Perhaps it might be the Gamma of your computer monitor which "clips" very dark colours, so for example #000000 and #101010 appear very similar/identical? My previous laptop had terrible gamma so black colours appeared too bright or as a dark grey (noticeable while watching Game of Thrones or other TV shows/movies with a dark colour palette!)

I'm not on my own PC right now and the monitor I'm using is quite old, so that could possibly be the case. I'll save your post and have a look at it tomorrow when I'm at my place

Levels and curves are far more superior than brightness and contrast.Once I learnt about it never looked back.
