No, not really. Just sounds like he's defending a player coming in for a lot of unfair criticism.

It's clear that he isn't that good a player and doesn't deserve to be playing for England on current forum but this petition nonsense and some of the abuse he has been getting is way over the top.

You're paying over £500k p/w in wages for the pair of them. I'd flog him in the summer and invest in a younger, cheaper striker who isn't a selfish and moody cunt.
Ninja
I wouldn't even bother replacing like for like if he went.
Welbeck has been exemplary as a striker this season and Hernandez is perfectly good enough to be 3rd choice/impact sub, with Will Keane taking the 4th.
Mata can then play in the hole, Januzaj on the right and then buy a winger who isn't totally useless to play on the left, Rues springs to mind.
A competent midfield behind that front 4 and we'd be as good as anyone in terms of personnel.

Which is why I hope we get Jones and Smalling playing games together and building an understanding now.
Oh and we might buy a left back that can defend, that would be nice.

You lot need first choice replacements for both fullback positions and a centre back.
While both have talent, Smalling and Jones as first choice won't cut it on a consistent basis.
United have a lot of work to do in a lot of key areas.
Ninja
Says who?
Jones and Smalling are both very talented centre backs and both deserve a chance in my opinion, if they get it and don't make it so be it, but I'd rather both got it than we spunk money needlessly on big name players for the sake of it.
There's also plenty of United fans that will tell you that Evans is already top class, he's certainly no worse than a lot of players plying their trade at top clubs. We'll probably sign a player, but I wonder if the sensible money would be on a more budget signing like Astori who has a bit more experience than that pair.
I'm not sure what you mean when you say 'first choice replacement', but Rafael is brilliant and I'd hope next season Valera can cover for him. We need to sign a left back, without doubt, but I'm not as sure Evra will leave as I was a few months back so maybe we don't need another player just for the numbers.
We all recognise our midfield is utter dross, and I think people forget that that impacts the defence, too, Fellaini's done a better job of providing some stability in midfield since he's come back and we've looked a bit more solid as a result, finally sort that midfield out and the defence will naturally start to look a bit better.

Both Smalling and Jones have had chances, obviously they've not had a lot of games together as a central pairing but with both being young they lack that experience, which has shown on individual instances when either has played centrally. Someone like Astori isn't going to solve any of your issues at centre half though, while he's a good player, he isn't that top level you will need. He'd also be somewhat foolish to join if he isn't going to be first choice and would cost anywhere between £15-18m at least.
To be fair, every time I've seen Evans play he's been rather streaky with his performances. Though I've not seen much of him this season to see if he's improved or not. Still, wouldn't be banking on him too much either when push comes to shove.
I'm talking genuine first team quality players who are going to walk in and be in the starting line up. Evra on the wrong side of 30 and his performances have lapsed from a few seasons ago, so that's a key position requiring replacing. Throw in a central defender who's going to contain that leadership and composure that's been lost with Rio over the last few seasons and Vidic's impending departure. While Rafael is solid for the most part, a bit of genuine competition will either help raise his game or replace him.
The midfield though is another story altogether.
To sum it up though, United are going to need to spend some serious cash this summer to help bridge the gap that's been created. Particularly when those other sides around them will be spending too.

Jones will be awesome, however Smalling isn't good enough for a top 4 team imo.

Every man and his dog knows that Jones and Smalling have found it very difficult to get consistent game time at centre back over Vidic, Ferdinand or Evans. Either you're being deluded by the fact that they've both racked up a lot of appearances out of position (Smalling at right back, Jones at right back or in the midfield) or you're applying a very Chelsea-esque approach to player development.
What both players have done is do rather well when they get chances at centre back, in fact, they've done better than rather well. Smalling has been excellent, and Jones, whilst looking shaky for 45 minutes against West Brom after coming back from a month out. There was a sense, even before Vidic announced his departure, that next season was the one that the three (including Evans) be given the genuine chance to stake their claim for that position long term.
Jones strikes as absolute prime leadership material, so I'm not sure 'buying a leader' is particularly necessary, he just needs the environment for those skills to grow.
That Evra needs replacing is obvious, but I find the criticism of Rafael bizarre. He's had a disappointing season compared to last but he's also had a very stop start one, too. He's absolutely influential to us, and he's a fantastic footballer; when he plays well its remarkable how involved he is in the game from right back; to describe him as 'solid' is litotical in the extreme. There are very, very, few right backs in the world that could come into the team and outperform him, and I dare say most clubs would have the common sense to demand exorbitant fees for those that would. At 23, I doubt there's any similarly aged right backs that even come close.
On the list of positions we need to address a first choice right back probably comes as low down as goalkeeper.
To ignore the midfield aspect of the debate is dim. A good midfield can do wonders for the back 4 behind them, in an age where Barcelona's midfield is so good that they can get away with consistently playing Mascherano at centre-back it seems odd that a football fan can still miss the importance of this area.
Of course we'll spend cash, we need a midfielder -maybe 2-, a left back, a winger, a centre back of some description, and depending on departures could also need a back up goalkeeper, left back and striker. That that in some way validates your opinions on the problems is neither here nor there, we all know that the biggest reason for the gap is the most unprecedented managerial change of our lifetimes, possibly in football history.
Also Poe, I think thats fair enough. I'm not advocating giving Smalling a chance because I think he's a nailed on world beater, I think he deserves it based on what he's done, but you can never be sure it will turn out well for him.
I just want the younger players to be given a fair crack of the whip at United, because thats what we do, and thats what Moyes was bought here to carry on. We dominated English football on the back of the faith in the likes of Scholes, Beckham, Giggs, Neville and Butt, and we won the first English European cup on the back of the ethos of Matt Busby and his babes.

It really is now or never with Moyes.
I think you'll do it. Their defense is poor and with the attacking options you have they should have some joy.
Sam
Oh, and we beat Olympiakos 3-0 at home that year, just need to do that again!
Got a good feeling about today.
