Target Man

i am wondering a bit about playing a TM, does anyone know if you must tick the "target man" box in team tactics and/or tick "target man supply" for the TM to be effective i've never really used a TM before but i got llorente to valencia and want to have him TM with Soldado up front but not sure how to set a target man effectively
