I see Peter Herbert is embarrassing himself again.

Good, I missed him.

The man's an idiot.

Lallana and Rodriguez really deserve their opportunities.

Good to see Lallana in there, been quality this season.

Not sure why Lambert is there though.

I'm a very proud Southampton fan today. Three players called up is great - Lallana and Rodriguez very much deserve the opportunity. Lambert, though he hasn't been quite as lethal this season so far, still deserves a place in the squad. (Though I'm biased...)

Decent squad, nice to see Lallana get some recognition. Can't see a good reason why Defoe/Welbeck/Cleverley have been picked though.

Completely agree. You could argue that Welbeck is picked because of his England form rather than his United form, but Cleverley has been pretty anonymous in between squad announcements for United, and Defoe hasn't pushed his way in front of an underwhelming Soldado. What other options do England currently have up front instead though? You don't want to over-promote a youngster for no reason, or bring back somebody who is not going to be anywhere near consideration for the World Cup squad.

Also, surely Gareth Barry is more deserving of a call-up than Cleverley?

He is. At 32, though, I can kinda see the logic in leaving him out.

I guess, but Hodgson's been more than happy to call up those in their early thirties since he took the reigns.

Yeah but if you include him over Cleverley then you're looking at having 4 central-midfielders over the age of 30 in the squad. That's at least one too many.

Fair enough, but Barry has still had a much better season than Cleverley.

I entirely agree. Cleverley's a thoroughly average player.

Cleverly. Trying to let that sink in in a serious manner but I just can't take it it seriously hahaha. He's a joke, completely overrated. If he played for anyone else he wouldn't even get a look in.

For him to be over-rated that would surely imply that people actually rated him.

Cleverley is okay, in fairness to him I've always thought he would look like a much better player if he was playing for a smaller club.

I don't think there's anything really there though, potential wise. If anything he's been regressing the more he's been playing with our first team.

He's decent and people are too harsh on him, but I don't think there's indication to think he's going to become a much better player than he currently is, other than the fact he's still 'only' 24.

Tom Cleverley at 24 years old ought to be better than he is now. He's not a bad player, but at most, ought to be a squad player for United. The problem I have with Cleverley's involvement with the England squad is not that he's not good enough to be part of it, but that he's been pretty average for us this season, and if he can get into the squad regardless of form, then he's being over-estimated. I also think that Gibson's shooting and through balls were better than Cleverley's, for what he lacked in dynamism during his time at Old Trafford in comparison. Even when Tom Cleverley was at Wigan, he didn't look head and shoulders above the other midfield options they had at the time, so the argument that he'd look really good in a weaker side doesn't hold too much water, unless you're of the opinion that he has massively improved in the last 18 months.

Gibson was never a 'bad' player. He just got a lot of abuse for not being a United quality player but I remember me and someone else (Jumberto maybe) saying that he would do well when Mikel and Deano were pretty pissed that they'd signed him.

Cleverley the better player though and is probably a better passer of the ball and reasonably mobile, I think the problem is that his best attribute is his one touch passing which is suited to playing higher up the pitch, but he's not really good enough to play that role for United or England.

I was away for the weekend so missed all the football. Caught like 10 minutes of the England game, and that was it.
