A few months ago the developers of FM, Sports Interactive, did a talk at Unite 2024, a conference for developers working on the Unity Game Engine that FM is moving to with Football Manager 25. I just watched it back again and one thing really caught my attention.

They say:

One of the big goals that we had is, is driving some of this, and I'll touch on some of that here now. We wanted to do more frequent updates more easily than we were able to with the previous technology that we had. And we wanted to be able to do this with data only changes without having to rebuild the game itself when we actually send updates out to our players who get new content.

Obviously that's a bit rambly coming from a live talk, but it seems to boil down to “We want to do more frequent updates and we want these to be data only changes”

Or rather “We want to do more frequent data updates”.

Could this mean live squads similar to FIFA EA FC? With all the latest transfers appearing in FM instantly and maybe even some sort of live form, or at least injuries and suspensions?

That would be amazing for the game and take a huge burden of, of all the people that contribute to our Data Update.

Although I have a feeling the volunteer researchers they have building the official DB right now might be a little less optimistic about the prospect of having to keep it up to date more frequently (any official researchers want to share their thoughts?)

Or maybe i'm reading too much into this and they're just referencing the negative updates they do such as removing expired licenses like they did a few months ago and wanting to alleviate the internal difficulty they have in pushing these updates out to Steam etc.

What do you think? Could we be getting more frequent official data updates? And how often do you think they might be, daily, weekly, monthly? The fact that they've referred to it as “one of the big goals” has left me hopeful.
