In Football Manager 2016 all players are given a current and potential ability rating between 0-200. This helps to determine how good a player is going to become in the future and for the most part acts as a 'ceiling' defining the maximum ability a player can reach. This helps to ensure that not just any kid from League One can become the next Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

Some players in the game have a random potential ability, meaning that their potential may be defined as being anywhere from 160-190 out of 200 rather than a fixed potential of 175. So each time you start a game the players ability will be set as some number between 160 and 190 and it will be different each time. A player with a random potential between 160-190 has the potential to be as good as Lionel Messi in one career and but only ever as good as Tomas Rosicky in another.

Random Potential Abilities are signified by minus numbers, in past versions of the game these ranged from 0 to -10, but in FM2016 this has been expanded to include increments of 5 between each random number. Here's a brand new break down of what each range each random potential ability equates to in FM2016:

-10 = 170-200 PA
-9.5 = 160-190 PA
-9 = 150-180 PA
-8.5 = 140-170 PA
-8 = 130-160 PA
-7.5 = 120-150 PA
-7 = 110-140 PA
-6.5 = 100-130 PA
-6 = 90-120 PA
-5.5 = 80-110 PA
-5 = 70-100 PA
-4.5 = 60-90 PA
-4 = 50-80 PA
-3.5 = 40-70 PA
-3 = 30-60 PA
-2.5 = 20-50 PA
-2 = 10-40 PA
-1.5 = 0-30 PA
-1 = 0-20 PA
0 = 0-200 PA
