I'm normally rooting for Newcastle in these derbies but I'm happy for Di Canio today.

I don't think I've ever seen such a cowardly, rotten, spineless, useless performance from us in one of these games. Fans are arguing Pardew should be fired on the evidence of this and frankly I have no argument to oppose this

Sacking our manager based on one performance isn't the way forward

I've got this feeling that Ashley will follow the Southampton school of thought and bring in a foreign manager to replace Pardew.

French probably, in fact.

I accept that and I do think it would be rash to sack him now. But that's the only opposing argument I have, and when we confirm we're in the Prem for next season, change manager.

I hate united, but I hate stoke as well and considering that the title is won I'm actually hoping for a united win to send stoke down!

Vaughan's goal, magic.

Wouldn't mind Stoke going down either, it's probably between them, Villa and Wigan now.

aye i think most would like Stoke to be down, between them and Wigan for sure, Villa are looking a bit better.

Good early goal to ease the nerves

Well, fair play to Di Canio - he showed the passion our squad collectively did not.

Urgh. Newcastle fans are all pathetic. 'Commitment', 'passion' etc. Leave on 80 minutes.

Shame both teams couldn't lose. Sunderland fans were worse wishing death on Steven Taylor again. And there was a smoke cannister thrown which could have done some serious damage if it someone. Someone should go to jail for that.

great ball from Hernandez there, definitely need another goal though.

need to take Valencia or Kagawa off, both been very poor, Ferdinand worrying me at the back aswell

The smoke cannister did do damage, I sit not far away from there and a lad had to be taken out as he was coughing too much. Lad it hit was bleeding too.

We were shite there too. Best team won.

Went over my head at a decent pace. I don't know, I thought Newcastle were awful, but Sunderland were worse.

I hope Sunderland get actual sanctions about it. And the police actually do something.

Newcastle fans were warned about their behaviour prior to the game as there was speculation they could taunt Di Canio with fascist salutes given his political past.
But thankfully, the game was remembered for the performance on the pitch in a highly-charged atmosphere as Sunderland withstood first-half pressure to take control.

Shocking from the BBC. Violence is OK, but not a 'taunt'.

Nah, we were outplayed there I thought.

Cabaye and Tiote were hopeless in centre midfield. Danny Graham had Mbiwa all over the place too.

Cabaye didn't look fit. Big mistake by Pardew playing Cabaye and Ben Arfa.

Thought Tiote did OK.

Rose, Sessegnon and Mignolet player very well, but the rest of them didn't seem to play well.

not a great performance yet again but a win is a win and it was definitely a bit of a step up. A few players had poor games but Rooney, at times, did look very good in midfield. Nice to see Robin get back on the scoresheet too, hopefully he can kick on

A good performance. We looked in control.

Rooney played very well, Kagawa was good, Valencia had a decent game - which is an improvement for him.

An important win.

A police officer needed hospital treatment and 27 people were arrested after Newcastle United fans caused chaos in the city centre following their side's Tyne-Wear derby defeat.

Police were forced to close off Central Station Metro temporarily, but it reopened again around an hour later.

Newcastle supporters were seen setting light to wheelie bins, throwing glass bottles, and chucking firecrackers at police officers and police horses.

Our cameras also captured clashes between Newcastle supporters and mounted police at the junction of Gallowgate and St James' Boulevard, in a separate video below.
