Saw Life of Pi at an advanced screening last night. The visuals and direction was really stunning but I found the ending pretty frustrating and troubling. Really impressive film making though, enjoyed the ride.

Just because it's better than Transformers 3 doesn't make it not shit. It has too many problems to be a good film, and the highs aren't nearly high enough. The only reason why we do this "woah woah woah, calm down, it's not BAD" is because it was made by Christopher Nolan.
I think it genuinely is a bad film. Bad writing, bad pacing, awful meaningless characters. Nothing has any real depth, any real meaning. Nothing feels really intense (apart from a few moments with Bane, a character they also completely ruin in the end).
It felt like all Nolan really cared about was the scale of the film, and he didn't give two shits about any of the characters.

Hmm, I think you make a good point about the scale of the film trumping the characters, but I disagree that the depth/meaning is absent. I guess it boils down to whether the film hit you or not, and for me it did. Bane was a fascinating character and I loved nearly every moment with him on screen, and Catwoman & Blake made good additions even if they were kinda rushed in, but that's a problem with introducing new people into the last film of a trilogy. Also I thought the final wrap-up montage thing was handled perfectly and wrapped everything up nicely, and importantly had the emotional weight it was gunning for so ultimately the pay-off made what came before worth it. I don't think I was every dis-interested at any point in the film and some of the highs were some of the best of the trilogy in my opinion.

I think all your criticisms are fair, but they just didn't bother me as much as they have for others, but maybe that's just because I'm a Batman/Nolan fanboy or something. That's not to say there are things I didn't like about it, I think your point about pacing is spot-on. The sense of time and place is really lost and I thought Gotham as a city was poor compared to the other two films.

I've discussed this with my friends a few times now and it always just ends with 'well that did/didn't work for me' and I think that's what I'm trying to say here

I need to watch it again.

Mainly that The Dark Knight Rises isn't a good film.

Awful pacing, sloppy, confusing (and straight up bad, at times) writing. Plotholes up the wazoo.
Apart from a few scenes, it's just not a very good film.

It certainly has its problems but its infinitely better than the majority of crappy blockbusters that are released every year. Calling it 'not a good film' is incredibly harsh and narrow-minded in my opinion. It definitely has a bunch of problems with it that still bother me but there's still tonnes to enjoy. The other two films have also got weird plot holes and stupid writing too but they never seem to be held up in the same way weirdly. I just think its an easy target for people to get pissed off with.

Think about it: Some foreign team 1-0 up against some English team with 10 team, last minutes of the game and their manager grabs onto the ball. Doubt the commentators would have been so quick to say he was 'entitled' to hold on to it and 'fair play to him'

Well it was our throw-in.

Saw Rise of the Guardians last night. Was really warm-hearted and child friendly but the animation was pretty awesome and I laughed quite a bit. Was about as good as I had hoped.

I'm serious, he's easily been our second best player after Suarez. He just seems to have a bad reputation.

And you know what, I was lying, because he's been on the left for most of the season.

FYI, Glen Johnson is the best right-back in the league right now.

He's been awesome all season.

All three of those strikers are specifically irked at being played out wide for their clubs, and want to play through the middle. Presumably Borini/Suarez will be shoved wide upon their arrival?

Borini is already being played out wide, but I have reservations about playing Suarez out there. Although saying that he played in that position for Ajax and for Uruguay currently so he's able to do it.

Regardless of whether or not your defence is good or not you need to strengthen there and in centre midfield far, far more than you need a new striker. That'd be papering over the cracks of your team yet again.

Anyway Liverpool are being linked with Walcott, Sturridge and Ba this week. Walcott under £10m would be brilliant business imo, as too would Ba. Sturridge I think is a good player and has everything to be an effective player for us, especially in Rodgers current system, but his attitude needs a major sort out and if he wants big wages then there must be cheaper options to look at. Hopefully the scouting team will have looked a little bit further than the rest of the Premiership for players too.

City have been 'on the top of their game' far more than United in recent times, and I think generally they play better football more regularly.

I don't think United have been very good for years in terms of playing well and being dominant, but they continue to win football matches. City have been doing both.

If City turn up they'll beat you fairly comfortably imo.

Had a fairly productive day of film viewing today, watched Headhunters, Lawless and The Bourne Legacy so far, might end up watching yet another film before I go to bed.

Headhunters is pretty great, right? Way more violent than I thought it'd be

They're not, though they both appeared at festivals that year, so IMDb lists them as 2011.

1) The Master
2) Jeff Who Lives At Home
3) Skyfall
4) Moonrise Kingdom
5) Looper
6) Magic Mike
7) Killer Joe
8) 21 Jump Street
9) Killing Them Softly
10) The Grey

How's Jeff Who Lives At Home? Been meaning to catch up with it but haven't got round to it yet. Completely forgot about The Grey, need to give that a rewatch at some point.

Yeah fuck that game, we didn't deserve to lose at all. Missed a hatful of chances and had two huge penalty shouts turned down.

At least Bale got booked for his dive, I just wish more of the Spurs players did too.

Yeah, when I said romance I should have put bromance. Think they very much were obsessed with each other but for different reasons, but ultimately they were bad for each other. Like you say, Dodd was looking for a project and perhaps somebody to experiment with (I think at some point he even calls Freddie his guinea pig, and thinking about it he treats him like a dog for most of the film), whilst Freddie was looking for somebody to give him the easy answers and some direction, or maybe he just wanted some pussy and rocket fuel, or the father figure he didn't have. I think maybe Dodd wanted him around because he was different and actually challenged him.

Urgh, I could happily watch it again tomorrow. I'm going to make it my job this weekend to sit down and watch Magnolia.

Weird game, 2 defensive brain farts and we're two down but probably the better side and playing the better football. Should have had a clear penalty given too.

The free-kick for the 2nd was so fucking soft too. Henderson barely touched Dempsey and he went down like a racist Uruguayan.
