After the (not so) success of my 'Trip to' save with Guangzhou Evergrande (see here), I've begun a new journey - in South Africa, with Orlando Pirates!

After experiencing all of what Asia had to offer at the top level, I've decided to play in Africa with last year's Premier Soccer League second place side. They've not won the title since 2011-12, so that'll be the aim for season one. However, as I always mention, I am no god at this game whatsoever (shocking, right!), so don't expect anything major.

July/August 2018 Round-up:

Upcoming Fixtures:

Pre-season with a slight twist. I'm managing Orlando Pirates in the South African top-flight, however my first month or so in charge will feature more than just friendlies. As you can see from the above screenshot, that's what we faced in mid-July but that has since chopped and changed due to other commitments. I ended up cancelling all but one of the friendlies, as competitive fixtures filled our schedule - which, I was absolutely fine with. Here's the fixture round-up:

A successful start to the 2018-19 season in South Africa, not that I'll be getting carried away especially as this is similar to how I started with Guangzhou Evergrande! Three (four including Be The Coach) competitive matches, three competitive victories.

After a friendly win over Maritzburg City, we met Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the cool Be The Coach. For those who don't know, it's an interactive competition in South African football played yearly by Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, with supporters (via a sponsor) picking the matchday squads and in-game substitutions; hence the name. In Football Manager, it's the same except for the line-up/substitutions - the fans picked my matchday squad. So fortunately I can blame the defeat to the Chiefs on them! Even in a friendly trophy, it was still disappointing to lose to our big rivals.

It didn't faze us though, as we followed it with four straights wins; firstly in a friendly with Mozambique's Ferroviário Maputo. The Top 8 Cup got underway on 15 August, it's a tournament where the top eight placed teams from the previous Premier Soccer League season take part to see who is best. We were drawn in the quarter-finals with Free State Stars, subsequently easing past them 3-0. The semi-final first leg followed days later against Maritzburg United, where we scored another three goals (having gone a goal down, though) to secure a comfortable if not tie-securing 3-1 win for the second leg. August ended with our PSL opener, we played and beat AmaZulu.

Pleasing times, but we must keep it up. So, Be the Coach, Top 8 Cup and the PSL have all begun but the Knockout Cup and FA Cup are still yet to get underway, as is our CAF Champions League campaign; which we have to wait until late 2018/early 2019 for (due to its scheduling).

Transfers:

It sure feels good to be able to sign players (looking at you, Chinese Super League!)

As you'll see in the screenshot, the club made a load of signings but only the last two were made by me. I signed a CAM and a FW, both players I know about (not deeply, but enough) from real life: Tshegofatso Mabaso, Bloemfontein Celtic (CAM, South Africa, £60k) & Talent Chawapiwa, Baroka (FW, Zimbabwe, £32.5k). I was going to scout them first, but decided to trust my gut feeling and sign them before the scout reports arrived. So far, so good. I've been impressed with them, both have a goal to their name already.

Glad to see you're back at it mate! Orlando Pirates are a good team am sure you'll get them back to the top in no time! On my worldwide journeyman saves I have South Africa loaded just I've never got round to managing there and never managed to grab the African Champions league on my pentagon challenges either.

As a side note, when are you starting your long term journeyman save?

Same here, I've only managed small teams from South Africa - Santos FC are the ones that stick in my memory, got them promoted from the second tier - was an enjoyable spell. As for my Journeyman, I'm thinking either Europe or North & South America. I'll probably go for the latter, particularly South America seems fun to manage in.

We secured a spot in the Top 8 Cup final, drawing in the second leg with Maritzburg United to go through on aggregate. Nice beginning to September, which continued into our PSL match with Free State Stars - a team we beat earlier in the campaign in the Top 8 Cup, and we got past them again in the league; winning 3-1, Thembinkosi Lorch was superb. Sadly, we did suffer our opening defeat next time out against Bidvest Wits - a very convincing 2-0 loss. It came in a stupendously busy period, the Wits game fell two days after the FS Stars fixture and two days before our following PSL game - against Chippa United. Crazy.

We hit back from the scheduling and Wits loss by putting four unanswered goals past Chippa Utd. Consecutive 0-2 away wins have since occurred over Maritzburg United and Polokwane City, Thamsanqa Gabuza scored in both encounters that were his only two appearances so far this season - impressive.

October 2018 sees us come into it in good form, but with it still early days we knew we had to carry on our positive performances. Five matches in store, though only three different opponents as we had back-to-back matches with both Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City. Not exactly the type of teams you want to be facing all that much. The third opponent wasn't much easier - title rivals Golden Arrows.

Just one win from five matches, not the greatest but at least we won the biggest game of them all - the Top 8 Cup final. Champions! That's Orlando Pirates' first triumph in that competition since 2011-12, the same year they last won the Premier Soccer League title. Good omen? Not if we don't pick up our league form, we may not have lost a PSL fixture this month (three draws) but October ends with Cape Town City four points clear. Still wide open no doubt, but our performances this month left quite a bit to be desired. Main disappointment was the first encounter with Cape Town City, who have eliminated us from the Knockout Cup.

