Squad that finished 5th, less Guthrie, Best, Smith, Lovenkrands, Ranger, Ba, Perch, Simpson and Harper

+ Sissoko, Haidara, Gouffran, Yanga-Mbiwa, Debuchy, Anita and Bigirimana, Plus massive improvements from Elliot, and hopefully a fit HBA. + a few younger players who might step up, and Ferguson, Vuckic and Ameobi being a couple of years older.

Newcastle have generally improved the squad over the past year. Best, Smith, Lovenkrands and Harper left because they weren't going to get much game time, Ranger was unlikely to amount to much and Newcastle replaced Guthrie and Simpson with Dutch and French internationals.

I'm still annoyed at getting rid of Perch though. Aaron Hughes mk II.

If Newcastle survived last year and brought in the five January transfers in July, people would be super excited for the new season.

I think a lot of fans are on a downer for the fact last season was a near-complete fuck up and we still need a new striker or two (maybe just the one if Gouffran can provide something good in attack). Though a lot of people outside the fanbase seem to think we're favourites for a surprise relegation fight, which is bollocks as the squad should be more than better than that.

Yeah I think we're a lot better than people are making out. We can't really judge anyone signed in January yet as they were thrown into a relegation scrap halfway through the season with no Premiership experience. I don't think we've been that static in the transfer market either, it's obvious we're after a striker and I think the reason they've taken so long is because we've missed out on our first choice targets with the likes of Aubameyang and Carroll going elsewhere.

Think Pardew's poor tactics last season have added to that. I don't think you'll be near the relegation zone mind.

I suppose we couldn't really compete with Dortmund for Aubameyang. The despair is probably reinforced by the fact that there's been a fair amount of gossip as to our targets - Sky Bet putting us odds-on to sign Scott Sinclair, for example - only for it to be revealed as bollocks.

But who knows - there's still time. Guess its just hoping we can now get somebody in.

There were 3 main issues last year:
1. Injuries
2. Pardew
3. Players underperforming

If we can get beyond those (or failing that 1 and 3) then we can be making some progress.

Assume all transfer news as bollocks. Or ignore it completely. I find it extremely annoying, when people talk about being 'beaten to targets' when Newcastle probably weren't interested anyway. - Or weren't willing to pay the asking price.

Man United want Cesc? If the club rejected two offers, I will reject it a third time. Cesc will be here."

"It's normal United are interested, it's an honour, but we count on Cesc and we won't sell, no matter the offer."

Ain't happening. Mourinho's already said he isn't for sale and Luiz has himself not too long ago dismissed any desire to move.

Recycled dribble.

Basically his approach is respectable at a smaller club (reletively speaking, not saying Everton are a small club) and just shitty now he has the weight of a massive club behind him.

I wouldn't go so far as to compare him with Pepe but he is, quietly, a very dirty player.

I don't think it's very quiet anymore, after Aguero tried to snap him in half for being a cunt everyone noticed.

Speaking of Pepe, rumours going round that Monaco want him and Rui Patricio from Sporting.

We're interested in Pepe too (which is really confusing for me) Monaco would make sense though. They are part a Jorge Mendes club after all.

Dynamo Kyiv have done some interesting transfers this summer, Belhanda, Mbokani, Lens, Trémoulinas and now Dragovic.

Shakhtar and their legion of Brazilians will probably still waltz home the title though.

Goal.com (I know, but it's Veysey and he's one of their actual reporters) also reporting Luiz to Barca - £25M.

He cost us like 22/23m.

I doubt it.

Plus Matic. Which is a few extra million on top.

Mourinho on Luiz.

‘For me, Luiz is a central defender,’ said Mourinho. ‘He can help the team playing in another position but he’s a central defender, no doubt about it.

‘I know Ivanovic is very comfortable in the centre but I see him and Cesar Azpilicueta as our two right backs. Our defensive group will be good.’

As he praised the “amazing, incredible potential” of David Luiz, adding he “has to play always."

The manager spoke glowingly about David Luiz's abilities as a centre-half but added that, defensively, "he can be much more effective, much more solid, even if the potential is incredible".

He won't be sold.
