Some of our fans said they'd be hoping for a Sunderland today.

Don't think they imagined Sunderland to put us deeper in the brown stuff by getting mauled, mind

I don't remember anything about any of our players' positions at the end of the Sunderland and Liverpool games but that's mainly because by that point nobody really cared as the manner of the defeats was already confirmed. Although I think Sissoko was parked in left wing at the end of the Sunderland game.

Benitez to NUFC is a rumour started on Twitter, but one of the more fantasy ones anyway. If we did sack Pardew we'd probably wind up with JFK again anyway.

Benitez is after 'troffees'' though, isn't he?

True and of course we're known for accumulating trophies such as pre-season kick about tournaments in Portugal (or South Africa if the rumours we're going there in pre-season happen) and the Championship.

There's no a rumour going round some of our players walked out of training, although if it's true they were only there for an hour that does seem a bit much.

Hmm. Really don't see how it was as attacking as we played last season, maybe the formation we played was similar but that's about it. Cabaye might have been played in a similar position but without the likes of Ben Arfa and Ba stretching teams Cabaye has much less space and without those two to feed off he's relied on way too much to provide all our creativity going forward. Gutierrez and Sissoko on the wings are not more attacking players than the other too, surely that's obvious.

Gutierrez when played in the midfield three was nowhere near as conservative as Tiote and Perch either. Even when playing there he still played his natural game breaking forward from midfield and popping up on the left wing, to suggest that he was a sitter just like the other two definitely isn't true. I agree we're unbalanced at the moment but that doesn't mean we should start playing players out of position and playing negative tactics, Marveaux and Gouffran are limited but at least they give us other options going forward, one of them at least should be in the team when we can't pick Ben Arfa.

I think the fans aren't helping, but their only really reflecting what's happening on the pitch. The players have constantly looked nervous playing at home and it's a bit too simple just to blame that on the fans.

Probably something like;

Cisse

Jonas Cabaye Gouffran

Perch Sissoko

Never going to happen though, don't think Sissoko has ever been tried deeper in midfield yet.

I think Sissoko was played deeper in his first game at Villa but has been played more forward in all games since. It worked a treat against Chelsea but with the exception of the home game against Southampton I don't remember it being anywhere near as successful.

There's long running problems all season for every single aspect of what's been on the pitch. For vast swathes of the campaign our midfield and attack has lacked fluency. But more worrying is the other end, given we have the leakiest defence of any Premier League team - and indeed the leakiest Newcastle defence in all our previous Premier League seasons. Why play all the defensive players to protect the back 4 when they're clearly not doing that?

Given next match involves the roughhousing aerial threats of Carroll and Nolan and they have a very impressive supplier in Jarvis, it could be a long afternoon. Our best chance of 3 points is QPR away, and even then it's questionable. There needs to be a huge change of mentality between now and the end of the season, both from manager and players, or else it's curtains.

Talking of next season, there's rumours Rafa Benitez will be our manager next season if we stay up. Would that work?

It's easy to say "it wasn't that negative" but Tiote for Gouffran is more defensive, and the fact Tiote is playing is still a bad move as he is having a terrible season. Tiote in front of Cabaye and Perch as one of our main attacking threats does not compute.

For next week, keep Tiote and Jonas out of the starting 11. An ideal option is having a go at last season's blueprint with Perch as the DM, Anita or Sissoko as box-to-box and Cabs as playmaker, while Gouffran and Marveaux/HBA (depending on fitness) flank Papiss. But if not that, modify the players to fit into the 4-2-3-1. This would have Perch-Sissoko as the back players, with Gouffran-Cabaye-Marvs behind Cisse.

But it seems Pardew seems to be going "my way or the high way". I stumbled across an article from 2006/07 shortly after West Ham fired Pardew where Tevez told a newspaper he didn't know how to play his team's foreign players or what system was the best one. Hardly an assuring precedent.

It seems terrible down there, and I understand at the time it is. But once you're down in League One, and pending on you having some decent management, you strip away the fat and rebuild correctly. The three years we were down in League One were honestly the most exciting time I've known since we were relegated. The crowd was with the team, the players we had were fighting for us. There's nothing worse than what we have now: just shit.

True but Leeds, Southampton, Norwich, etc didn't go straight through the floor to League One. Their decline was more manageable, and all the Premier League high earners had gone, so they had space to rebuild. Wolves have plummeted directly and financially speaking, they're in trouble. Not least given their fanbase seems out for blood.

What the fuck was Sagna doing?
By Shola | Permalink | On 28 April 2013 - 15:38 PM
Well Pardew did put on two wingers at half time and Newcastle conceded four. And Newcastle had more possession than Liverpool. My point is the crowd are against the double pivot as a matter of principle. I can see why Pardew did it, to try and free Yohan Cabaye.

It says Liverpool had 54%-46% possession in their favour.

Enjoyable or not, a double pivot could've been done it if it was deployed correctly. The problem is that it wasn't as Pardew seems to think Cabaye can be played deeper than Perch, Sissoko and Tiote. All three of them could arguably be deployed behind Yohan and instead Cabaye was the deepest of the 4 like he was against Sunderland.

