I watched Wolverine on the weekend, pretty decent for a superhero movie.

I was disappointed in it really. I've been a big fan of this new Marvel wave but that just didn't quite fit

I kinda liked God Only Forgives. Certainly a lot more dreamy and slow than Drive but I liked the weird relationship between Gosling and his mother, and the policeman character was so interesting. All the Greek tragedy/religious thematic strings were all really fascinating but ultimately I'm not totally convinced it all works.

The sleeze of Bangkok and the way it's captured plus the awesome soundscape kept me interested; wether I strictly enjoyed it though is another question.

I'm definitely enjoying thinking about it more now than when I actually watched it. It's pretty cool that Refn would follow-up his most successful 'hit' with something so distinctly his vision.

Other than that go see Frances Ha, because, you know, Noel Baumbach and that.

Could be very interesting.

YES I want to see this so bad. Has a cool Eternal Sunshine vibe that I'm totally game for. Interested to see how Ben Stiller does as director too. I know as an actor he's not been confined to comedy but it's kinda a departure for him as a filmmaker.

Well after Bronson he did Valhalla Rising, so it wasn't unexpected.

It's a classic Refn move. He did Fear X after Pusher and Bleeder as well. Also Pusher 3 was a lot more slowburning than 1 and 2.

Anyway, the year is sort of shaping up. We've got Jonze, Coens, Scorsese, O. Russell, Von Trier all coming out this second half of the year.

Only God Forgives.

Quite terrible. Refn needs to put out a film that has character progression and an actually story again.

I hope you're not referring to Drive when you're saying that.

Drive is a very simplistic film in terms of story, the brilliance of that film was in how it used music, colours, contrast and general style to tell it, scale that away and you've got a pretty forgettable film about a half-mute criminal.

My general thought on Only God Forgives is that Refn saw the success of Drive and thought "Hey, I managed to pull off a film with the Driver as the protagonist off, I wonder if I could do the same with a film where every character is a silent stooge just like him?".

Refn is a genius with the purely visual side of cinema, it's a shame that he seems to be forgetting the human side of it, especially when his earlier work with the Pusher films dealt with that side so well. If he could put together the stylistic brilliance from Drive with the humanity of a film like Pusher 2 we could get an all-time classic.

It's called Bleeder.

A film like Drive doesn't work if you don't manage to handle the human aspect of it, then you end up with a film like Only God Forgives.
You care about the characters, and The Driver does evolve. You may go on about a simplistic story, but a film like Dog Day Afternoon has an incredibly simple story as well. It's about how you handle it.
