I knew he was there but didn't know it was that high a role - I thought it was honorary board member or some bollocks like that.

Still going down though.

Terry's past it - his last league start was at Newcastle, where he was their worst defender, and same again today.

Who would you guys bring in if you were managing Sunderland? I'm struggling to think of an available manager who is better than O'Neill.

Bookies favourites are Mark Hughes and Steve McClaren. Neither one would be a particularly inspiring appointment.

Obviously when people are saying North Korea's military capabilities are exaggerated, you want people to see the mightiest ship in your army...

To be serious, the question is of how much of their capabilities is fact. There's no way that they could successfully hit Hawaii, nevermind mainland America, with any missile they currently have, no matter how much they say they can. All really depends on whether or not South Korea and China decide they've tired of the NK rhetoric.

Yeah, you could tell you were down to bare bones. I just think Krul and Tiote left the biggest gaps. There's no way Krul would have conceded Yaya's goal, for instance, and Tiote would have provided an actual barrier in central midfield.

I didn't even notice Jonas was playing until the 41st minute.

I just thought the scoreline flattered us a bit.

I'm not sure it's that as Elliott did pull off a lot of good saves. We can't say Tiote would've helped either as he has looked poor all season. But we're desperate enough to be playing Simpson and Obertan, and both of them were thoroughly awful. We should've tried the attack tactics we did against MUFC, which caught them by surprise until the end, but I think we're saving something for a chance at EL semis and/or the biggest fish v Fulham and Sunderland. Talking of which...

If there was a suitable time to get rid of O'Neill, it was not now. It was ages ago, when they still had the security of a cushion above the drop zone and time to make a reasonable informed decision. Seven to go is not an advised time to make such an important change, especially given their situation and brutal fixture list.

If the new guy fields a team that duly tanks in the Derby in 2 weeks, they're fucked.

Just as I say that Wigan score... we're being reeled into the bottom battle again. If we don't beat Fulham we're in big big trouble.

He's not behaved like Dalglish did during the Suarez racism scandal but Martinez's behaviour has been absurd to the point of disrespectful. Surely an apology is at least the basic we can get.

Sunderland have lost Fletcher and Cattermole for the rest of the season. I get the feeling they're going down - not deluded Mag talk as they do seem in deep shit at the moment.

Relegated the next season?

Shearer would probably be hailed as Newcastle's managerial Messiah, only for him to display his true 'ability' as a manager and get you guys relegated anyway.

I reckon we may have stayed in the Prem in 09/10 but we'd probably be down there and there's no way we'd have wound up with a team anywhere near being capable of last season's performances.

At the least we would have been lumped with Owen on an extended contract at still-stupid wages, despite him being pretty useless for the half of 08/09 he was actually needed. I mean, £120K a week is more than most League One clubs wage bills. In the Championship a player on such a pay packet would be financial suicide.

There are times I do wonder what would have happened if, in 2009, someone, anyone, got a goal that would've kept us in the Premier League. Where would the Toon be now?

Like McManaman gives a shit about the antics of a pub team. Even if the calling the fans involved 'idiotic' would be an insult to idiots. That whole game is just one bastion of unpleasantness that nobody except possibly Haidara comes out of with any credit.

Fucking mess all round.

awful decision, but it is in no way Wigans fault that they got away with it

I think we can all accept the fact that Wigan did not tell McManaman to go out and fuck up one of our players but their attitude, both from top brass and supporters, has been extremely unprofessional.

The only difference it makes is that if he meant to do is that he'd know what to target rather than unintentionally hitting it, but if you're careering straight at the player like he was that's inevitable. There's no way you could stop such a mindless challenge from hitting a player when his leg is right in front, and the red card should have been shown for such a moronic judgement.

Neither player nor Wigan have apologised. It's the very least they could do and it's pretty amazing to not even be afforded that courtesy.

I guess that means Simpson and Gutierrez or Perch at fullback

There's been calls from some fans that Gutierrez should be at full back with Santon in a winger slot as they seem to do better and given Santon has been continually caught out in recent fixtures it can't do any harm. But it is hardly helpful we have lost all our players, especially in such awful circumstances as last Sunday's match.

This is just an incomprehensible decision.

He should have been sent off at the time and the fact they have not punished him, both with a lino looking the other way and now this, is ballsy. We should add the FA to the lawsuit for gross incompetence and failing to protect players. I didn't think it as a good idea at first but if the FA are going to be this incompetent then why the fuck shouldn't we?

It pisses me off a bit that players spend half the game trying to cheat the referee, conning him into giving cards, diving and begging for corners and throw ins they know aren't and then on the other hand spend the other half getting outraged that the referee has got a decision wrong.

When you have a culture that encourages cheating, as it does in football, referees jobs are needlessly more difficult than they should be.

Also Martinez is a cock. Lot of respect lost for him for trying to defend McManaman.

Aye Martinez's post-match just made him look like a cunt.

In terms of the culture of cheating, it doesn't help. But it doesn't excuse anyone when a bona fide red card by anyone's standards is missed. There's an ex-ref on Sky saying the linesman is too far away to see it properly but that is fucking bollocks - he flies in and makes contact, and that is a poor challenge from the angle the camera was at. Plus it didn't stop the linesman in our game at Liverpool, who was a similar distance, flagging like mad when Coloccini went in on Suarez.
