A self-sustaining, successful football league is not built around old, foreign has-beens. I wouldn't be too worried.
Eric Portapotty
This is a league which has seriously considered fining teams who finish in the wrong end of the table for next season.
I'm just glad they learnt from the A-League and included a Marquee player slot for the teams, beats punishing teams already without the financial clout to improve their squad, with more financial handicaps.

The MLS has been since about 5 years ago and that's doing better than ever.
Franck
The only reason the MLS has survived for as long as it has is that it has learnt from the mistakes of the NASL.
The MLS has built their league around young American talent, the DP's are nothing more than expensive sideshows, available only to a small fraction of the teams in the league. The success of the league in markets like Columbus, Seattle and Toronto has nothing to do with them.
Flash.
Since Beckham has joined the MLS the gate income has risen drastically. Average attendances have risen 20%, overtaking hockey and basketball.
Viewing figures around the world have increased dramatically since then. No one in Europe watched MLS until Beckham joined.
High profile players, specifically Beckham, have had a massive impact on the league. The league would be nowhere near this level with out them. There's a reason why these teams pay these players so much and why the MLS bend over backwards to get them.
Zog
It's all about marketing and its neccesary for a League like the MLS to have these big draw players as it gives the league a profile which ultimately gets more people inside the stadium. You need a core of young homegrown talent too but to say the league is built on that is silly, if the league was just full of those players nobody would watch the games and the league would get no publicity.

We need another striker regardless of how good Giroud has been. If he gets injured we're buggered.

Podolski, Walcott, Gervinho, Chamakh?
I can't see Huntelaar wanting to sit on the bench and it would be stupid benching Giroud when he's finally coming good.

1) QPR play badly and get hammered: "Well the players were understandably out of form following the news of Marks Hughes' sacking"
2) QPR play decent enough - "The players really wanted to show their ability and determination and give a good performance to thank Mark for his efforts"

Some nice europa league quality strikers right there.

Not sure any club above Europa League level would take Walcott as a striker, mind.

Fair point.
Mind you, I wouldn't be surprised if you did that and QPR still managed to lose. Mark Bowen and Eddie Nyswzckiziwi (something like that) aren't much better than Hughes.
