I was wondering if anyone can help me.... I'm playing FM09 again and kits look weird when used. They either have a shadow outline:

Or have a grey box:

Does anyone know how to fix/remove these?

Thanks in advance for any help!

FM 2009 used to create 2D kits from the 3D texture, so that's the reason why you see that grey box in the background: it's an automatic viewer.

If you want to use custom 2d kits you have to download the archive I attached and extract the xml within into the “panels” folder in your "\Documents\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009”.

If the “panels” folder is not already inside that path, you have to create it.

Really?! Why did they ever remove that functionality 😅

They probably were not happy with this experimental feature. The 2D model was the same for all kits, so maybe they thought it was not adequate to correctly replicate kit collar variations or something like that. I'm just speculating.

Since the next version (FM 2010) they reverted back to 2D separate kits images.

Yeah I think the 2D kit model today is much more capable of having that perfect sync between 3D and 2D, essentially because the 3D kit quality is better than in 2009. They still generate the 2D kits from 3D, but export them and then import them as PNG files of course. Even though this way the unlicensed kits do not have the same quality and for example lighting, which IMO is not ideal.

I hope SI will still switch back to the actual 3D to 2D mapping on the minikit again, and when there is a 2D PNG image it will just overwrite. But it would just reduce all the noise and download makers will only have to focus on 3D to get all kits done in FM. Imagine how fast we would get all the leagues done (I mean of the playable leagues and even more) if all kitcreators would focus on 3D only. I mean, Standard Kits, FC'12, SS, LS, … look at how many styles there are. It's ridiculous. Would be great if those were just 3D models where the kit is mapped upon and it always uses 3D as a base.

Maybe question for high-quality skinners as @Bluestillidie00 - could we still implement back these 3D model previews for 2D like in 2009 into newer generation FMs?

This happens because the game tries to load some default kits even though you have the new ones.

You need an .xml file called “kit panel”, and you need to use it (by placing it in the panels folder) for every skin.

I don't remember if I did something else with the resource archiver, maybe I used it to place the panel in the default skins as well, but that's it.

EDIT: I had the browser tab opened and didn't see the previous answers, sorry
