What, where he says we should have paid an extra million for Stan Collymore instead?
Aye, spot on.
Slashman X
Of course, it's always funny to laugh at people who can't predict the fucking future.
Also, at no point did he say Bergkamp was a waste of money
VP.
But its ok to praise someone for getting the past correct? That must have really took some thinking from Pearce.
As for Collymore, just a couple of seasons or so before that article i was watching him at Roots Hall and his Prem experience really was no greater than Platt's. Who i might add had also played in World Cups, Euro Championships and two of the top clubs in Italian football before signing for us, so why Pearce thought that he would struggle in maybe playing more games is beyond me, he was a top level footballer ffs. As for Bergkamp, of course it was a fucking gamble, EVERY SINGLE transfer in football is no matter what the fee. Though this did pay off just a little as Bergkamp is arguably the greatest overseas player this country has ever seen.
That whole article is right up there with the then Tottenham chairman Alan Sugar saying that they got a better deal signing Chris Armstrong for £6m than we did with Bergkamp...

No, it's just spot on that he looked at the player, and said "He was bad in Italy, and it's a gamble that Arsenal have taken on him finding the form he had in Holland". I don't see what's laughable about that
And I'm guessing Pearce was saying Platt was a gamble in that his fitness/ability to play so many games without a break after having a relatively 'relaxing' (as in recovery time was greater) few years in Italy.
I just don't get why it's so funny that at the time, based on what he had seen, Pearce said that those 2 players were a gamble and might not pay off.

That wasn't because we signed Platt and Bergkamp, that was because we had Bruce Rioch as manager. Plus im sure it was 2 seasons iirc.

Giroud and Coquelin throwing their jerseys to the fans after 90 mins \o/

I would love to see Arsenal try out Walcott and Giroud up top in the league, I think they could be a good partnership with Poldi and Chamakh backing them up. Chamakh with a partner is a much, much better player.

Koscielny's only played 3-4 games this season and was excellent last year. He might not have had the best of games recently but you don't become a bad player overnight.

Well he has.

What? He had an indifferent first season having to adapt from Ligue 1 to the Premier League, but was fantastic for most of last season. Stupid to infer that all of that good progress has immediately been wiped after a few poor performances.

Your not far from wrong but was competent and improved in the latter stages particularly against Barcelona in our games with them and then continued last season, probably our most improved player. Hasn't played much this season but had a good game against City and although woeful last night scored an important goal and started a counter attack to set up another. Given time im sure he'll find his form again.

Would mean dropping one of Cazorla, Arteta or Wilshere. Though I definitely want to see Walcott up front for a couple of games in the league.

I think we should start with Giroud in the bigger games and bring Theo on in the latter stages. If we're on the backfoot for a lot of the game then Giroud is good for holding up the ball and bringing others into play whilst Walcott would be largely ineffective. I do think we should start using him predominantly as a striker from now on though.

Bradford away in the next round. It's one of the closest games to Glasgow Arsenal will get this season. I'm very tempted to head down to that.

I've never understood some of the criticism of Walcott. I know he's not the most consistent of players but that's often the case with wingers, and most sides will always have players who are consistent yet unspectacular (e.g. Arteta, Mertesacker) but they'll need to have guys like Walcott who can win you games on their own. We've always known what a fantastic talent he is when it comes to running at players and beating tired defences, but last season he really upped his game in terms of crossing and finishing. He seems much more composed in front of goal this season than he used to be, as displayed by his finishes against West Ham and the first against Reading last night. He's a really important player for us and I'll be devastated if he leaves. If we're willing to give Gervinho a shot up front then I think Theo more than derseves his chance.
Jaeronimo
The thing with Walcott is he in small doses didn't nothing to change the criticism he received in terms of his final product when playing out wide. When Waddle said he didn't have a football brain i thought that was very unfair although in small doses you can see what he meant. Walcott has improved season by season and he should be playing up front more. I can't understand Gervinho playing in the middle when you have Podolski wide and Walcott on the bench, someone who is yearning for that chance and in my opinion would be better suited.
That being said, with Gervinho injured for three weeks it might be a blessing in disguise, i'd like to see Theo given a chance up front for sure. Giroud is brilliant at making runs and is probably the most consistent player we have for getting in the box. Thats one of the things thats diminished from our game. Countless times i've seen Arsenal go forward and the wide players have nobody to play the ball into and have nobody making a run into the box.

Arsenal are another club like the rest, it is not a farce, look where it is at the moment. Sometimes we need perspective. Being a fan of a club that struggle can give you that. And when I say struggle, I don't mean compete with the best teams in Europe and the World and finish as one of the best 4 teams in a nation of 60 million for about 10 seasons in a row...
