Few tips. For this tactic its very important to have good wing backs (pace, acceleration, crossing, positioning, work rate) - sometimes they unlock defence with crosses when opposition defends with 10 players.
Wingers tend to cut inside, and score most of the goals, so important attributes are finishing, dribbling, pace.
Two center backs should have pace at least 13 (most of the goals conceded are from counter attacks, and fast players). Ideally every player should have high teamwork and work rate.
There were few games where i dominated (30 shots on goals, 5+ ccc, 10+ hc) but couldn't score. In this case, I think it's not a faulty tactic but bad strikers
When you can't get shoots on goal or CCCs, try issuing PLAY WIDER (to stretch defensive line), HIT EARLY CROSSES and SHOOT ON SIGHT (IF you have players with good long shots).
I had problems facing 4-4-1-1 or tactics using roles like shadow striker. To counter this problem you could move one of CMs to DM (half back), and AMC to CM (adv. playmaker). I personally use 3-5-2 formation when facing 4-4-1-1
General training is balanced/high, and match training teamwork.
As PEACE OR PIECES said, squad harmony is very very important.
