I suppose he can't be any worse than this wretched season... famous last words?

In some ways, I think the expectations have ramped up to high after the 5th place finish (with the majority of fans, not necessarily the guys on here). We overperformed that season and underperformed this season.

Then again the majority of fans expected better than 16th. Surely that is reasonable expectation given the squad at our disposal, even despite all the injuries.
Pippadoc
But in some ways things went our way for most of last season, and things didn't go our way for the most part this season. We won a lot of games with Cisse scoring world class goals last season - and unsuprisingly he hasn't managed to repeat that this season.
Obviously, it's not all luck and we have played badly for a lot of this season.

Loads of fans Newcastle would criticise Chelsea for sacking Di Matteo soon after winning the CL. Yet call for Pardew's sacking less than a year after winning two manager of the year awards. I think he's definitely got enough credit for another few months to fix things.
Also any criticism than mentions fifth place is totally unfair, that's punishing Pardew for overachieving.

He played 36 league games - one missed because of Tiote being a nob against Sunderland and getting a red, and one because FIFA upheld a complaint from Senegal and banned him from a game. I think.
I don't think it helped him that Pardew kept playing him out wide. For instance, away at QPR, he was wide left. He'd also been wide right a lot of the time. Surely you'd actually play wide-men in that role?

I don't think expecting us to finish between 6th-12th is an unreasonable expectation. On paper our team is on the same level as Swansea/West Brom, who have finished in these areas. And we're not far off the likes of Liverpool and Everton.

But then, as has already been discussed ad nauseum, a lot of players have looked shadows of their selves from the previous season.

Surely one of the more pointless season review DVDs.

Earlier in the year, Pardew said he would be interested in taking Carroll back.
A couple of weeks ago I think Llambias came out and said that we wouldn't be interested - but I suppose that could be due to how much we're willing to spend.

It was a great season in Europe, but in England we were routinely awful.

I don't know what to expect this summer tbh. We clearly need at least 4-6 players (maybe more depending on departures) but how likely Ashley will be to part with his cash is debatable.

If we can get £20M+ for him and buy three good strikers then we're laughing. But I daresay that might be too much to ask for, not least given Pardew's tactics means whoever comes in will wind up on the left wing.

What a player.

It's amazing how Everton compensated for the collapse of this South Africa tournament by getting into a tournament with Real Madrid in the USA, and we look set for games with Motherwell, Rangers and Blackpool.

There's just one question - have they gone mad?

The BBC have just confirmed it.

But why on earth he's been bought back, and to a fairly pointless role that Dennis Wise handled exceptionally poorly, is a mystery. It's fucking stupid.

This is not going to have a happy ending.

We looked decent a year ago.
