I normally don't get fired-up by challenges (specially those really long ones), but since this is just one season, with a big team but still very challenging, I'll be trying it for sure, as soon as I finish my current season in my career (probably by sunday or monday). Will post pictures here. I just hope I don't lose in the first or second trophy, ha ha!.

Thanks mate, very well written.

2 friendlies before Gaúcho State Championship started, tried to test a new tactic and it didn't work out. We have a saying here, "Em time que está ganhando não se mexe", which would be something like "You don't make changes to a team that is winning", so I changed back to our traditional 4-3-3 with wingers and got some good results:

(also, I'm not so lazy anymore and I'll be posting the images in a more fashionable way, like you guys do ):

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/yXnXjOSDiXPdWsfj0niC7vXMnsAcMWRRC81TEPfl.png

I also bought 2 DCs, Thiago Heleno from Palmeiras and Naldo, from União São João. I was expecting to see Thiago Heleno on the first-team, along with Saimon, while Werley would come now and then to rest them. Naldo was more of a backup. Until now, with Saimon injured, Naldo has been playing wonderfully, scoring goals and totally dominating in the air and in the tackling department. A good surprise:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/cAf3aqDwSkuqpJGT27EQ8kEXQlltQJYURE4h5yH1.png

Júlio César and Facundo Bertoglio had their loans extended, which is good because they're both important players on this team.

Gabriel was a promising kid being sold by a reasonable price, and I got the youngster Bruno Dybal on loan just to check him out, maybe I'll buy him. I'm having less trouble to find promising youngsters than I thought I would have.

Our midfield rising star, Fernando, has been sold to SL Benfica, for R$36m (I really don't know how much that is in euros. Maybe something like 13m), But he only departs in the middle of the year, so he's going to help us win the Copa Libertadores da América.

Our first game in Libertadores was both exciting and disappointing:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/02d6q5J4QGnSZ5p5KBjymSvROjGo8UhhX5f38116.png

I'm happy with the way the team reacted, specially because after we went to 10 players we kept attacking and applying pressure. Elano shouldn't have missed that penalty, though ):.

That's it

Really struggle to get to grips with the Brazil rules and the MLS for that matter, but I will follow this to see how you get on and hopfully learn along the way, good luck and great start

Thank you for the feedback, it's good to know someone is reading your story

I don't see how Brazil rules are any different than the ones in European countries. Our season starts at the beggining of the year (so instead of Season 2012/2013, 2013/2014 we have 2012, 2013, 2014...), the National First Division is pretty much like the EPL or Serie A, etc, the only difference is that we have the States Championships. For most states, they work as a pre-season for the biggest club on the state, and it's just a minor title. In the Gaúcho one, for example, the only teams from the First Division are Grêmio and Internacional. Juventude is from the Second and all others are Third and below. The only exception is São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro State Championship, since the first features Palmeiras, Corinthians, São Paulo, Santos and a lot of medium teams, and the second has Flamengo, Vasco, Botafogo and Fluminense.

I think it's probably tactical.

Of course it won't happen playing a smaller team. They don't have enough skill to score 5 goals at AC Milan. I think that what's probably happening is that you're too offensive (or maybe your tactic is just too inadequate to the match). They score too much at the beggining and then stop, but that's just normal. Teams tend to get accommodated after they build a good lead.

[I apologize for any grammar mistakes made below (:]

So, for my first career in Football Manager 2013, I decided to manage Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense, or simply Grêmio FBPA. The reasons for this were many: I managed Grêmio before in FM 2008 and 2009 (and were really happy with them) and they also happen to be the club I have the most simpathy, aside the one I cheer for, Palmeiras. Grêmio is a really traditional club in Brazil (just like 10 others from the top division), and they have amazing fans.

In earlier versions of FM, I always played in my brothers/friends PCs, so I never got farther than one or two seasons. I don't have experience in raising players or planning for the future, so that's something I'll have to worry about now. I plan on playing at least 5 seasons with Grêmio, with my goal being to win AT LEAST once the Brazilian League, Brazilian Cup, Copa Libertadores da America and the FIFA World Club Championship. Actually, I'd rather get at least one of these titles every year. Let's see how that goes.

