Hello everyone, I'm new to FM 13 (I've been playing Fifa Manager from 05 to 12, the 3D match engine was horrible and I was mainly sticking with it because the interface was more user-friendly than FM13) and only this year I decided to give it a try because now it has many more player pics and better interface thanks to this site. I've been playing for a week and must say I'm happy with the game, it took me a while to adapt to it but now I can manage through it's options more or less.

Now to my problem: I play with a short passes strategy and I tick retain possession, pass to feet, work ball into box and look for overlap, and sometimes the players do obey but most of the time they just place stupid long balls from the defence or the midfield. 95% of them always end up in the rival GK's hand, goal kick or with luck in a rival throw in. I don't know if it's because it's a minor league, because it also happens to the rivals, maybe none of the players in L1 or L2 have the skills to place good long balls? (I manage Wrexham) But anyway why do they do this if I always have the short pass bar to the max? My GK is the worst case, his goal kicks end up in a rival throw in 90% of the time.

I'm managing Wrexham, and in my first year I ended up 5th and won the promotion playoffs to League 2, and the FA Trophy (my squad was the best in the league and in the trophy so I guess it's normal) and I got kicked off from the Carling Cup in the 1st round as expected. I write this because this problem I've had hasn't cost me big time but I should have done better in the league I guess. Now I'm 2nd in L2 with 8 matches played and still alive in the 2 cups, I can't complain but this problem just frustrates me, I could have done better because I play with 2 playmakers, a ball winning, a defensive midfielder and an attacking one and a possession tactic which would have won me more games it they didn't just give the ball away like this 30 times per game.

Does it also happen to you? Is it a tactic or skill problem? Thanks

As in real-life, if players don't have the composure and technical ability to play a short-passing game, that style is very hard to implement successfully. In lower-league football, you don't tend to get players whose skill-sets are suited to this style as they're more likely to be hard-working but technically limited cloggers in the main. Besides, in real-life, as in FM, just because a coach asks his players to play a certain way, it does not automatically mean they will do what he wants how he wants it all the time. They're not robots, after all, and all of them have different attitudes, attributes and outlooks.

You may have a bit more success with your tactical instructions if you decrease your team's creative freedom and if you increasing your tactical training.

As for your GK's poor kicking, it depends how good his kicking attribute is. If it's quite low, it's understandable that his kicks are inaccurate most of the time.

Ok, thank you for your help, so it's a normal thing for this league. I'm very happy with the game anyway and I'm not doing bad in the matches, I'll just keep getting used to it.
