Apparently Hull are closing to signing Costel Pantilimon.

He'd be a good signing.

I thought Hull's main target was Kasper Schmeichel, though I think it flashed up on Sky that Leicester have told them to get stuffed.

Aren't Defoe and Adebayor Spurs' only out and out strikers atm?

Yes. They need another one anyway so unless they have 3 replacements in mind that's a bit of a gamble.

Hopefully in their pursuit of Leandro Damiao they don't forget to sign his backups.

I assume Vilas Boas has a specific left-back in mind to replace him with because he's a first-team regular, and decent too.

Rose, with Naughton back up I would imagine.

Yeah, I think they've had a few bids rejected. I suspect Pantilimon is/was the back-up option. If it happens, I think he'd be a great signing.

We're being linked with Lazio's Stefan Radu, for what must be the 6th transfer window in a row. Is he that good?

People are taking that Spurs list seriously? It's obviously just a mixture of the tabloids and who's been linked with moves away.

Yeah, Rose was one of the best players at Sunderland this season.

Well Friedel signed a new contract at the end of the season so it's unlikely that he will leave. Assou-Ekotto was really bad this season, same with Walker, compared to last season. Adebayor should fucking leave, excepting his form at the end of season he has been totally useless.

I think that entire list is about right. Just because they are deemed surplus doesn't mean they will leave either. They will just be kept around until they are replaced and they all need to be.

Club sources are apparently saying that Cabaye is not about to join Monaco for £23.75M, though they're also saying Mike Williamson is close to finalising a £2M move to Cardiff City.

He'd be a decent signing for you lot but wouldn't improve the first 11, I think his main selling point is he can play CB and LB in a back 4, on the left of a back 3. Also, unlike Kolarov he can actually defend.

Personally I think it's bullsh*t to fill space, he's happy in Rome, a key part of the first team, tied down to a longterm contract and we've no need to sell players to raise money.

With all that in our favour Lotito will screw you guys over the transfer fee, there's no way you'll get anything like value for money, I mean Kolarov wanted to leave and the fans didn't like him yet Lotito still made you pay over the odds and throw in Garrido.

Isco seems to be our next signing to add to the Spanish players already at Man City. City going to be the new Arsenal instead of lots of French but Spanish instead??

It does sound like bullshit and his agent has since denied there's been any bid.

For the life of me I still cannot understand how we paid £17m for Kolarov.

I thought it was just a textile thing that entered figurative speech. What does it mean in cooking?

Smoking actually, not cooking. When kippers are made. Kippers are smoked herrings. They are "butterflied" ie split down the belly, get rid of all the crap, and then are put on hooks in the smoke house. The hooks are tenterhooks. This is where the word comes from.

Bet you didnt know you would learn about word etymology on a football forum, did you?

That's not etymology, you're just showing how you know what the word is.

Etymology is explaining how the word tenterhook came to exist, so you'd need to describe what a tenter and then explain why it's called a tenter. A cursory glance at google should help you out.

I went ahead and did the googling.

Tenter comes from the french word tenet, which means "principle," properly "a thing held (to be true)". This itself comes from the latin word tenet, which means "he holds".

That's etymology.

Fanny nailed it.

Another theory is it comes from the Latin tendere - to stretch and extend.
