Was on my way back up from London so we stopped off to watch the game. Good support for a friendly and sissoko and wijnaldum looked good.

Taylor and Williamson looked below their level too which is worrying. We really need them both away from the starting xi/first backup position come 2 weeks time.

Felt we could have won the game has Sammon not been rugby tackled at the end

Wasn't expecting that amount of Newcastle fans to come up! I think Cisse found out Basham is a Sunderland fan half way through the game or something

Yeah we were poor.

I don't normally take notice of friendlies, tbf.

Our defending has been shambolic throughout though.

Nah, rumours he's off to Palace.

Has been shit for about a year tbf but I don't think many would look good playing next to what is effectively a lamppost with hair.

Weird the absolute obsession most people have over Williamson. Colback, Perez, Janmaat, Cisse & Dummett maybe the only footballers Newcastle had who had better seasons than Williamson last year.

I also love the not boring not 'Premier League quality' moniker. Newcastle conceded about 7 goals all season in the Championship with Kadar, Hall and super Zube.

We must have had a woeful campaign if Williamson was one of our better performers last year. Much as some Newcastle fans probably go a bit far in slagging him off, he spent most of the campaign playing shit. We do need new centre-backs regardless, given that as well as everyone's favourite whipping boy, Coloccini has been poor for most of the time since 2012, and Steven Taylor seems to have limbs made of felt. I highly doubt the Colo to Palace rumours though. Not sure about Lascelles yet though. Maybe need to see if he plays.

With any luck Mbemba will be decent but a CB with Prem experience could be useful. I also think we need a left-back, but who knows. Apparently Charlie Austin is close too.

Meanwhile John Carver has said he wants to manage NUFC again. Dear God haven't we suffered enough: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/newcastle-united/11766550/Ex-Newcastle-head-coach-John-Carver-I-took-a-battering-for-being-honest.html

Williamson isn't a Premier League quality defender. Positioning is awful, too slow and he's terrified of posession. McClaren wants his defenders to be able to play out from the back. He'll just hoof it long all the time.

Taylor is just about a Premier league quality defender.

Who knows what Lascelles and mbemba are like.

Coloccini doesn't want to be here.

Yet were going to waste 15m on another striker when we already have 3 good ones and not improve the defence at all. Baffles me. All this attacking prowess and were still going to be dog shit at the back.

It maybe the case that McClaren is going to be playing Ayoze out wide. Seems a bad idea given he was wasted out there last season when he was used in such a role. We do have a lot of players who prefer middle slots (Cisse, Perez, Riviere, Mitrovic up top, plus Wijnaldum, de Jong, Cabella, Sissoko in the number 10 role), so squeezing them all in looks like a challenge. Much as I'd like Charlie Austin, there's other areas we need to strengthen more urgently.

I'm also slightly alarmed that Gael Bigirimana has been designated back-up to Daryl Janmaat, given Bigi has played there in 3 of the pre-season games so far. Much as I'm not convinced by our left-back options as well, we're tempting fate by only having one senior RB (Steven Taylor may've played there before but hasn't done in years).

Meanwhile, Adam Armstrong is joining Coventry City on loan. I do think he needs some time out at a lower league side so that could be beneficial.

In terms of defensive targets, I did like the look of James Chester, but the word from Sky is that West Brom have agreed an £8million deal. Bit of a rip-off that.

Would rather we seriously chased Veltman from Ajax or tried to hijack the Van Dijk deal. Maybe N'Koulou from Marsielle?

8m for a bang average defender is way too much.

Means we can sell Williamson and move on to maybe buying a winger too.

If we only sign Mbemba in defence I'll be extremely disappointed.

N'Koulou has been linked with us before in this window and would be a decent shout, but the trail on that one seems to have got cold of late.

It'll be a shame but there's still a week and a half to go.

Fingers crossed we don't ruin the good work we've already done.

Could do worse than trying to get Caulker in for 8m.

You really need someone with a bit of experience of England to come in.

Yeah. That't precisely the problem.

Also Williamson 'hoofs it long' - Do people honestly think that it's his fault? That's clealy the fault of the midfield for chronically underperforming. It's the midfields job to take the ball of the defence ffs.

Williamson isn't PL quality? Did you not watch Newcastle in the championship? He was miles better than all of the opposition.

Good to know Veltman and Van Dijk are guaranteed hits, whereas Mbemba isn't? Van Dijk must have really impressed you in Celtic's CL defeats at the hands of Legia and Maribor.

Williamson is top end of the Championship quality. Possibly good enough for a newly promoted team in PL at best.

whoscored.com has Williamson as our 16th highest rated player of the campaign. Granted there's a few odd ones (Cabella, Tiote and Haidara are 3 of the top 5), but its not exactly a great endorsement.

Even when we had a midfield worth passing too, he would be likelier to play it long. But the issue is less that, and more the fact he seems gone like the rest of our defence seems to have. In 2011/12 and the first half of 2013/14, he put in some impressive performances, and I don't really quite know what the fuck has happened aside. We've conceded 190 league goals in three seasons, and as a unit, something has gone extremely wrong. Maybe its easy to blame certain players, but Krul, Colo, Willo, Steven Taylor and Haidara have been around for most of that period, as had the old coaching staff.

Had this been a year ago, I'd have said yes. Two successive relegations doesn't half feel like its tempting fate.

Well why does Collocini not have the same passing success rate as Williamson?

He's top half championship quality yeah, not Premier League though.

Be interested to see how De Jong goes this year. First season was basically a write off with injuries. Hows he been in pre season? Will he start in the number 10 role?

Williamson's passing % isn't exactly bad. It's somewhere in the middle. Even though its a pretty meaningless stat.

The reason Newcastle concede far too many goals, is because the team are far too prone to just stop playing when it gets tough. turning 1-0 defeats into 3 and 4-0 defeats a lot. How many times do Newcastle get players sent off when they're losing for some stupid reason?

Anyway, I don't think I've seen anyone ever sign for Newcastle who has a better write up than Mbemba. Which pretty much guarantees he will be shite.

Taylor and Williamson are defending like 45 year old blokes here.

Mbemba has came on to play right back though.

The next mbiwa?

It needs far more than 30m on 3 players.

We need another 3 minimum for top 8.

I don't see not. We were thereabouts when Pardew left and the season before.

Last season's top 7,8 and 9 look to have gone backwards. If we're not up there next season. Then chances are someone has done badly.

And regarding Williamson - he will probably start as Newcastle's 4th choice CB.

Our 'rivals' 4th choice CB - Muniesa, Gardos, Bartley, Yoshida, Collins, Olsson, Wasileske, Delaney, Senderos, N/A.

The N/A is Everton as they've only got 2 first team CB's as of now.

Be interesting to see if we can develop him into a future first teamer.

Surprised you've not let him stay at Northampton for the season on loan, don't see him getting into you starting 11 anytime soon.

Should see if Coventry fancy taking them both, build up a partnership with each other.

Happy that Coloccini has signed a new deal too, hopefully it'll mean the performances of the last 2 seasons will perk up now there's less uncertainty about his future.

He was outstanding in the season we finished 5th.

Hilarious how fans on twitter seem to be slating Haidara's first touch and insisting Sissoko should only play on the wing.

Maybe Pardew was right?