So, onto my first season.

I wasn't really watching too much soccer this year (been really busy), so I didn't have a good idea of what Grêmio's squad would look like. And boy, that was a good surprise. Featuring Kléber (ex-Palmeiras) and Marcelo Moreno, two leading stars strikers, Elano and Zé Roberto, both experienced at the Brazilian National Team and good playmakers, a good duo of defenders (Saimon and Werley) and Júlio César on loan from Fluminense on the left wing, I knew that was a team destined for some good stuff. I loaned some strikers to get some depth in there, and Paulo Henrique and Nixon proved to be good surprises. Nixon wasn't good enough for Grêmio (even if he always scored) so I sent him back to Flamengo. I kept Paulo Henrique tho, he looks promising, and I kinda like the boy. I also find two good regens, for free:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/RcHZkwRjw7LwrmYCnEkxdRmMic2n0ZlR4OYAFZMv.png

Maylson should have been sold, but looking back, maybe I should have kept Marquinhos. He would have been a good sub for Elano and Zé Roberto.

Miguel Peinado, one of the regens:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/T0EezS89OHvzLJrERxytfPiqk2hAzJUCYVbzBqgl.png

Paulo Henrique:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/oYXvpXhTJwL7BIFEpslHoE6DjPnMHS9o22XHQ2xw.png

Santiago Vásquez (this sonofa... got an injury that last almost a year.):

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/RxnBep1YDNqnqrIxrnYtPFxMB4DMZBjubPDp0vNE.png

Highlight: I really can't believe Zé Roberto's stats at 39 years:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/4PX5ictPXRL9IRq5rxRl5W5wM08m4zHhvhyIHkvE.png

I also bought Danilo, but since he had played for other clubs, he wasn't allowed to play in the Brazilian League, just in the Cup. I was thinking in 2014 (also, I thought it was a bargain):

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/ko0SiBklKr9kJvjnLkLWyU3AZvqkXK1agZuNGSMX.png

Okay, so the first competition was the Gaúcho State Championship. It's not like Grêmio really has a competition here, the only contenders are Internacional, which we managed to beat. Despite a shaaaaaaameful loss to Lajeadense (who are these guys?) it was a good title win to start the season. States Championships don't have a lot of reputation, but the fans like them, so I was happy to win it.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/AcwNfvr6sxF01VpFonZgvy3v1OUWvQ0Xf2qlD1om.png

Not on chronological order, but we also won the Brazilian Cup, which I didn't expect. Beating Flamengo (spoiler: the League winners) at their own home was a pleasure, and I wasn't so confident against Bahia or Santos either. Played with the best team selection possible, and had a lot of comebacks (specially against Figueirense, on both matches, Flamengo Away and Santos Away). Better, impossible.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/Pbr87BfwBu9UYUtNOJVadZAm2RyO100osRDovVDh.png

And finally, the Brazilian National First Division. I told the board that I expected to qualify to Copa Libertadores da América (the 4 first places, unless one of them wins the Cup, then the 5th also qualifies), and I thought that was all I could do, barely. Instead, we mounted a serious title challenge. I am pretty convinced that our biggest problem were injuries. In crucial times we had key players on the medical department. Anyway, I'm pretty happy with the result:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/hHRiqzBeRpbzzdIXn3TIprXSlgeR3pBS7VAmGHad.jpg

A game that deserves a highlight (against our rivals, away from home... even though they got relegated, International squad is pretty good. i don't understand how their coach managed that.):

Ok, I always heard passing and tempo are linked. Short passing works better with lower tempo, direct passing works better with higher tempo. But really, is it impossible to make the opposite work? Really technical teams are able to exchange short passes at a high tempo, confusing the defenders. Does it work on the ME? Should I try?

Maybe training att. set pieces helps it. I'm in 2014 and had 2 goals from DFK, both from the same guy, in very close matches. Just bought him. Maybe he won't keep scoring, but who knows. Also, I didn't see any in 2013.

Not sure If I should say YES! or "Nooooooooooooo." Probably no. 10 players on the field, got a penalty and Elano missed. Bloody bastard.

