Arsenal have apparently made a £22 Million bid for Fellaini

Arsenal have made a sensational £22 million bid for Marouane Fellaini, Goal can reveal.

The Gunners have activated the release clause in the Everton midfielder's contract and are confident of wrapping up a deal for the 25-year-old in the coming weeks.

Goal understands that Arsenal made the club-record bid on Wednesday, the same day that Roberto Martinez was appointed the new Everton manager.

It is believed that Fellaini's buy-out clause is £22m for a top-four club, and £24m for a club that finishes outside the Champions League places.

The Belgian has been consistently linked with Chelsea in the last 12 months and speculation of a switch to Manchester United has intensified since Dave Moyes' appointment last month.

But Arsenal have made the first formal move for the Belgian in what is the first flexing of the London club's new-found muscle in the transfer market.

A midfield of Walcott, Fellaini, Wilshere and Oxlade-Chamberlain wouldn't be bad.

Manchester United were considered Fellaini's most likely suitors after David Moyes took over but moving to the Emirates is now considered most likely after Arsenal were backed in from 16/1 to 6/4.

Arsenal Invincibles and late 90's teams were miles better.

Vieira is one of the greatest PL CM's ever. And he was partnered with either Petit or Gilberto - both World Cup winners.

Then on the wings Ljungberg and Pires both had phenomenal goalscoring records and were absolutely incredible during the whole invincible era. Overmars and Bergkamp were also very, very good players.

Henry probably occupies very similar spaces to Walcott as well, just on the the opposite side.

This would be fucking incredible if we pulled it off.

The current side has nothing on the Invincibles, obviously, and guys like Oxlade-Chamberlain and Wilshere have a long way to go before they can be mentioned in the same breath of some of our greats. It's an exciting time, though, if we really do have the money and the desire to spend it in the coming years.

Fellaini would be a good signing but ain't near the level of Vieira.

Fellaini is 25, Walcott 24, Wilshere 21 and Chamberlin 19.

They're all young and still have a lot of potential.

25 and 24 isn't that young. Vieira and Henry had both won major international honours by that stage and Vieira was already a key man in a double winning side.
