A feature often overlooked but brimming with potential is the ability to assign nicknames in Football Manager. While it may seem like a small detail, nicknames add a personal touch to the managerial experience, offering both practical benefits and deeper engagement. Managers are able to rename players, staff, and even themselves within the game.

How to Assign Nicknames?

Assigning nicknames in FM24 is simple:

Right-click on a person’s name.

Select “Misc” > “Set Nickname.”

Enter the nickname of your choice and click “Ok”.

Why Use Nicknames?

Facilitate Scouting

Assigning nicknames to scouts based on their Judging Player Ability (JPA), Judging Player Potential (JPP), and their specific country or regional expertise streamlines scouting assignments. This approach allows you to quickly identify the best scout for each task, ensuring efficient coverage and maximizing the chances of uncovering hidden talent.

Players on shortlists can be nicknamed based on their key traits, concerns, or standout features for quick reference.

Youth Squad Management

To effectively manage the youth players that break into 1st Team you should nickname them based on traits, development stage or tactical fit. Assigning nicknames reflecting standout attributes, media comparisons, or roles helps identify their strengths and progression at a glance. For example, a quick winger might be nicknamed “Blazing Wing,” or a promising playmaker, “Mini Modric.”

Advanced Youth Squad Management

Managing a squad with dozens of youth players, especially with regens, can quickly become overwhelming. Assigning nicknames based on their side (R or L), Position, Role/Duty under training, and their rank within the team hierarchy(1, 2, 3) can bring much-needed clarity and organization. This simple strategy can make a significant difference in squad management, helping you track development and tactical fit at a glance.

Once they are prepared to 1st team or developed into interesting players you can give them back some personality, changing back the nickname to player’s name and maybe a standout characteristic.

Nicknames are a perfect way to inject humor and personality into your save. Whether it’s renaming a rival manager with something cheeky or giving a lighthearted nickname to a player for their inconsistency, these customizations add a unique and personal layer of enjoyment to your Football Manager journey. It’s also fun to give all your youngsters nicknames, making it easier to keep track of them even after they’re released or sold.