Edit: on a side note: how does Werley scores an o.g., gets expelled and still is rated 6.9? lol.

But this one, away from home and against my rivals was DEFINITELY a "YES!"

Hi y'all!

I don't know how much interest you guys have in Brazilian football around here, so I'm starting this thread to find out. I'm brazilian, and a Palmeiras fan (don't know how many of you guys know but we got relegated this year ): ) anyway I plan to update this topic with matches, transfers, etc. Still a long way to the national championship (starts only around may, ends in december), but we have the states championships in february.

Also, Corinthians is playing Chelsea on Sunday. (and I hope they lose).

Remember 2008? I think I got over 40 goals with a striker with near post flick-on.

This kind of thing happens in every FM. Eventually it gets fixed. I still don't see it as a problem here, though (but I noticed a lot of goals from crosses.)

I really disagree with that.

I've been playing for a short time (almost an entire season for now) and I took a team that was predicted to finish in 10-12th place to a title challenge, Second place, 2 points behind the first, 7 or 8 matches to go. Also, I won the state championship. (I'm playing in Brazil, with Grêmio). And I can really see when my actions have consequences on the field. I've been playing a kinda tweaked 4-4-2 (really works on the counter attack, away from home, against teams that are either stronger or a bit favourite, since they bring the game to me and get counter-attacked. Got some terrible upsets against weaker teams away from home tho), a very attacking 4-3-3 (most matches at home and sometimes weaker teams away) and still looking for a better third tactic (been thinking of a flat 3-5-2, dominating possession and 3 DCs help against through balls in the counter attack, avoiding upsets away from home)...

I haven't played the 2012 version, and played just a bit of the 2011. However, I played a lot of the 2008, 2009 and 2010 FM, and I'm finding 2013 incredibly fun.

That's it.

Interested to know why you opted for 2 DM's rather than playing those same roles but as CM's?

I play 4-3-3 with 1 DM and 2 CMs, and the defense isn't that solid, especially against better or similar teams away from home. Playing 4-3-3 with 2 CMs and 1 AM is kinda suicidal, I think. At least If you're playing with 3 Strikers, I don't know if he's calling 4-3-3 a tactic with 2 wingers (haven't opened the file). In that case it's possible, but still, far from ideal to defend.

There are a number of things you can do to aid a youngsters development;

- Assign a mentor, Preferably a experienced and influential player who plays in the same position.
- Make sure you have a relevant training regime set up up for them. Don't trust your assistants advice in backroom meetings as they tend to want to train players in things that are inappropriate to their position.
-Send them out on loan to smaller teams. Playing a division or two down will give them first team experience in a league that's not so tough. Their ability's should shine among the less talented players. Giving both the reputation and confidence a boost.
- Most importantly, Be patient! Of course you should give them some time in your first team, but integrate them slowly, Just bring them on as substitutes in games where the result looks to be wrapped up at first, This avoids lumping pressure onto them, Then give them their first starts against smaller clubs in cup games.

Okay Rick, I'll try all that and tell you how it goes!

Hi people!

I'm new to the forums, but I've been playing FM since the 2008 version. Never been a greeat player (almost always playing on vacation, at friend's houses.), but I do understand a bit of how the game works. This year, for the first time since 2008 I bought the game for myself, so I'm going to have a lot more time to play and hopefully that will bring careers that last longer than 2 or 3 years, which brings me to an aspect of the game that I never really understood or paid much attention to: Player Development.

First: is there a comprehensible guide to it?
Second: How does it work, exactly? I mean, I always had promising youngsters, "hot prospects" that looked to gain attributes in such a slow fashion, or even sometimes lose attributes. Even when I was playing on teams that have top quality or state-of-the-art training facilities, so I really don't know I'm doing wrong. The "focus training" doesn't seem to work much. I also know (or at least guess) that the youngster must have some kind of first-team experience to boost his development. Well, overall, I guess I never really see them developing at all.

Is it just because I have played such a little time? (Most of my games don't last longer than 2 years, but that'll change.).

Thank you very much in advance!
