Apparently Cardiff are about to sign Gary Medel (who's a total nutcase, for those who don't know) from Sevilla for €13m.

Deal confirmed.

Aye it's shit how promoted teams all spend a fortune these days.

They should be forced to sign players from a list of Premier League back up players and relegated teams better players. One big money exotic signing only, who is likely to flop and be loaned back to their native country in January. (Someone like Mauro Boselli). At least Steve Bruce gets it.

Gustavo isn't available for £15M.

According to late reports today, you're absolutely right...it would be £14million.

It's the foreign owners and their short-termism.

The same thing will happen if Leicester/Forest get promoted, or worse.

Yes. What's your point?

80-90% of talk in this thread relates to rumours that never materialize.

I don't think it is short-termism. The amount of cash clubs get once promoted has risen hugely since the middle of the last decade and it sometimes feels like we're still stuck in that mindset. At least sometimes I am and I need to re-check my thinking: staying up is so lucrative it makes complete sense to purchase high value players who can bring something to the club. I was as surprised as anyone by Gaston Ramirez's arrival in Southampton, but it's moves like that which will help you cement your place.

You only have to look at how difficult it was for newly promoted sides in the early 2000s just to stay in the league, because they simply didn't have the funds, to realise that it is in your best interests to go all out to secure top flight status. I haven't got any statistics to hand, but I'd bet the survival rate of newly promoted sides from the last five years is higher than from ten years ago, because they can support themselves better.

The amount of wealth in the Premier League in general is absurd anyway. It just happens some are more willing to flash the cash than others, particularly Championship sides promoted who panic by thinking survival can be achieved by forking out huge sums when QPR provided the perfect argument against that theory.

Not that last season completely disproved it for new boys given big-spending Southampton stayed up and a Reading team that spent very little went instantly back down.

I can't imagine Crystal Palace forking out £8.5M on Dwight Gayle is that good thinking. Though who knows.

Agreed on that second point though, assuming Leicester ever get promoted given they seem to have managed big-spending mediocrity in the Championship. Forest maybe a better bet for that.

I think Southampton have quite a lot of backing from Liebherr's estate.

Yeah I agree, it's quite clever because even if they flop or the side get relegated, they'll still retain most of their market value on the continent especially. Worst case scenario is Ramirez is sent to Inter for £6m or something.

But even a couple of years ago, Norwich and Swansea were strengthening their side by signing Danny Graham, Johnny Howson and Elliot Bennett. This is how it should be.

Good old MacAnthony in 'pushing up the price until some dummy actually pays it' shocker. He's done it with Mackail-Smith, Bennett and Boyd before. Either someone pays what he wants or he'll just let them run their contracts down.

It's 3m up front, which makes it more reasonable. Looking at the pricing of supposedly decent strikers from the Championship that figure is not absurd. I would need to know exactly what the add-ons are though, although even if it's just a s simple as, say, £2m if they survive then you have to say it's worth it.
