#366542 Newcastle Thread

“In 2011/12 nobody that got relegated came straight back up. In 2012/13 nobody came straight back up automatically out of the three relegated.
“One (QPR) came up in the play-off and the next season (2014/15) one in the play-off (Norwich).
“After that one came up automatically (Burnley) and one (Hull) in the play-off, so it’s not easy.
Good that he's done his research. Can't half arse the excuse preparation.

It's the tactics though. The players aren't supposed to go forward
Also seriously worried about the 'ambition' around the club - people genuinely upset about only finishing 10th now seemed to be resigned to being unable to compete with Brighton
Also reckon last time was loads harder - WBA immediately set themselves up in midtable along with us, and Nottm Forest went on a crazy winning/unbeaten streak.

This was all relevant when we were winning games - We were just lucky to eke them games out with no one really paying attention.
The Shelvey thing is an easy excuse - no other team has a 'creative' midfielder and goals still happen. We need pressure - which we rarely provide. No real pressing, no bombardment of the box, no one willing to beat a man - very little through balls or crosses, CM's rarely getting into the box, Wingers not holding width, and full backs never overlapping. And never any substitutions.

And are the 'Americans' even doing anything differently to what Jenkins has been doing for years?
They sold Gomis / Ayew / Williams in the summer seems to be the big problem? - but they've been doing that for years - they're luck was going to run out eventually.
Also think Monk and then last year Guidolin steered them to much higher positions than they actually 'deserved'

Isaac Hayden would be up there with the Des Hamilton's of the world if he was signed by Dalglish/Souness or someone less popular.

Allardyce (or whoever) should keep Palace up with ease - especially a defensive minded coach as Dann and Tomkins have looked like jokes whenever I've seen them this season. Sort them out, get Townsend and Benteke firing and they should be up by 12th with no bother.

That was by far the best Newcastle have played all season. - Birmingham were ropey at the back - but no worse than a lot of the 'better' sides of this division.
Thought the fans were cunty though - Sarcastic cheering like it's Steve Kean era Blackburn or something

Isaac Hayden looked like a proper footballer today, Diame with one of the most amazing first half's, Shelvey showing his genuine class, and Gayle just standing a yard out putting the ball in.
The Forest game has really got me up for this season.

Like Blind, Rojo, Darmian etc, are all weird and seem to never play in there actual positions. No actual wingers, aside from really limited Lingard? A lot of slow players.
Man Utd's squad looks like what you'd expect if you left Rodgers in charge, with a blank chequebook, and no oversight.
Much love for Conte mind, that's how you do it - play to your strengths and actually find solutions.

And also a lot of terrible decisions, like booking Gouffran and Yedlin for a minor tackle and refusing to book there players for much worse challenges. Booking Darlow for dissent, but not Lansbury. Lichaj also went down holding his head from a shoulder barge.
It was one of them performances, where tbh, it looks like the referee is trying to make a name for himself, rather than trying to officiate the game fairly.

But that was a joke. Lansbury and Lichaj need lengthy bans.

I'll reserve praise for Benitez for when he merits it.
If we're sitting in the top ten and playing nice football, then fair enough.

He's only two points ahead of Chris Hughton (who was sacked for not being good enough)
And after all the conspiracy theories about how Ashley was demanding Newcastle finish 17th every season - Benitez has just thrown away a cup tie by playing a reserve keeper in a winnable quarter final against a shite team with ten men.
It's the absolute inverse of Pardew - where people would believe the worst to try and bend reality to fit perception. He left Newcastle in ninth with a team regularly featuring Obertan, Ameobi, Williamson, Abied, Alnwick and Riviere. People still hate him. Benitez is a miracle worker for being two points clear ahead of Brighton with about 20 times the budget.

Besides I'm sure we'll see loads of criticism of Selz, but none of the cunt who played him. (He made Newcastle a football club again. He made us hope again)

Shelvey has talent but is hopeless if Colback isn't playing, Hayden doesn't know how to play centre midfield, Atsu can deliver a moment, but is otherwise fairly shite, and Ritchie is out of form and totally average.
Dummett was probably our classiest player going forward.....
Maybe I'm being unfair, but with all the hype over Benitez I see this season as a dress rehearsal for next season and we should be looking for top ten at a minimum, and we look absolute relegation fodder.

Without Colback and Gouffran we're woefully short of class.

Chronicle literally arguing that the PL and the Championship are equal standard.
They've even provided this helpful list of Championship goalscorers - Who all went on to light up the Premier League
Nathan Ellington (Wigan Athletic, 2004/05) - 24 goals
Marlon King (Watford, 2005/06) - 21 goals
Jamie Cureton (Colchester United, 2006/07) - 23 goals
Sylvain Ebanks-Blake (Plymouth Argyle and Wolverhampton Wanderers, 2007/08) - 23 goals
Sylvain Ebanks-Blake (Wolverhampton Wanderers, 2008/09) - 25 goals
Peter Whittingham (Cardiff City, 2009/10)/ Nicky Maynard (Bristol City, 2009/10) - 20 goals
Danny Graham (Watford, 2010/11) - 24 goals
Rickie Lambert (Southampton, 2011/12) - 27 goals
Glenn Murray (Crystal Palace, 2012/13) - 30 goals
Ross McCormack (Leeds United, 2013/14) - 28 goals
Daryl Murphy (Ipswich Town, 2014/15) - 27 goals
Andre Gray (Burnley, 2015/16) - 25 goals
Dwight Gayle (Newcastle United, 2016/17) - 13 goals*
Can't be arsed to look it up but decent chance if you remove Lambert - Shola has scored more than the rest combined.
Of you remove Gayle - Anichebe probs has more than the rest combined.

It's hard to say. Arguably Gore has the exact same problem as HRC. Seen as a party hack insider attempting to win a third term. Which is the exact inverse of Obama, as a fresh outsider without the mainstream support of the DNC, trying to win a first term. Mittens Romney was also a terrible candidate to appeal to the poor four years ago - which will add to the swing.
The economy is also completely different as well, which is another factor, imo people were probably a lot more optimistic in 1999.
I'm hopeful Trump losing the popular vote, and winning on an extremely low voter turnout means that Trump actually has limited appeal and only a smallish number of people are fanatical about him. Compared to Brexit, were extremely high turnout, meant Britain was just racist.
