Would be tempted to stick Clyne as starting winger - just to try and get some sort of natural width.

England's biggest problem is Hodgson has picked a disastrous 23. One pure holding midfielder, one winger, no 'controlling' midfielders, 4 central strikers - three of whom are very similar, several 'number 10's' when we don't play with any. What is the benefit of having Wilshere, Henderson and Milner on the bench at the same time? What possible football scenario calls for that

Chris Coleman has been historically poor manager, but at least he decided how Wales can play to their strengths and picked 23 players according to that plan.

England just play with absolutely no cutting edge.

Hopefully this will be the end of attempting to play like Spain. We look panicked whenever Wales stand off.

Anyone else feeling totally depressed by the actions in America and Europe this week?

Two psychotics in Orlando, and a feeling that the rest of Europe has seemingly completely failed at integration.

Germany really lacking some diversity in their team imo.

Ozil for example showed how magnificent he is in the final minute when given a bit of space. But him Gotze, Draxler, Muller, Draxler, Kroos all a bit similar.

Andros Townsend from what I've seen for Newcastle and England is a far better player than most.

Anecdotal evidence but Wales' Neil Taylor and Ben Davies have both been absolutely unable to get anywhere near him, never mind tackle him within the last 3 months. But still I'd rather have Ross Barkley.

Christ, the reporting surrounding the England fans is absolutely abysmal.

Guardian journalists seem to think singing singing about Brexit is worse than foreigners doing actual crimes. One of them has complained about England 'wasting police time'. - yet there has been no

Aston Villa are absolutely miles better than Derby tbf. Derby's best times in the past decade and a half are under either Steve McClaren or Billy Davies. They made Bradley Johnson there record signing!

Middlesbrough went up last season comfortably despite their manager having a massive huff. Burnley and Brighton were 2nd and 3rd despite having absolutely nothing aside from running around.

Koeman has clearly been pissed off at Southampton for a while now tbf. I don't think Southampton we're that far from hitting danger - and another summer of possibly selling Mane and Wanyama etc. and gambling on new guys probably isn't the most attractive proposition.

Thank you Hodgson for being so hopeless and inept for leaving out Townsend. Hope everyone just sorts of forgets about him now.

PSV v Atletico - Zoet & Oblak didn't get near a single pen then either.

Real, Inter, Liverpool and Chelsea all winning the Champions League within a year of Rafa getting appointed. I like those chances.

Are people really forgetting how awful Ferguson and Wenger were to referees - they attacked them constantly to try and create a climate of fear of giving decisions against them.

"You've got to learn how to lose. They should learn how to lose around here." - The same thing can be said about Jose that's for sure.

Yeah I mean look at how successful those clubs are....

Really the ideal system is zero parachute payments - it would cause a fantastic situation of 17 PL Clubs and three rotating clubs on loan from the second tier for the season. Is it really economic for Middlesbrough to sign Viktor Fischer? Would it not make more sense for him to sit on the bench at Everton, and perhaps Boro can get Stephen Ward or Hunt instead?

No doubt Huddersfield will be giving back the extra solidarity payment from Burnley getting promoted?

You'll probably find that it was Mourinho's people bringing that up to keep his name and relevance out there. As much as Mourinho has done for Chelsea, and as much as I like the man, he's very much someone who likes the attention to inflate the ego he has.

Yeah that's what I mean - Mourinho basically putting pressure on Man Utd to hurry and do the deal as he has offers....

Then again I'm always skeptical that this level of really obvious 'mind games' actually happens. I'd imagine everyone in football already knows when deals are done - and Ed Woodward for example probably know where Morata / Lukaku / Stones etc. will be on September 1st.

What's Woodward's supposed position on this? Isn't he supposed to be very pro-Van Gaal?

If so possibly hoping to wait until the last possible moment to hope LVG turns it around?

And obviously the Mourinho to Valencia / Inter rumours etc. suggest that the deal wan't done from Man Utd's perspective.

Re. Jose leaving Inter in a mess - it's a half truth - it was an aging squad that he managed to grind out a Champions League trophy with.

I'm not sure who was in charge of the signings at Inter, but their first season signings seem pretty bad, Crespo, Muntari, Mancini, Quaresma and Luis Jimenez - can't recall any of those doing anything for Inter.

But second season was all funded by player sales, Zlatan was sold, and Vieira, Cruz, Figo and Crespo all left. Milito, Eto'o, Lucio (were all outstanding signings - but all in their later stages of their careers), Sneijder and Motta were excellent signings as well.

But looking at their team, Julio Cesar, Toldo, Lucio, Materazzi, Samuel, Chivu, Maicon, Zanetti, Cambiasso, Millito, Eto'o, Stankovic & Ivan Cordoba all aged 28+ and Mariga and Muntari not really good enough imo.

Meaning the squad of Sneijder, Balotelli, Pandev and the suspended Thiago Motta being the only players the following managers could really rely on going forwards - a bigger worry would be he got rid of Leonardo Bonucci, and kept 4 CB's all aged 32+....

Yes?

I don't see the point of Arsenal's obsession with qualifying for the sake of qualifying, but I like to see my club win things. Its hard to win competitions you don't take part in.

Yeah but you got knocked out in the group stages by PSV and Wofsburg. - If Man Utd scraped 4th they're unlikely to much better next season

Like obviously winning it is good - and if lets say Thomas Muller was wiling to come only on the condition of already being in the CL then fair enough.

Why does everyone care so much about European football anyway?

I understand caring about it if you're shit but Liverpool are normally there are they really going to miss a season of Europa that's probably playing weakened sides until the last 16 and get knocked out of Benfica? - arguably it's better for Liverpool as thy can concentrate solely on the league and Klopp can do what he wants to do.

Same with Man Utd and the Champions League - Do you's really care that much about it?

This is Alan Shearer you're talking about..

You're laying into Shearer and you were on Rafa's back after a couple of games yet you've never said a bad word about Mike Ashley or Pardew - doesn't make sense?

Plus I'm sure it was just Lineker who claimed that Shearer said that (probably ages ago), unless I misheard all Shearer said tonight about his reign was that he was the 4th manager that season.

I've said several bad words about Pardew and Ashley.

Shearer implied twice yesterday that this relegation mirrored the last one perfectly. With him in the Benitez role. Kinnear is a far better manager than Shearer and had a heart attack. Was Ashley meant to stop him having a heart attack?

Benitez has thankfully turned the corner since the Southampton game - but his weeks of dithering has relegated Newcastle. I hope Benitez stays as I'd rather him have control than the board - and I think he's the best bet at getting towards the upper echelons of the League. - He's shown hints of his class.

But Benitez has still made mistakes; two points from Villa, Norwich and Sunderland isn't good and 'serenading' him for being unable to overturn a one point deficit and achieve a 30% win ratio whilst for example this was being written about Pardew two years ago;

So under Alan Pardew it is an overall record of played 147 matches and won 55, a win percentage of 37% (around 14 wins per season).

The general belief is that Mike Ashley simply wants Newcastle to survive in the Premier League and bank the TV money, with Alan Pardew you can claim that overall the manager has delivered that, though it has been a management spells of extremes, fifth in 2011/12 leading to a close call with relegation the following season

If you are happy with just surviving in the Premier League then maybe Alan Pardew is the manager for you.

However, if like me you believe that Newcastle have punched well below their weight under Pardew and are capable of challenging for more than survival, then you have to accept that the stats ‘prove’ that Alan Pardew is not the man for Newcastle United.
