Just got roped into doing a 5k run, I can do stupidly long walks with no trouble at all but even running for as much as two minutes kills me off. In the end I'm not sure what my time was but I think I did ok, I avoided running with the middle aged fattys anyway.

I should of stretched better though as my legs are killing me between the back of my calf and my ankle.

Edit: I got 35:08, considering there were guys doing it In 17 minutes I now feel less proud.

Just reminded of how much I hate running. Would so much rather ride my bike all day than do even a 5k run. So so boring!

Same. Cycling is much more bearable.

I'm the opposite, I hate cycling. I'd much rather run than go on a bike.

Find running a lot harder, hence I hate it

Did another 5km run on Sunday but I'd no iPod this time. It was absolute torture, couldn't even bear the idea of doing anything more than 5km.

Whereas today I went for a 85km cycle, and I didn't get bored once. Despite riding into wind over a hilly pass. With the odd rainfall. Much much more bearable.

Do any of you swim?

I swim, but mainly for survival or when shitfaced on holidays.

Walking 10k to and from work every day. Love it. It's helps to have a whopper playlist, and when the sun is out. Annoying walking through the city though, too many people. We need a new plague

I used to swim competitively when I was younger, pretty sure I even represented my county at one point, or had trials or some shit. You wouldn't think to look at me though, no muscle at all, lean as a bean pole.

That 10k walk must take quite a while?

Dublin is far too big, and you're right, they'd wanna trim down the population a bit.

Living in Galway at the moment. (Studying in NUIG) It's brilliant here, wouldn't even call Galway a city. Just a big town. Would absolutely hate to live in Dublin though.

I have a thirty five mile race in June. Last year I raced over 64 and 90 miles, and didn't do any specific training for either.

This year, after 12 months of sitting in an office and eating shit, I'm struggling even to run 5 miles. June is going to be emotional.

Yeah it's around the Isle of Wight.

Last year was London to Brighton (64 miles) and Winchester to Eastbourne (90). To be honest, I, and most other people, end up walking the uphills as it just isn't worth the energy expenditure over that sort of distance.

5k each way, 10k total. Takes about 40 mins. Issue is I'm going from north Dublin to South so have to go down O'Connell St, through College Green then down Grafton St, people everywhere. Where I'm living is class though

Nope I haven't. Was completely on a road bike and my tyres were flat as shit. On my old bike, getting a new one delivered hopefully this week. I have some aero clip on bars but my handlebars on the current bike are too thick for them to go on. Will hopefully do a few more once I get my new bike though

Might as well use this thread for bike maintenance seeing as most of you ride.

My bikes clicking on the down push on the right hand pedal, does it more at low speeds than high.

Also kinda hard to explain but when i pedal down hard at low speed it sounds like the bike is over-reving if that makes any sense sorta like when too much power gets put down on a car and the wheel spins?

Oh and it is a bitch to shift up the front gear, fights like mad against it.

Any ideas? I've tried tightening everything, oiled everything etc...

Check your cranks if they are damaged or something catching. Could also be chain thats making the noise.

Not sure what you mean for over reving. For gears could just be set wrong, the limits etc. Theres a few videos on how to set your gears, theyre simple to follow. If that dont work could be worn gear cables or something in the shifter. Worst case scenario take it to a shop but i hate how they charge like 20 quid for a 5 min job

Might be as simple as your chain crossing over, try to avoid being in the big ring on the front and the largest sprocket on the back wheel and vice verse. Basically try keep the chain as straight as possible.

Don't think it's the chain cross over it's largely very flat round where I'm at uni so I spend most of my time in the highest gear.

The cranks potentially could be the problem, might just take it to the bike shop on campus and get them to do a general bit of mani menace.

I'm finished college exams on the 7/5, and then I'm going to the Giro in Belfast (I'm volunteering) on the 9/5 to the 12/5.

After that, I'm planning on cycling home from Galway to where I live in Kerry. Approx 260km. May add a bit onto that though with the route I want to do. Want to cycle down by the coast rather than head down through the centre. May leave on the 14/5.

Day 1 would take me from Galway > Lisdoonvarna > Limerick. 140km. I'll stay with my brother then. (I have an alternative route for this which would take me further down the Clare coast but its 213km when I arrive to Limerick)

Day 2 would take me from Limerick > via the coast to Ballybunion > Tralee > home. Around 180km.

If I properly organize myself I can do it. I'm in good shape already, so if I took it easy its certainly doable. Plus the scenery along the coast should numb the pain a bit as well. Only downside is that one of the longest climbs in Ireland (The Connor Pass, 6-7km in length) is only about 30km from where I live so I'll probably seize up if I even make it to the top
