It depends on who you are and how you're playing etc. If you've very particular on how you want your side to play I think you can get upto 8 instructions, I tend to have around 6 but I do know of people who play with maybe 1 or 2 instructions and that is it.

The more you have, the longer it takes your teams to become fluid with your tactics and the harder it is for new players to embed into your system

Hope this helps

I have 17 instructions... although it doesn't seem to hinder my team or new players too much.

I normally have six instructions but this season w/ Manchester City I have been playing the majority of the season with zero instructions and I've still had a tremendous season to date.

i have 8 atm with my southampton do these work well?

shorter passing, work ball into box, play out of defense, retain possession, high line, press more, higher tempo, play wider
with control and fluid?

It depends on your formation & players.

I only have 6 basic team instructions: Retain Possession - Play Out Of Defence - Much Higher DL - Play Offside Trap - Much Lower Tempo - Be More Expressive. These are my basic TI's for my main Control tactic, I also set up two other similar formations, one with Attack Mentality + Play Wider and one with Counter Mentality + Play Narrower. I then add other TI's as needed on a match to match basis.

I have 9, but I try to use as few as possible.

I think the important thing is not to worry about what others are using here is to work out what is good for your team and formation. For example I have my two full backs pushing on so obviously they are sticking wide and we look to exploit the wings. My left winger plays inside forward so drifts in allowing space for my left back to crack on.

Takes time to tweak the bits you need.

I don't think there's such a thing as "too many" as long as you don't select instructions that are contradictory.

so having control and higher tempo is stupid?

Not necessarily, but if you're looking to play really suffocating tiki-taka that gets 70% possession a higher tempo isn't ideal as it encourages your players to get the ball up the field more quickly.
