So I've decided on who I want to be my primary players, backups, rotation, etc. What's the best way of keeping track of this? The tactics screen doesn't seem to be the best approach since players move in and out of that according to injury, fatigue, etc. Is there a place where I can keep my default team layout for easy reference and it stays stationary until I change it?

You could use the Squad screen for that. Pick your starters and subs (12 max) and search for the Save Team Selection on the right side of the screen, between Quick Pick and Filtered. I always save my favorite first team selection as a template I can easily return to after changing my squad depending on form, fitness, injuries, bans etc.
Hope that helps.

That's exactly the sort of thing I was looking for. There's just so much data at one's fingertips in this game that I probably never would have found that.
