I can't think what I've downloaded to cause this though - I have the hair regen stuff in and working, some kits and I attempted to install the latest Pr0 stuff. I started my current save with that pack installed, so maybe it is this. Problem is of course unless I restart I wont notice the benefits of deleting those files will I, so I appear to be stuck with a corrupted continental league system. Having said that, the EL and CL are definitely still in the game, as I can search for them, and it looks like English teams are winning places for it still but I'm not totally convinced it is working properly.

So what do you look for? I always thought it was important to have a high determination and work ethic, and not to be injury prone to prevent that all important development at the early stage. How old does a player have to become before they stop improving? I have 19 year olds whom allegedly have reached the end of their ability tree - yet according to the editor they still have plenty of room to improve. So what gives? This is with 20/20 scouts by the way.
Do you loan them out if you are a top club or do you keep them in the reserves if you have top training facilities? What do you do?

I adore the game, and the idea. It's great. But there are some important niggling issues that I think need attention.
One of my biggest bug bears with the game is how the board handles your expectations. This is pretty fundamental. As soon as you start to make any progress in the game the expectations of the board become unrealistic, and all this happens too quickly. I've seen this time and time again, no matter whom I manage, and where I end up and it sort of ruins the experience. I can see how it works, but it is handled wrong in my opinion.
For example, I am currently playing as Brighton, in 2019. I started out with little experience, and got a job with Ayr in the Scottish League in 2014. I was poached by Brighton after 2 successful seasons and thought I'd take it on. I have since risen through the English leagues and am at a point now where I am rather fortunately competing for the top spot in the Barclays Premier League. I have lots going for my club. I am rich, and have a wealth of backroom staff from all over the world. I also have some incredible first team players and some excellent youth. I pride myself in bringing in young players to nurture into first team members. In my opinion by the end of the season I am comfortable 5th place, or maybe as high as 3rd if I get lucky. But I am no winner, not yet. I am working towards that end of course. Now this is where the board set highly unrealistic targets.
Just because I have played a fairly consistent game, and have a number of high quality players, they expect me to win the league. No top 5 finish, top 3, or competing for the win. Just the win. Even though I've not been anywhere near a win in the past.They also expect me to reach the final of the Champions League, and win almost everything else. Please. Apart from this being unrealistic it has consequences further into the season. My highest finish in the league has been 3rd, but I was a good 15 points off the eventual winner and I have won the Capital One twice. But I got knocked out the CL in the first playoff this season. Yet I was expected to reach the final. The media say that I am 'struggling' in the league yet I am comfortably in second place, just 1 point behind the leaders. How is that struggling? As a result of this, some of my players are now showing signs of becoming unsettled. For instance, a 20 year old winger whom I bought in as a 17 year old and trained him up before moving into his first season is asking for more first team matches. Yet his is only a rotation option and has already played a large proportion of the games. It is only October for heavens sake. This is all related to the board expectation throughout the season. This leads on to bad morale of course. As soon as I draw a game - not lose, draw, it kills my morale. After a single draw, my players are less happy. I mean, go figure. Just because they haven't won every game by 20 goals. It's pretty bonkers really don't you think?
So how could it be improved?

A few points I would make, I pretty much concentrate on my back-room team from the off. It is vitally important and often overlooked. Good coaches usually equates better quality training, but only if your facilities are up to scratch. Remember that coaches also improve your scouting knowledge, so try and find a coach with good stats who also has plenty of foreign experience. The best scouting knowledge I have ever had is 89% worldwide coverage. But that was in the Premier League with 26 scouts and numerous coaches and staff. This allowed me to find numerous top quality youth players and the odd worldclass wonderkid. One striker who was 17 when he joined me for £120k had a 194 ability out of 200! He was insane, with high determination and vision. He will turn into something amazing providing I keep training him. But in the lower leagues it is important to find quality that can be used immediately in the first team. Free transfers are obviously the best bet, but the Financial Fair Play is a killer. I've often fallen foul. Just remember though, a scout/coaches knowledge can decrease as well as increase. Generally if they have low determination and adaptability they may lose their scouting knowledge quickly. This can turn a good scout/coach into a dud.
Another little thing I've discovered, when training your youth, if they are at your cub, get them doing PPM early. Each movement adds value to the player.
I like to invest in a lot of youth players, mostly 15-18 year olds and keep them in my under 21's. I am currently playing as Boreham Wood, and have got them into League 1, but prior to this I managed to sell a youth English player i got on a free for £700k up front and a 50% of his next transfer. I managed to make £1.5 million on the 17 year old in the end which sorted out all of my debt problems in one hit. This is the way to make money in the lower leagues and probably the only way to make significant amounts to be honest. I've got another 5 similar players who may or may not turn into equally good financial opportunities for me in the future.

So my question is, how do you set your database up? Is there a right way or a better way?
Due to the size of my advanced database I only run with two leagues, England and Scotland. But I have 101,000 players selected. This appears to be the best solution for me as I get a nice selection of players with a reasonable playing speed on my laptop. But if I add further leagues, it runs to a crawl. The bottom line is, I want the best playing experience, and I don't want to miss out on those cracking regens.

I didn't realise this was the case. This game is huge with so many players. Okay, I understand what you guys are saying. But, how do I tell if a player is a regen or a real player then? I had no idea about Otis.

Okay, what I am basically seeing from time to time (not all the time) is this. A lot of regens appear as blank portraits like below. Obviously this isn't very aesthetically pleasing. Furthermore when I see a 'blank' like that I tend to ignore - rightly or wrongly I like to see who I am 'developing'. I just can't work with those blank faceless characters. Which is a shame as some turn into inspirational players.
Now, what I would like to see, is this.
A regenerated player (I presume?) which looks a lot nicer.
I understand what you are saying about regens and real life players. I use the sortitoutsi mega face pack so I have thousands of real life faces too, which is fine, but quite a few of the other players in the game appear as faceless portraits. Is this a normal feature, or is it a bug?

Thanks for the reply. I am using the standard skin, but I am using a few mods with it - shiny logos, and this mega face pack. I don't have a default face - in fact I have no players folder at all. Any ideas? I would really like to get rid of the black faceless portraits if possible.

I have 18 scouts, some with 20/20, I have 55% worldwide coverage. I am using the largest custom database with 99,000 players possible. So in theory, I have every opportunity to find the best players. I manually check the regen dates for new youth. But the problem is I think, players are just either not appearing in my scouting range, OR there are very few. For example, I am in 6th place in my second season in the PL. I am a good team but not exceptional by any means. There should be a lot of 5 star youth available should there not? What I am seeing, out of 64,000 players when I search unrealistic transfers, is five 5 star players. Just 5! All of these are currently out of my ability to buy. There are lots of 4.5 star mind you. So what's going on here?
I manually trawl through a lot of the regens, and my scouts are assigned via the head scout, so there isn't much more I can do. All I know is that in FM13 I had literally dozens of 5 star players to choose from at this stage. In this release, so far, there are barely a few. There are a lot of 4/4.5 star, but nothing much with world class potential. I have noticed my scouts are finding generally much older players. Again, this is different for me. So I am wondering if it's something I am doing wrong, or something more fundamental? Have SI changed the star rating system at all? 'World Class' players is a new feature now, beforehand it was just Excellent potential.
