ROGERIO CENI’S BAHIA ON FOOTBALL MANAGER 2024

One of the most prolific goalkeepers in football history, a legend of São Paulo and Brazilian football, Rogério Ceni (50), has been the head coach of Bahia since last year. The team, purchased by the City Investment Group—the same ownership as Manchester City—still needs to resolve its financial difficulties. As a result, it has not been possible to have a transfer market that meets the fans' expectations. However, Rogério Ceni has done an excellent job with the resources at his disposal, employing a style of play based on ball possession and a highly fluid 4-1-2-1-2 formation. This system focuses on exploiting central areas of the pitch, creating goal-scoring opportunities through a patient short-passing game.

Key players include goalkeeper Marcos Felipe and the deep-lying midfielder at the base of the diamond, Caio Alexandre, who serves as the primary passing option both in the build-up from the back and in the opponent’s half. When the team struggles to find space for the forwards, Caio Alexandre drops deep to receive the ball and restart the attack. The diamond’s two wide midfielders also play crucial roles: Jean Lucas, an all-round midfielder with tireless runs forward and defensive cover, and 35-year-old Everton Ribeiro, who partners with Caio Alexandre as the midfield's metronome. The two often interchange positions. Finally, there’s Cauly, the attacking midfielder who operates as a forward (or a false nine). When the two strikers move wide to find space or close down opposition wide players defensively, Cauly takes up the central role to link play and create chances.

Let’s now see how to recreate this tactic in Football Manager 2024.

Mentality: Positive

In Possession

  • Attacking Width: Fairly narrow. As mentioned, Ceni prefers attacking through the center.
  • Play Through the Middle: Focus on central areas of the pitch.
  • Build Out from the Back: Ceni emphasizes building from the back.
  • Full-Back Overlaps (Right and Left): The full-backs provide the only width in Bahia's play.
  • Pass Into Space: Utilize through balls to exploit gaps between opposition lines.
  • Passing: Much shorter.
  • Tempo: Slightly slower.
  • Crosses: Low crosses.
  • Work Ball Into the Box: Encourage careful buildup to create quality chances.
  • Dribbling: Dribble less.

In Transition

  • Pressing: Counter-press aggressively to regain possession quickly.
  • No specific instructions for when possession is won, as Bahia prefers patient buildup but can counterattack when the opportunity arises.  This flexibility is left to the players’ decision-making.
  • Goalkeeper Distribution: Distribute to center-backs and take short kicks.

Out of Possession

  • Defensive Line: High.
  • Line of Engagement: High.
  • Pressing Intensity: More often.
  • Prevent Short GK Distribution: Stop opponents from playing short.
  • Defensive Instructions: Stay higher up and force play outside.
