I've been playing around with making the /graphics take up less space and just thought I'd share my results in case anyone else wanna give it a go, or perhaps if sortitoutsi could hook up some automated compression, at least on new images being uploaded?
So I've been using FileOptimizer, which is a GUI to run multiple lossless compressions/optimizations on pretty much any kind of files. So on PNGs, by default, it runs PngOptimizer, TruePNG, PNGOut, OptiPNG, Leanify, pngwolf, pngrewrite, advpng, ECT, pingo, deflopt and defluff. I've disabled some of them, and I'm seeing a ~16% reduction in filesizes, but it's taking absolutely forever due to the brute-force nature of PNG optimizations.
So to have a more concrete suggestion, I extracted the 100 first in numerical order to try some different combinations of optimizations, and here are my results
So PngOptimizer seems like a real boost without taking a lot of time, and pingo is also pretty efficient for the cutout type of images.
I've also run FileOptimizer on all JPEGs, and that is ALOT faster, and also gives some nice gains.
I recently used Optimage on my Mac to compress a massive collection of over 342,000 PNG images, all of which were face images. The process took quite a while, as you can imagine, given the sheer number of files. But the results were definitely worth the wait. By the time Optimage finished, it had freed up a whopping 7.43 GB of storage space. It was impressive to see just how much space could be saved, even with files that were already in a compressed format. Although the process was time-consuming, the significant storage gain made it completely worthwhile.
