Never a red card.

With the amount of teams beating us for the first time, it's not exactly a rarity this season, is it?
Mata is a huge signing, a lot of times when big clubs buy big players they focus on them. It's normal.
And everything we do this season is going to be under the microscope. That's including signings.

Mid table obscurity and no cups is an above average season for Newcastle.
Sam
Exactly, record breaking, it isn't surprising.
But let's all remember, Fergie never lost a match as manager of United.
It was to be expected, one bad season and the media jumping at the chance to put him under pressure. In the long run we're going to be fine. He was given a six year contract for a reason, despite us fans having the right to moan (especially with poor performances, I was expecting not to win the league and lose a few times) calling for him to be sacked would be idiotic.

Its bizarre - he basically brushes the top of his head. I can see why Webb may have thought it was an elbow given the replay from his angle, but its still a dumb decision.
VP.
I certainly cannot believe anyone expected or can accept the season to be as bad as it has so far. Plus i think its gonna take longer than just one season and a couple of new players to sort this out and i still firmly believe Moyes is not good enough to manage Manchester United.
Sam
I meant it was going to be expected that'd be put under pressure if he was to have a bad season, no one was expecting it to be this bad, but it definitely wasn't going to be good.
Moyes will eventually prove doubters wrong, one bad season immediately after replacing one of the greatest managers in history, it wasn't going to be easy. He needs time and support. Some of the stuff that has happened is inexcusable, but he has my backing. Sacking him would be stupid.

Not when we have the players and the income to be far better than that.
We're soon at risk of losing the players though as any of our good ones are sold without replacement.
I don't understand why you support Newcastle if you don't want us to be good, it's baffling.

I read somewhere Cabaye was among players baffled we didn't buy any more than Anita in the build-up to last-season, and certainly at the time fans expected more than just one holding midfielder that Pardew largely didn't bother. Him leaving was inevitable but its galling that we have the nexus of a quality squad that could be broken up quickly due to this lack of interest in progression or advancement. Its already known we will be the only Premier League side ever to fail to make a permanent first team transfer in a season in a season where we already have earned about £82M from TV money and player sales. Even with the idea of making this last for wages and expenses, there should be enough to fund an additional player.
This seems to be why the Ashley out crowd is gaining momentum. They do have a point in that it questions why people bother if all the club exists for is to let Ashley take back every investment he made on us, and to function as free-advertising for SportsDirect and associate brands.

It's looking like this is the case.
The squad is nowhere near as bad as its looking under Moyes either.
Sam
The squad was shit before he arrived, Fergie got the best out of it. He was wrong on one thing: the squad he left was not in good shape. Our two main center backs are on their last legs, Evra is on his last legs. Our midfield has been weak for ages, Anderson and Hargreaves were the last CMs we bought I think, that says a lot.
Plus, we've had quite a few injuries this season. It's way too early to assess if Moyes is good enough yet. Patience is needed.
Ninja
There were issues, but we absolutely walked the league and were an absolute bollocks decision against Nani away from knocking Madrid out of Europe.
With the exception of Rooney, perhaps, every single player is performing worse this season than last season. We are losing on regular occasions against teams that we are far better than.
Apart from the fact that it worked 26 years ago and Fergie said to support him, what has Moyes done to prove he's a United manager?
In fact, how many good performance have we managed all season? Swansea 4-0 on the first day, Leverkusen home and away and errr? Thats the depressing thing, I genuinely believe Moyes when he says he thinks we are playing well and doesn't know why we are losing, because I think this is the vision of Manchester United he has.
Maybe I'm being harsh, maybe he needs the summer and he'll come back looking like a Bisela/Pep/Klopp hybrid but I don't think he has the tactical nous nor the motivational ability required to coach top players, and I find quotes from the likes of Mirallas saying that under Martinez they 'train a lot more with the ball' as worrying statements on Moyes training methods.
If I'm honest with myself although I've been convincing myself he's the right man for the job because he was the man who was picked these are all the reservations i felt about him on the day Ferguson retired. The fact he's done nothing in 7 months to dispel that notion, makes me want to kill myself every time he opens his mouth (I mean can you imagine him giving a half time team talk and trying to motivate you?) and the only argument for him getting longer has absoloutly nothing to do with anything on the pitch whatsover should worry you.
Oh and in hindsight, I don't think we played that well against Swansea.

