Although I'm not sure what I'd prefer getting rid of Sissoko, Janmaat, Wijnaldum & Shelvey immediately. Or retaining them and stuttering to 15th in the Championship - while they talk about how much they would like to play Champions League football.

On the bright side. I'm glad it's out of the way early. Much rather go down now than on the last day. And at least we've done our best to take Sunderland with us I guess.

Anyway Benitez has taken one point from three games against Leicester, Norwich and Sunderland? He's been a disaster. An expensive disaster, like everything else Newcastle have done since getting rid of Pardew.

Real Madrid manager to relegation inside a year, poor Rafa.

Would like to see him sacked.

I'd take John Carver now if offered.

Rafa very McClaren so far. - A step forward then five steps back when it matters - the midfield offering absolutely nothing.

Darl Karlow comfortably our best player - the referee theirs.

Transfers;

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/ArFxYzEJWwTREV3ibUiO8WekbXkvFykbpAYr4p2D.png

In the summer my first two signing were on free's Andy Williams as he's versatile and can play on the wings and full back - Billy McKinlay as he's absolutely miles better than anyone else.

After a few months I realised I needed more - Paul Dalglish was my big statement - brought in after I realised there wasn't enough goals in this side.

Andrew Cameron is just a young winger - as I basically had no wingers.

David Morley and Ryan Green were brought in as I'd initially assumed my defence was good - but it turned out to be dreadful. Ryan Green isn't on the screenshot as loans are on a different screen to permanent transfers - how quaint.

And finally Terry Cooke apparently one of the class of '92 who Man City once paid a £1m for. One of my stranger signings as he is a AMR and I'd settled into a 3-5-2 at this point so he was used as cover for RWB and AMC - he was OK in either - but a lot of money for a Division 3 sub.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/zTAbNNUpnDDSMU0p5rnGKy5wTQhDhM4HMSIWGEut.png

And leaving the club are;

Paul Stephenson - A young hopeless striker who has since retired - no idea why Bury gave me £60k for him

Tony Williams - My first choice GK - £425k was a lot of money for a guy where I actually had decent back up for - thought it would be worth trading him in to fund the purchases of outfield players.

Mark Robinson - young hopeless full back - who's contract was up at the end of the season.

Thomas Tennebo - A midfield who's deals was also up at the end of the season - sold out of spite - would have been more useful to have him than the £3k but still I'm a spiteful Championship Manager.

Browsing the internet at work the other week; I stumbled across Iain McInthosh's CM01/02 articles on TheSetPieces, and immediately felt nostalgic for the Showcase of Immortals; Championship Manager.

Cherno Samba, To Madeira, Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour and all the rest. As well as breezing through the seasons in 2 or 3 sessions.

I decided to start at Hartlepool. My logic is I want the game to be fresh - so why not start at the bottom rung and see where it takes me? Hartlepool were selected as they are the only North-East team* Completely forgetting Darlington. Yes Darlington were once a football club that existed. 15 years is truly a long time in sport.

Schmeichel, Simpson, Huth, Morgan, Fuchs, Drinkwater, Ulloa, Vardy, Albrighton don't really seem like the work of a omnipotent scout.

Villa's problem seems that they let Martin O'Neill spend £100m or so and give out massive contracts to 'seasoned pro's' and then didn't achieve Champions League status. - Remember Luke Young, Marlon Harewood, Habib Beye, Steve Sidwell or Carlos Cuellar in an Aston Villa shirt?

They then gave the job to Houllier and McLeish, who lost their better players and still had a massive wage budget sucking most of the money out of the club.

Lambert then came in with the express orders to keep them up while reducing their wage budget. He brought in 8 first squad players that year for around £20m. Benteke and Vlaar about the only ones with a reasonable chance of being a success.A further £25m on cheap gambles in the following two years

Basically they spent all their money, and have been bringing in cheap players and hoping.

Good for Sunderland for doing the right thing. Sunderland won't tolerate anyone who won't pay agent fees. Sunderland are a honourable club.

I've tried to do my England 23 but still struggling.

I think the way England have to play is a 4-4-2 diamond. - And I feel Alli has to play behind Vardy and Kane centrally. An absolute mix of goal threat and work rate. I'd have to take Sturridge and Welbeck as the back ups as I think they're both good. And better than Rooney.

Joe Hart in nets. With Smalling and Cahill at centre back - as Jagielka looks past it and Stones wasn't very good to begin with.

Walker, Rose and Dier and then try and play the way Spurs do - it works for Spurs.

But I'm struggling who plays in between Alli and Dier. - Henderson I think, for he's big and runs around a lot - but then who next to him - I have been impressed by Barkley but I don't think he has the discipline, A Henderson-Milner axis is too average, dropping Alli back and putting in Sterling at #10 looks sensible but I fear it would harm Alli - and Alli-Kane-Vardy is the crux of this team right now.

People always forget Cleverley and Vlaar - Villa were 17th last year and Sherwood was always likely to be a shot in the arm sort of manager.

I also find it unlikely 'Tactics' Tim Sherwood was a massive fan of Jordan Amavi and Jodan Veretout and demanded they were brought in.

I reckon it's a great crop of forwards right now - Rooney, Welbeck, Sturridge, Sterling, Kane, Vardy and Carroll* is a pretty tasty strikeforce.

*Carroll obviously doesn't deserve to be there but would be a fantastic option.

Allardyce was poor - completely sat back and offered nothing - when I would have fancied them for a second. A point is fair enough result though.

Good to see Mitrovic score a proper strikers goal.

Has Jonjo Shelvey ever completed a forward pass since joining Newcastle? All i see him do last night was pass the ball backwards all first half and then he spent almost the entirety of the second collecting the ball from 3 yards away from a center back (something i've never understood and drives me mad) and then trying to hit 50/60y passes which would either go out of play or simply land on a Leicester players head.

That's Shelvey on a good day.

Preparing for the Championship with some Championship standard refereeing.

On the whole much, much improved performance. Leicester didn't create much - and I don't think they had a shot on target aside from an offside goal. Newcastle probably should have had a penalty as well.

Whoosh

Anyway Benitez making them come in on their day off is a great start. I'm delighted - Benitez seems to have an aura about him, and I don't dislike McClaren but unfortunately it just wasn't working.

And it got much worse. McClaren's team had no identity. They were neither conservative or adventurous, structured or carefree, aggressive or attractive. They just played, and usually got beat - Think that sums up Steve McClaren's spell at Newcastle perfectly.

The team was just nothing.

To be fair, they might be.

If Benitez keeps them up theres no doubt in my mind that he'll be a success there, but the keeping them up is a the big if. As far as I'm aware Benitez has never managed a club in this position before, nor players as average as some at Newcastle. I don't think its a hugely controversial thing to say that someone like Pearson might have been the better appointment short term.

Have a glace at Benitez' wikipedia page.

Pearson would have been a great appointment - they way it took 8 months to put Leicester into a workable formation was art.

Reminder Benitez spent a summer trying to sell Alonso and get in Gareth Barry.

Anyway Newcastle have sacked 3 coaches and brought in 3 Spanish coaches. Contrasting with when they wouldn't let Hughton and Pardew get in an assistant.

That said Newcastle fans are complaining about appointing a manager they want, who is seen as a massive upgrade.

God Charnley is ballsing this up. I know its sort of hard to get in a replacement without sacking the manager first - but you've already made McClaren's position untenable.

Is there ever been anything that looked like more of a disaster than Benitez and Newcastle?

Benitez is always the 'fans' choice despite being everything Newcastle fans hate in a manager.
