I've seen a lot of 3D kits here on the forum and I thought why don't we have something that can convert those into 2D kits? Well, you can find the answer below. In 2020 I started with the 3D to 2D standard kit conversion template for Photoshop, whereby you copy and paste elements from the kit into smart objects that are warped into the right place. For FM22, I've made more improvements to the standard kit and also added support for 3D to SS kit style conversion!

We also use a script that uses your config.xml and transforms that into an output directory with the kits of your choice! @DokteurHaisse did an amazing job creating a Photoshop JSX script, that automatically generates the 2D minikits from an input file (config.xml) of your 3D kits directory. Together, we made it a bit more user friendly (also for macOS users).

There are two tutorials included in the zip, both for the script as for adding the kit manually to the template.

Running into any issues with the download or do you want to perfect this project? Let me know!

Drop you creations below, I'm curious to see what you all made!

@wfm18, thanks for the offer but I don't have anything that I was really attempting to do convert, I was just trying it out, and I'm just a dabbler when it comes with working with images so can't really justify the expense of upgrading to CC.

This is a really impressive project and has the potential to revolutionise kit-making in the FM community. I look forward to seeing how this progresses and really hope that people do buy into it.

Allright, you know where to find me anyway if you need something 😉

Yes I hope it will shift the focus towards 3D which then could simply convert without much effort into any 2D style. Although I must say that the quality for SS and FC'12 will likely be a bit lower than custom made. It also depends on the quality of the 3D kits if it is possible or not, especially logo placement is a very good example. In some cases logos still end up on the shoulders instead of on the chest. My friend DokteurHaisse created a tool for that to help people out with those issues as well: https://alexmichelet.github.io/3dkits-viewer/

Thanks for your reply @Fidney. The errors that you're getting are indeed because you're using an outdated version of Photoshop. The warping effect is not taking place on the kit in CS6 or below, which normally puts everything into the right place. If you want however, you can send me the 3D files with config.xml in PM and I can convert them for you. If you want to do it yourself, I recommend to upgrade to Photoshop CC, that will 100% work correctly.

There is still a lot of work to do on the SS kit, so that is something I'll focus on after FM22's release 😉

dude actually it would be great if there was a way to convert SS kits to standard kits. 😀

The texture image (and the SI-made standard kits) in the game files is only 256x256px, unfortunately. It would be possible to enlarge it using a program like Topaz AI Gigapixel, but I'm not sure if that would fit with the idea behind the community-made standard kits which was to make them match the SI-made kits as seamlessly as possible.

@Doddo04 I'm creating the kits in 1024x1024 but scaling them down to 256x256. When i use an higher resolution, it's becoming noticeable that the 3D kits are also only in 1024x1024 instead of 4096x4096 (4k textures) for example. In the script I could change the number to 420x420 or 512x512 and rerun the script without any issues, but they might show differently ingame compared to SI's official kits and generated .svg images (default ones are .svg with an .png overlay on top).

In the end, the location where the kits are being shown is perfect for 256x256. Larger wouldn't be necessary, at least for FM22. Depends of course on the skin you use.

Just checked this out, it's just a clone really 😛 The 3D to 2D script won't work, but the warping does take place. After import a new image to the smart object however, the results are the same as with CS6 and lower.

However it's good enough to create 3D kits and I can export those to 2D Standard at any moment 😉 And I bet there are others who want to do that as well.

They look like this

Using this default template

The plan is to get the standard PSD for the script as close to that as possible.  Think the likelihood is that a bit of the collar will need to removed from the PNG

What skin is this? please

Dear all,

Currently trying to make a kit, and I found a problem with it mine. Already saw about some sort of issue with Photoshop and smart object wrapping. I'm running a 2019 version of Photoshop. Could someone perhaps explain to me why this is happening and how can I solve this issue?

Big thanks in advance 🙂

It is not applying warping effects for you. I suggest you to use https://fmkitcreator.com/tools/minikit-generator/ as this is completely outside Photoshop.
