" that you have to walk through to get to pitch side?

Viktoria Plzen just beat Napoli 3-0 away, and are only continuing their impressing Europa League campaign having won their group ahead of Atletico Madrid.

Newcastle should be 1-0 up, linesman ruling out a perfectly good Cisse goal.

Decent game though, both sides have had their chances.