We were good in the league, but everybody else was shit. Do you think we would have done just as well last season if Carrick, RVP and Rooney were out as much as they have been this season? Scholes' influence has gone as well. I remember 2003/04 we lost nine times in the league, we lost 3-1 at home to Fulham, we lost 1-0 to Wolves. Bad seasons happen.
We weren't amazing last season, how often did we go a goal down in the opening five minutes? We came back well because of Fergie. Moyes is still making his mark, he needs time, he hasn't managed a club of this magnitude before, a club which has just lost it's manager of 26 years, one of the greatest managers in football history. It's bound to have some affect on the players, no one had Fergie's influence.
We've needed a new CM for years, Fergie didn't bring one in. Moyes tried in the summer but the board were too concerned in getting a big name in and it backfired massively. And then Moyes had to pay more for his probable first choice, Fellaini, at the last minute, giving him no pre season with the club.
I'm not going to deny that on the pitch we have been unspectacular, the manner of our defeats and the lack of creativity getting forward and all that, but I'm prepared to be patient. Moyes will get it right, we're all allowed to moan, but all us United fans should all stand by him, he deserves the chance to turn things around.
I really want him to do well, and I really believe he will.
Jamieandhisego
I'm sorry, but if any one of Mourinho, Guardiola, Klopp or Ancelotti became the next United manager in the summer, you could argue that expectations for this season would have actually been higher than the previous one. Do fans think we would have only brought in Fellaini? Do you think we would find it difficult to play decent football? Do you think players would look so demotivated, or uninspired under any of those managers?
I feel like we've put a manager who is potentially good enough for United into the job, rather than someone United should be lucky to have. It all depends on the summer. If we get to the final week of the summer transfer window, and fans aren't jizzing their pants over who we've recruited, he's got a real problem on his hands.

I know you're being facetious, but that's somewhat the problem.
Moyes is by no means a bad manager; I think he's probably a rather good one. I'm sure if it doesn't work out here then he'll go to Spurs or someone of that ilk and do a rather good job.
But I don't think 'good' was good enough, I do like Jaygull's analogy that it was a punt on 'potential' but when you're picking a 50 year old manager who has no real football philosophy, no real charisma, and no real leadership ability (and lets be honest, Moyes was only picked because Ferguson saw a lot of himself in Moyes) to replace arguably the greatest football manager thats ever lived then its generous to describe it as much more than a punt.
I like Moyes, I really do, I think he's a genuine guy and I attach no blame to him for whats gone on this season, if he has the ability to turn it around then I really hope he can, but I've seen no evidence to suggest he can but I can't help but feel like we've chucked a guy with no arms or legs in at the deep end and asked him to sink or swim.
And why have they been out injured so much? Van Persie's suffered from strains, Rooney equally. Possibly it's bad luck, but I won't be the first to tell you that there's been more than one person vocal about Moyes' training methods and the strain he puts on players bodies.
All the goings on in the summer wasn't bad luck either. Fellaini's singing was just a shambles, if Moyes wanted him as badly as he apparently did the club could have sorted it on day one, when he had a clause that would have made the whole deal cheaper. I fully believe a club of our size and magnitude are capable of buying two players at once. Fucking around with Fabregas shouldn't have affected it. And the apparent solution to the problem, to throw money around at every fucking midfielder on the planet, was appalling.
We haven't been unspectacular on the pitch, we've been shit. In fairness to Moyes we hardly played enthralling football last season either, but the primary tactic of passing it to our hopelessly out of form right winger to smash the ball into the shins of the opposition left back or out of play is certainly more prominent. In fact, I can't exactly envisage how we could play worse football than we are doing under Moyes and thats not hyperbolic, it genuinely is the worst football I can ever remember us playing.
Moyes doesn't 'deserve' anything, if he got the sack today he could have no complaints, in fact he would probably deserve it. He probably will not get sacked, he probably will get another transfer window, and he may be able to turn it around. There has been nothing however to suggest that this is a likely chain of events.
I'm not at all convinced he can do it and I wouldn't be at all surprised if he turned out to be our Hodgson.

Question though, who could/would we get to replace Moyes?