Upcoming Fixtures:

November saw us face Baroka (2nd) and Bloemfontein Celtic (12th) in the Premier Soccer League, so differing tests. We had been scheduled to face Black Leopards at the end of the month, but that was rescheduled due to the welcomed start of the CAF Champions League. After Orlando Pirates finished 2nd in real life in 2017-18, they qualify for this Champions League; which we've had to wait for due to the competition's change in format irl. We'll face Tonnerre from Benin over two legs, which we are big favourites for; just leg one fell in November. We also had a few friendlies.

A positive month. Title rivals Baroka were beaten comfortably at the start of November, we did then drop points to underperforming Bloem Celtic but I wasn't too annoyed as we actually played OK, just couldn't finish our dinner. Back-to-back friendly wins were expected, but it gave us good momentum for the Champions League opener with Tonnerre where we put on a show for the locals. We put nine unanswered goals past the Championnat National club, which included some great goals. That certainly puts the tie to bed, which means I can gratefully rest my team for the second leg back on home soil. A win was always going to come, but it was nice to score nine.

I have Orlando Pirates sitting 4th in the PSL table, but it is extremely tight at the top. 1st to 6th are separated by only six points, so a strong run of form could put us right up there. I'm looking forward to December's action, which includes the first Soweto derby of the league campaign.

Definitely, goals were to be expected but refreshing to deliver on the expectation for once! Too many times on FM I struggle against the lowly sides.

With any lower rep teams I always go all out attack as the game likes to give you bad performances against lower tier squads.

Top of the league and through in the Champions League. I can't ask for more than that! A really enjoyable month of football with Orlando Pirates. That's despite December actually starting poor, as we drew with mid-table Highlands Park; they were 0-2 up so we done well to take a point. We completed our demolition of Beninese team Tonnerre by beating them 9-0 again, even with our complete reserve team we didn't suffer any trouble whatsoever; a resounding 18-0 aggregate win. That set up a tie in the following round against Morocco's Ittihad Tanger.

Before we faced the Moroccans, we had two massive Premier Soccer League encounters over Black Leopards and SuperSport United; both on the road. We passed both tests with flying colours, winning 0-1 and 0-2 respectively; Xola Mlambo coming up with two goals, he was frozen out by myself at the start of the season as I wasn't convinced by him but has knuckled down and, after getting his chance recently, become a key member of my first eleven - fair play to that man! After the PSL win double, we prepared for Ittihad Tanger in the first leg of the first round of the Champions League. We returned home from the Stade Ibn Batouta with a convincing 0-3 victory, Thamsanqa Gabuza coming up big with a brace. Great win.

Days later came the big Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs, one that ended in a 1-1 draw which felt disappointing at the time but looking back it was probably a good point. Then arrived the second leg in continental competition versus Ittihad Tanger. I rested my squad like last time out, which showed as we somewhat laboured to a low-scoring tie. I wasn't fussed though, progression was all I wanted. I believe that means we are through to the group stages, which are apparently set for January? Not heard anything yet, though. December ended in the best possible way: we beat AmaZulu away from home to go top of the PSL table, thanks to other results. I think it's the first time we've been top.

It's our goal to keep ourselves in first place. It is now the 'winter break', no PSL games set until February 2019; though my next post may be sooner depending on the aforementioned Champions League situation. Looking good!

Upcoming Fixtures:

January was CAF Champions League month. Our group in Africa's main club competition was drawn on 5 January, pitting us against Al-Hilal (Sudan), Petro de Luanda (Angola) and Saoura (Algeria). We faced our opening two fixtures, facing a trip to Angola and a hosting of the Sudanese club. A friendly was also scheduled to a fill a gap.

Happy opening month of 2019. As mentioned, our Champions League run continued and we head into February with two wins out of two. Petro de Luanda were dismantled with ease on matchday one, a clinical six-goal victory was achieved. That was followed with a win over, I'd say, our biggest competitors in Group A - Al-Hilal. Xola Mlambo scored for us in a 1-0 win, but the scoreline flatters our visitors as we were dominant and didn't even allow them a shot. We're the only team in our group with back-to-backs victories. Another four goals and a third clean sheet of January followed in a home friendly win over Moretele Gunners.

The Premier Soccer League returns mid-February, no-one else has played either so we remain 1st - which is where we sit in the Champions League. Very pleased! Our FA Cup first round opponents are now known, we'll face fellow PSL side Maritzburg United; we have actually signed a player from them in the January market, which can be seen below.

A: Transfers! Our one and only new signing was Siphesihle Ndlovu, who has been one of the players of the season so far with Maritzburg and is just 22 years old. Loads of players departed, eight men to be precise - all were just squad players who kicked up a fuss to leave:

A busy February awaited, six games were slated to be played. The FA Cup also comes in to play, fellow PSL team Maritzburg United were drawn against us. Busy times!

