Fans forum as brilliant as always;

VV suggested New Zealand was a long way to trave

I remember last season when not having a tour of Asia was seen as a lack of ambition.

2008... the glory years according to some.

Not sure I can quite believe the Modric one, Newcastle seemed to chase him for ages.

Keegan sounded remarkably not bitter in this. and found it funny how fans were heckling for Keegan to have a go at Pardew, and then turns to support for Pardew in the end.

Technically, New Zealand is not Asia, and for most, "lucrative Asia tour" is somewhere like Japan, China, Thailand, whatever. I think that was the point of going places like Hong Kong and Malaysia under Bobby Robson. But I doubt many Newcastle fans are actually going to stump up the cash to go on the 24 hour plane out there - it's not exactly cheap to fly to there, nevermind the hotels, food, travel and all that other shit. Be good for one of those "once in a lifetime" things to look around the islands, but stupidly pricey.

Dunno why I love him so much

Never cared for Keegan. Obvs there's some sentimentality there but he quit twice as a manager and tried to quit about three more times (all during Hall's reign).

I only know of two - one shortly after he joined when he moaned "it wasn't what it was like in the brochure" and one at the end of the season we blew the 12 point lead.

CF: "Do the club not think it is worth a cup run next season?"

The board outlined research into Premier League clubs in relation to domestic cup competitions in the last five years, with Swansea City the only club outside the traditional top six to win a domestic cup and not be relegated in the same season (Birmingham and Wigan Athletic were both relegated). Independent research into the cost of relegation over the past ten years showed there is a 50% chance of not gaining promotion back to the top flight and a 30% chance of being relegated to League One or further. In addition, if clubs do return to the Premier League, it takes four years on average.

Sure he offered to quit after 92/93. Dunno if I just imagined it but I'm sure I've seen it mentioned, perhaps on nufc.com at some point.

He just comes across as a very insecure man, which really wasn't his mantra as a player.

And christ that "research" into winning a cup is one of the most appalling things I've ever read.

I agree the 'stats' are embarrasing.

Chroncicle may have outdone them, with their RT for a cup run, Fav for League Safety.

Much as the Twitter thing is dumb, that statistic to justify not even attempting Cup runs is hilariously stupid. I accept the notion the teamsheet that started against Cardiff in the Cup this year should've won but no progression beyond the 4th Round of any domestic cup since Ashley's appointment is ridiculous.

Why have you added the caveat of domestic? QF of the Europa League is still a cup run.

And in truth Newcastle have went for the cup most of the time.

Arsenal knocked Keegan's Newcastle out, due to being better. (R4)
Hull knocked Kinnear's Newcastle out. Due to Newcastle being genuinely horrendous. R3 (Christ that game, possible the worst performance I've ever seen.)
West Brom knocked Newcastle out, never saw the game, lineup looks quite strong.
Stevenage
Brighton I
Brighton II
Cardiff.

I think Brighton II was the only time, Newcastle didn't go for it. And Newcastle did have a genuine injury crisis at the time and were in serious relegation threat at the time. Newcastle were just poor in all of the other cup games.

From what I gather the WBA game wasn't helped by dodgy refereeing.

Its a disappointing stat, however. It is possible to accidentally wind up in a Cup Final - I'm not sure Hull, Sheffield United and Wigan expected to be in the semi-finals this season, for example, but it is still disappointing to see.

The domestic caveat is because its the only one we've entered every season under Ashley, which makes the EL campaign more perplexing. It's also more disappointing they don't seem interested in a reprise of that, and are using it to hide the fact that their deliberate underinvestment left us with a squad too thin to compete in the first half of the campaign.

Meanwhile, the club are considering sueing Richard Keys and BEIN Sports for Tweeting a rumour that Ben Arfa punched Pardew in the face during a post-match bust up, hence why he was not being picked.

We didn't try in the Brighton games, it was horrendous. Same with the Morecambe game we accidentally won last season.

He was constructively dismissed the 2nd time - that's different to resignation.

Somewhat buried amid the "no cups" priority is a line "the club is considering legal action for untrue stories that the club had contacted other people to be first team manager".

When exactly does this media baiting end?

Darren Bent and Saido Berahino have been linked with a transfer to Newcastle.

Bent would be painful. Berahino might have promise, just maybe not £7million worth of it. Yet. Though such is the market force I guess.

Be a bit worried about there being too many Burundians in the squad, could lead to disharmony...

Cabella said something nice about Newcastle.

I have never heard of Ayose Perez. Given the last Spanish striker we signed nobody had ever heard of was Xisco, it's not a pretty omen, although with any luck this won't be a repeat of that fiasco.

Now, I didn't hate Luque and Xisco for being Spanish. I slagged them off for being shit.
