I guess it makes sense if you view him as a similar type of player, if vastly inferior, to Hummels if that target was never likely then he may have been the next on the list.

As much as I don't mind seeing him leave, anything less than 10 million will be a joke.

One hell of a shot on his left, regular forays into the opposition half.

I never, ever rated him as a defender and thought when people were of the opinion he was good they were focusing on the fact that he was a decent footballer and ignoring his positional failings and defensive lapses.

He's always been one of those tipped to be very good from when he was young and when he joined Arsenal I remember him actually being pretty good until he started getting injured all the time. Can certainly remember him scoring a few as well. I wouldnt be gutted or anything but he definitely wasn't someone I would have wanted or expected.

You shouldn't be getting him for his defensive ability, can't see why Van Gaal would have him over your current bunch.

He'll probably convert him to a more advanced role.