Yet again, a fantastic month for us! Six encounters, six victories! The first allowed us to make it three wins from three in Group A in the CAF Champions League, defeating Algerian team Saoura by a single goal in Béchar; which took us to within one point from advancing from the group. An expected 5-1 friendly win followed, prior to a key Champions League match - Al-Hilal away. Three points were secured in some style, we went four goals ahead which guareenteed the points and subsequent advancement from Group A - conceding two late goals didn't dampen our spirits, delighted to get through to the quarter-finals! Tougher ties await. A week after our continental high, we returned to league action for the first time since December 2018. In our absence, a few of our rivals had played a league match which means we were/still are a game behind everyone else so dropped off top spot.

However, our fine form continued as we beat Free State Stars on the road after goals from Paseka Mako and Innocent Maela - a very strong performance. That cannot be said about our next match though, as we narrowly scraped past Maritzburg United in the FA Cup. Admittedly I did rotate my entire team, starting with players who had barely featured this season alongside one or two youngsters. Even so, the performance was very poor and Maritzburg deserved wholeheartedly to progress, but thankfully we got the luck and went through on penalties. Days later, we actually faced Maritzburg Utd again - in the Premier Soccer League. This time, it was roles reversed as our returning stars dominated the fixture and secured a strong 2-0 win; despite leaving it somewhat late.

Things are looking bright. As I said, we have been knocked off the top in the PSL but through no fault of our own - current leaders Cape Town City have played a game more. Champions League and FA Cup progression secured, we've been drawn with (in-game) non-league side Super Eagles in the latter, which gives us a tremendous chance of advancing. We remain in three competitions, as we aim to add to our trophy collection having already won the Top 8 Cup earlier this season.

The 2018-19 season continues into March 2019. Our predicament heading into the year's third month was positive, we sat 2nd in the Premier Soccer League and had already qualified for the knockout rounds of the CAF Champions League with two games to spare; we're also still in the FA Cup. A few friendlies were also scheduled due to an end of month free period, including a testimonial for Happy Jele.

Up and down month. Extremely disappointing opening two fixtures, both coming in the PSL against Bidvest Wits and Chippa United. We lost to title rivals Wits before drawing with bottom half side Chippa Utd, very poor results; ground lost in our quest for the league trophy. In other competitions, we've had more happier results. Petro de Luanda were defeated in the Champions League, prior to putting six past lower league Super Eagles in the FA Cup to advance to the quarter-finals; where we'll face Baroka. Unfortunately we didn't managed to win 100% of our Champions League group games, as we dropped points at home to bottom club Saoura. Standard. Progression is all that counts though, Zamalek (Egypt) await us. Lastly, both friendlies were won - including Jele's testimonial. In the PSL, we're 4pts off top with a game in hand.

What a month April was. Eight fixtures were scheduled across three competitions, which would be extended if we managed to advance in the cups. Even without that, we still had some mighty fixture congestion; including three games in six days towards the end of April. We've certainly been tested, as the critical stages of our season arrives. What a crazy month. Ten (!) fixtures were played after we advanced in the CAF Champions League and the PSL even moved a league game into this month, thanks for that! All that is without our progression in the FA Cup, as we were eliminated by Baroka; I was forced to play a back-up line-up due to the aforementioned reasons. Overall though, I'm very pleased with how we've done this month; given all the prerequisites.

We only lost two matches, one was that FA Cup tie while the other was the first leg in the CAF CL versus Zamalek - which didn't mean much in the end as we won the home leg to go through to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, we've been drawn with fellow South African club Mamelodi Sundowns. The first leg has been played, which ended in an action-packed 2-2 draw; painful to concede an equaliser on 95mins, but two away-goals is a positive - the second leg promises to be a nervy encounter.

We also faced Sundowns in the Premier Soccer League, beating them 0-2 away from home; which was one of four league wins this month. Those wins and the fact we were undefeated in league action was huge, as the PSL title race is incredibly close. You can see the table below, we are sitting second but level on points with leaders and city rivals Kaizer Chiefs. That's not all, as Bidvest Wits and Cape Town City are just one and two points off respectively and both have a game in hand. We face fierce rivals Kaizer Chiefs on the penultimate day, that could be a Soweto derby for the ages! Tense times ahead either way.

So to recap, the title race is very much alive and any one of four clubs could still win it with just one month left to play. We're one game away from the CAF Champions League final, a competition Orlando Pirates haven't won since 1995; though the board's expectation is to reach the final. There'll be no FA Cup glory for us this campaign, as we're out of that tournament. Disappointing for sure, but there's no doubting the PSL and CAF CL are way more important to players, staff, fans and board alike. May will be squeaky bum time, as Sir Alex would say.

Two things to share.

A: Here's the media's look at the domestic title race, they released that prior to the Bloem Celtic game but it still stands up:

B: Right back on 2 April, I was offered and I subsequently signed a new contract with Orlando Pirates:
