NOTE: It is worth doing this if you regularly download faces/logos/skins/etc as the game often "forgets" your manager number. This way (Within that saved game) it will always be there.
1) In-game, go to prefs, display & sound, select "show unique IDs", untick "use skin cache" & tick "always reload on confirm".
Wait while it sorts itself out, then go to your manager info and you'll see a long number underneath you name something like...139456789123....make a note of this number.
2) Save your chosen picture of you as this ID (making sure it's a .png file) into the following folder:
my documents/sports interactive/fm2013/graphics/faces/me
(You may need to create the last 3 folders - either File>Create New folder or left mouse click)
3) Next you need to create a config file (the file that links the game to the image) and put it in the folder "me" with your picture.
You can download fmXML (or THIS mac version) or FM Gfx Configurator - All of which will do it automatically for you or create one yourself using this template I've created for you HERE (simply open in a Text Editor and change the TWO bits that say "change me" to your ID number you got earlier) Save it with a ".xml" extension.
4) Go back to your game prefs and untick "Show unique IDs" click confirm and hey presto your picture should be there.
Second Method:
There's also an alternate way to ensure that your manager picture does not get 'lost' by the game. This way as long as you use the SAME MANAGER PROFILE & DATE OF BIRTH, it should work across multiple games.
1) Create a folder in Documents\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2011\graphics\players and name it managers (or anything you want to, the actual name's not important). Put your manager picture in there.
Then open notepad and paste the following:
This will assign any picture named me.png in this folder to any person named John Smith born on 20th December; the year is irrelevant. You can change the file name, the name and the day and month of birth within the above code to apply to your in-game manager. This works for saved games as well.
When you're done and come to save the file, you'll need to save not as a text document but as all files with the filename being config.xml
Hope this is clear and not too technical.

Can't believe despite checking the UID number a dozen times I still got it wrong. It works fine now. Thanks for the solution!
