We'd need five or six really good players to compete for the title, but perhaps three or four decent ones to get top four. That's not good enough though, given the amount of money we have and the ambition we supposedly hold. Spurs will be good again this year, with or without Bale, and Liverpool might even be a threat if Suarez gets back to his best for them.

No matter how you divide up £40m it's too much for either one player or the other.
It doesn't matter how much Everton signed Fellaini for, because as soon as they put the clause in his contract no club is going to pay a penny more for him than that, the fact no club was willing to pay that, either, should tell you that if he's going to be sold then its going to be for less than that. If Everton don't want to sell him fine, but I don't want to see us spunking money in desperation on a player thats not worth it.
This squad romped home last season, if we have to survive another season without midfield reinforcements I'd rather we did that and approach next summer better than buy Fellaini in a ridiculous bid.

I'm not saying you should spend £40m on the pair of them, I'm just saying that if I was Roberto Martinez I'd be extremely annoyed if we sold the pair of them for less than that considering they're not making a big stink about wanting to leave, nor are Everton desperate to sell.
£40m or not, £28 is far too low. £16m of that appears to be for Fellaini which seems somewhat ridiculous as that is what Everton paid for him, except now he's improved massively and has five years of Premier League experience.

I doubt we actually thought we could sign Fabregas for £25 mil, or that Chelsea believed we would sell Rooney for less than that.
I remember Arsenal fans defending this exact same tactic when Wenger offered £6m for Ashley Williams last year.

Nah, that main issue here was you suggesting that it was completely ridiculous for Everton to hold out for £40m+
tmatthew
They're their players, they can hold out for £80 million if they want.
I simply found it funny that someone suggested they were valued at that amount.

Julian.
Do you think you really stand any chance for the title even if you get five or six players?
tmatthew
Besides the fact that we don't need Baines, I wouldn't really object to £35m.

No one's said they're not.
Just that £28m for both is about £7m less than I'd be happy to pay for the pair, not an absolute mile away like Everton seem to want.

£28M for just Fellaini I'd be okay with, but anymore and we should go for someone else. I just hope we don't waste these finally couple weeks of the window, like we wasted time dithering over Thiago before we made a bid for Cesc and dithered too much on Cesc etc.

No he wasn't. His running masked the rest of his game.

I thought even if we had a productive summer we wouldn't win the title but I thought we could at least challenge. If we bring in five or six top quality players, spending £70-80m in the process, then we might just be contenders. It's irrelevant, though, as we won't spend that. I'd be amazed if we spent half.