Given Pardew also seems to think Sissoko can play on the wing - fuck knows how that would've worked - it could've been easy to tell one of Perch or Tiote to play the defensive game they're better at, but neither did. If you're going to play a system like that, at least use it properly.

Reading and QPR are gone after a 0-0 draw.

They were both completely terrible. Reading might be back up in the promotion chase next year but it's a very long way back for QPR.

I went to see Iron Man 3 on Friday. Quite entertaining - felt like it had a better handle on the serious superhero schtick of The Dark Knight Rises while not losing the essence of the character. Plus some quite entertaining villains too.

Because the fans start negative and it seeps to the players.

-The average Newcastle game starts with no atmosphere.
-Then on about 4 minutes the crowd will get ratty about something. Normally a misplaced pass or something minor. - It becomes a crisis.
-This will normally build up until they score their first goal. General uproar.
-Why isn't Pardew changing it? is asked. Who is actually on the bench is totally irrelevant.
-Crowd will start chanting for Hatem Ben Arfa, regardless of how unfit and overweight he is.
-Get stuck in etc;
-Half time. Crowd get behind team, performance picks up but no goal, crowd revert.
-Pardew changes it - often the only fit offensive first team player is Ameobi. Crowd criticise decision.
-75 mins - large gaps in the crowd begin to appear.

Today the negativity started before kick off when it was announced Newcastle would play two holding midfielders. At home. The shock, the horror. Heresy. In a week when Bayern and Dortmund both played the double pivot and both won with big margins.

Actually attempting to keep possession is hated, with players shouted at for not getting the ball forward as quickly as possible. Any pass backwards is also hated.

In truth, the performance today wasn't that bad, we've played much worse than that this season. Fulham, West Ham, Swansea, Southampton and QPR performances were worse, and Newcastle actually played some nice stuff from about the 30 minute mark and Liverpool's third. Liverpool were excellent though. Best team at SJP all season.

I've never warmed to Pardew, but at least give the bloke a chance, we were fifth last year.

There's giving someone a chance and there's taking the piss. Yes he got 5th last year and a Europa League Quarter Final this year, but Pardew's win ratio of 37% is lower than Hughton, Roeder, Allardyce and (bizarrely) Souness. I would've accepted a midtable campaign this year but this is too far backwards.

After the defeat by Reading I felt he should've gone. He had been returning up in my estimations of late but this double decimation is too far. He's favourite to be next sacking for a reason.

Tactically, fans can moan and fans do moan. Everyone does. Playing the double pivot is fine - that's more or less what we did last season when we went on that run this time last year. The problem is playing Cabaye behind both of them, and Sissoko as a winger when he looks an unnatural fit in that position. How does that work?

Plus is playing defensive really that good an idea? We have now conceded the most goals of anyone in the league, and have all of 5 league clean sheets this season. So what makes us think playing defensive will actually work?

The Championship has been a crazy division this year. Hell, back in January I figured Leicester and Middlesbrough would be fighting it out for the title and both are now essentially out of the play-off chase. At the other end, Wolves are in big trouble - they could well do a Coventry and go under if they go down, but it's looking more if than when. I think Barnsley might stay up at Peterborough's expense.

The end to that Brentford-Doncaster game was fucking absurd. I didn't think there'd be a more preposterous end to a football campaign that last season's Premier League, but that was a purely sensational moment of football.

I got to watch it all again on MOTD, only this time in a better resolution.

The tactics are baffling - no defensive organisation and playing Cabaye as a holding midfielder behind two DMs who got nowhere near Coutinho or Gerrard all afternoon. The players were shocking but the manager moreso.

Why blame the fans when those in front of them do nothing to positively enliven them?

Newcastle have some amount of work to pick themselves after this. Such a damaging defeat. They're too good a team to go down though.

I am so sick of that phrase - the more I hear it the more likelihood we will go down.

Pardew's line up is fucking baffling.

The wise option was simply leave it or bring in Ben Arfa - he's bought in Tiote for Gouffran, with Sissoko in a wide role he look completely useless in. Stupid tactic.

Stockport staying classy. Wonder if they'll do that on their away trips to Gloucester, Solihull and Workington next season. BSN bound

Congratulations Mansfield to their much deserved promotion back to the FL.

It is so weird to see Stockport being in League One a few years ago and then relegated to the BSN with more fight in the fans than players.

That was a weird game - at the start of kick-off I'd have taken a point. At half-time I felt we should have been 4-0 up, but then after 80-85 it looked like defeat was inevitable.

In the end a point was probably fair enough. The table is also a strange beast as by and large the results didn't go our way, hence 16th place, but the key result we needed to go our way at Upton Park did.

If Baines is overlooked for Team of the Year it's a real farce.

As for Player, Bale's almost certainly gonna win Young Player but Player of the Year I think will be either RVP or Suarez. Some of those nominations are extremely baffling - Wilshere's been injured/below par, Welbeck is useless and as good as Carrick is, there's better players out there.
