I've seen a lot of 3D kits here on the forum and I thought why don't we have something that can convert those into 2D kits? Well, you can find the answer below. In 2020 I started with the 3D to 2D standard kit conversion template for Photoshop, whereby you copy and paste elements from the kit into smart objects that are warped into the right place. For FM22, I've made more improvements to the standard kit and also added support for 3D to SS kit style conversion!

We also use a script that uses your config.xml and transforms that into an output directory with the kits of your choice! @DokteurHaisse did an amazing job creating a Photoshop JSX script, that automatically generates the 2D minikits from an input file (config.xml) of your 3D kits directory. Together, we made it a bit more user friendly (also for macOS users).

There are two tutorials included in the zip, both for the script as for adding the kit manually to the template.

Running into any issues with the download or do you want to perfect this project? Let me know!

Drop you creations below, I'm curious to see what you all made!

Very nice catch @Svartowiz! I’ll look into it today and will upload a new version as soon as all bugs are fixed. I also noticed that there is some sort of outer white line during export so I’m also looking into that

v7 (29/12/2020) - Big update fixing a lot of issues! Some rework has been done to the shirt and arms smart objects. For example the shirt and left arm did not align correctly (thanks @Svartowiz) and the right chest/shoulder has been reworked. The kit colors are restored, meaning less desaturation. Furthermore, the script is extended and now adds an inner stroke of 1px on 0% opacity to the kit, resulting in no white outline in the exported PNG. This is especially noticeable on dark kits.

Not really, would not make sense either. You have to create a 3D kit first before you can convert it to 2D > however that leads to consistency between 3D and 2D and consistency between all 2D kits you create (via conversion). The other way around you'd miss out on for example socks, shorts and the back side of the shirt.

I can only suggest and promote you start with using Photoshop, even if its just the demo/trial version. Besides that you create something, it's a pretty cool skill to have also in your work life (for example you can create images to promote a product/event of your small company or design your curriculum vitae).

@wesfm18 do you think that this creation process can be made even for FM18-19 3D kits using their respective FM18-19 2D standard model?
FM 2019 standard 2D kit uses a different model (with inverted sleeves position on 3D kits if I remember correctly), but it has the same size of FM 20-21 2D standard kit (both are 256x256 px).

Yes that would be possible. It's just updating the smart layers (or creating new ones) within the PSD template. I don't know if there is much need for it right now, not planning on creating that (yet).

Obviously, no rush at all. It's perfectly right to focus on the newest game.
It's just an idea given the similar size of 2D and 3D kits of these games.

Yes, definitely. Could you export the 2D kit overlay and some real kits (both 3d and 2d) for me and send it via PM? Use the Resource Archiver for the graphics.fmf that's in your game folder. I don't have the old FMs installed at the moment. I maybe take a look at it but don't expect it soon 🙂

Hi @trueskyblue87, I did some research and I found out that your Photoshop version does probably not work with the template. In the template there is a smart object which I warped to match the slope of the kits of SI. In your case, there is no warping of those layers, meaning the collar is very low (basically all over the place) and I get very different results within my exports.

If you want to convert any kits I suggest upgrading your Photoshop or ask me in PM and I'll convert them for you 🙂

Thanks for the template mate, very helpful.

I realised that I'm using Photoshop CS6, which is probably why the warping of the smart object isn't working as it's meant to. Do you think this is possible to resolve? Happy to put in a bit more work this end if needed.

I don't think I can solve that issue, otherwise I would have done it already 🙂 The warping does not apply to the smart layers on older versions of Photoshop, so to be able to use it to its potential I can only suggest to upgrade.

Really fantastic work @wesfm18!! Many thanks, those kits are the best styles ever I've seen on FM!

Could you please try to do the 3 Padova (Italian Serie C) kits in standard style? I've attached the 3d kits for home and away (third was not available), useful logos in png transparent format and 3 pics of the kits that could help you with the design (they're sketches from Macron). Thanks in advance!

EDIT: if you could keep the logo with the original colors (red/white) on the third, that would be great!

Requests please here. I might look into your kit when I have time available 🙂

The shirt is standard Nike teamwear (Park VII), just with a stripe printed on and Viterbese's Lion logo in the bottom corner, so it should be easy enough

Created the following kits using your script

Seems like there's an issue with the collar, it's always a round collar. Is that an issue from the 3d kit or your tool only produces round collar kits?

Otherwise than that it worked perfectly, I'm looking into modifying the 3d kits to make the standard look better.

Thanks

Look up some V-collar official kits of SI. They are always rounded collars. It’s not ideal I’d say but it’s fully consistent with SI.

In terms of improving the 3D, that mostly involves sponsor/logo placement, same in this case.

Ok I see, thanks.

I also noticed that there a symmetry issue: took my kits and the Inter kit you provided as an example. Is this a known issue (or not even an issue)?

Good feedback! I did not think about creating symmetry in the parts copied from the original, however I mapped the Inter kit over the original one. It seems the original SI kits show a bit more on one side compared to the other side.

What I did was warping the copied part so it fits over the 2D one. I might one day work on an updated version, that takes symmetry into account. I’d love to use the 3D model to some extent, since that is 100% correct but requires rework to be able to be mapped I think. @DokteurHaisse, what is your view on this, also in terms of creating this as a tool or integrating this into the viewer?

The 3d model (used by the match engine) is kind of low-poly and overall not close enough to the standard 2d kits, I tried to use it as a base to generate 2d kits but the result is not that great imo, I get something like that :

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/VaOumn9rYL2KIHyFYTJRPGnLyjPlW8J9ZRpO2Job.png

which has obviously nothing to do with the standard kit :

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/fzkYEZ7tSV4zQgBN9AwlPqOcmRNpy1cpU3SVq4Fd.png

The best thing to do would be to create our own 3d model dedicated to this thing (which would map the textures exactly the same way), but it seems very tricky and I'm absolutely clueless around any kind of 3d modeling software :p

Right now I'm focusing on developing a tool to automate this rendering from the 3d kits by using a 3d model, as for the model itself I guess I'll have to worry about it at some point ^^

Yes I expected that exactly. I was thinking maybe we could rework the 3D file so that it maps the kit from a certain angle and then export without shadows and add the overlay on top. I've worked with Blender like 10 years ago creating player faces for FIFA, but that is a different story compared to this 🙂

What model did you extract and use for your 3D Kits viewer? High or medium?
Maybe the low poly quality depends on the model extracted in the event that you used the medium quality model.
I'm just guessing.
