He's not behaved like Dalglish did during the Suarez racism scandal but Martinez's behaviour has been absurd to the point of disrespectful. Surely an apology is at least the basic we can get.

Look at Dalglish et al. wearing the Suarez shirts last season for an example of how far a manager will go to publicly defend one of his players.

In some ways I think it's his intention to make himself the focal point, the bad guy, of the drama, to deflect the attention from a player he maybe thinks would struggle with a lot of media criticism coming his way.

Mourinho and Ferguson are similar examples of managers making them the focus of media scrutiny (although usually in less contentious situations) to shield the players from the media. Not that I'm saying Martinez is on par with those two as a manager. It just seems like this long after the whole thing he would alter his stance somewhat, if he was concerned with his own image, given there's been a lot made of how poorly he and Wigan have dealt with the situation and generally I think he comes across as a fairly intelligent man.

Mmm, that's a good point. Martinez is a clever guy and I wouldn't be surprised if he was doing his bit to deflect attention away from McManaman and onto himself. He won't give two shits what the public make of his comments if it takes the heat off of his young player.

He's not going to turn on his own player, especially when you consider their squad isn't that big.

You don't have to turn on the player, just say the tackle was unacceptable and move on.

I'm sure McManaman knows himself what he done was incredibly stupid and ridiculous - so much so he delibrately handballed the ball out of play 30 seconds later so Haidara could get treatment.

PS: As of Thursday - eleven days after the incident - Alan Pardew confirmed that nothing in the form of an apology had been forthcoming from either Wigan, their manager or their player.

Martinez has done the exact same as Dalglish did, backed the player 100%, not apologised and claimed to be the victim. Well apart from the t-shirts.

This.

Martinez's comments about McManaman being the victim were silly, but he's nowhere near the idiocy of Dalglish.

Although an apology from the club or McManaman I think would have been nice.

The Suarez incident should have seen Liverpool banned from football (Kick Racism from Football). A tackle is far different

Nani back on the bench today, aww yis. Hopefully Valencia converts his international promise into a performance that isn't so bad I want to rip out my scrotum in anger.

Quite an average performance, but we're winning and that's all that matters. Another goal would be nice.

Ashley Young continues to be incredibly poor.

Sunderland look pretty devoid of ideas - their best hope is to probably keep it at 1-0 and nick a goal off a set-piece.

As soon as United get their second, it's game over.

RVP's yellow was his 5th of the season, does he miss the City game? Didn't have the sound on when he got it.

I don't think so, there's been no mention of it.

Gervinho scores for Arsenal.

Terrible defending, the Reading players need to get stuck in on Gervinho, he's Gervinho ffs.

Looks like they've given up on the game anyway.

I think theres a cut off point where you need 10 not 5 before you get banned.
