I've also been thinking what is the point of us even qualifying for the champions league every season?

More money....doesn't get spent
Attract world class players...who we don't buy

Our target is to qualify for a competition where we beat a few shit teams in the group stage only to get dicked on by a big european team in the next round, it's such a pointless ambition. Give me an FA Cup over champions league qualification any day. At least until we have a team that has a chance of actually competing for it which at this rate is going to be a long, long time.

When Arsenal fans blame the board, do they blame them for not letting Wenger spend more money or for not sacking him?

Mourinho, though sadly the fact he's a bit of cunt will probably put the board off.

Not really very likely he'd be interested though.

Well that's the issue isn't it, Wenger's Economics brain takes over and he doesn't like buying players when he's not getting value for money. I could be wrong but wasn't it David Dein that used to always convince him to overspend on a quality player when the chance came along?

Yeah that's what I don't get when some Arsenal fans blame the board.

Wenger is the reason they miss out on players as he doesn't spend the money, even if it's there.

This is what I don't understand. If I was given 4th place or an FA Cup win, I would bite your hand off for 4th place. The Champion's League is the main attraction that Arsenal have. Cazorla wouldn't have joined Arsenal if they weren't going to be in the CL. The FA Cup means fuck all to the players and I guess it's 'nice' to have, but the CL is the priority by far. If a team's fan said "We won the FA Cup but finished 7th in the league" to a bunch of fans whose team finished 4th they'd get laughed out the room. Wenger understands this well but something does need to be changed.

The difference between Arsenal and the other big clubs is that the other clubs can finish in the CL spots and win trophies, but they all spend more money than Arsenal. If the club wants both, they need to spend.

It was ridiculous of the club to add that poll though, if true. I never saw it.

Awful article. What are Arsenal fans supposed to do - refuse to support a player because he's not at the standard that we'd expect? Giroud clearly isn't the world class striker we needed to replace van Persie, but he's a damn hard worker who's contributed well to our season so far. As much as I would love Wenger to go out and buy a Lewandowski, Cavani or Jovetic, but as that's incredibly unlikely to happen, I'm going to get behind players we currently have at the club.

I can understand his point, to a very small extent, but statements like "Olivier Giroud is everything that is wrong with Arsenal" is an ignorant, misinformed and sensationalist statement to make. Idiotic.

If you're going to pick one player as symbolic of Arsenal's decline, it's clearly Abou Diaby. Or Squillaci. It's never Giroud though.

Yeah I like Giroud, I don't think we've seen the best of him yet either. He probably won't reach the heights of RVP but I could see him getting 20+ goals a season.

I don't think it's a good article (and he definately hates Giroud for some reason), but I do think it's relatively interesting in criticising some of Arsenal's popular players, rather than Squillaci, Chamakh and Arsharvin, none of whom ever really play.

And Diaby? Is he really that bad? I've seen him properly once this season, against Liverpool, and he was fantastic.

I actually think that's a decent opinion piece.

He lays in to Giroud, (I was expecting to disagree, because I do like him) but he justifies his point well and although his criticism of Cazorla may be OTT I don't think you'd find many outside of Arsenal circles that would herald his ability on the same level as Arsenal fans do.

But regardless, I've not seen a great deal of Arsenal this year and if Arsenal fans say it's a shit article based on nonsense I'm inclined to trust them.

Embarrassing that our only growth is coming from the centrally negotiated TV deals for the premiership.

The commercial team does fuck all yet still pick up massive bonuses for stupid shit like renewing a deal with Emirates. At the time the club spun it as a £150m deal but now its out that it's tiny and the rest depends on trophies and champions league and loads of other clauses (which is understandable from Emirates given how shit we are these days).

Matchday revenue is down because we play less home games (as we are going out earlier in competitions) and are not attractive to corporates anymore because we win fuck all.

Why haven't the board seen that not spending money isn't just hurting in the short term but it's damaging for the club in the long run. Both the fans and the profits of the club.

I've just been reading the Swiss Ramble guy's posts on your figures up till 30/11/12, hopefully we'll see a new piece on his blog soon.

I can't say I pay close attention to your club but it was quite interesting to see that you're only posting profits due to player sales and without them and the little profit from the Highbury properties you'd have posted a £27m loss. Not to mention the 'profit excluding player sales' figure is getting worse and worse year on year.

Oh aye, forgot to open the Cash Reserves image, with 123m stockpiled that theoretical £27m loss doesn't really matter...

In defence of Arsenal, it's worth noting that their main sponsorship deals (stadium, kit and shirt) are all fairly small compared to most sides of their size. They should be getting a fairly large increase in the next few years; the new TV deal should provide a sizeable increase alone.

I think the issue at Arsenal is quite clearly the board and the fact it's been almost a decade without a trophy and Wenger is still there. They seem very content just going along and qualifying for the Champions League year after year.

What do they do when they inevitably don't qualify for the champions league. I can see the same thing happening to them as Liverpool. Only difference being we spent money on shit and they don't spend at all.
