I'll have a go:

The 'safe' option is always 'Balanced' team training - however, if you use the squad comparison screen you can work out any general training that needs improving. Remember that training, even general team training, is just a way to increase attribute values, so your players will work on attributes.

MATCH PREP: I always prefer one day before the match on match prep - pre-season and first few weeks of season usually keep it on Tactics, from then on it depends on my opposition, but this is used ONLY to prepare for one game with no real long-term benefits.

INDIVIDUAL: use this to train attributes. Position training is just a group of attributes that are trained together.

So, assuming everything is set to average, look at individual players and workloads - a player has to go through team training, as well as follow his individual traning SO anyhitng you add from here will increase his workload - focused training on specific attributes and PPM training will work him harder. You need to be aware of what all your players are doing individually to understand how general training affects them.

SO, my preferred method is - get them match fit pre-season. This can only be done through playing friendlies so my pre-season is a friendly every three days or so, squad rotation and tactical familiarity.

General Training is set as 'average' as my default. If I have two games in the next seven days I drop it to Low, no games for a week I increase it to High. BUT you have to be mindful of players individual workloads.

REst day after the game is standard for me, and occasionally give players an extra day manually if they are high injury risk.

Across the whole club, my u18s are training heavily, training is better for them than matches.
Reserves / u23s are training and/or being loaned out - match time is more beneficial once they are over 18

Hope that helps
