Update 009: February 2020
January ended on a positive, as we came out victorious in three straight fixtures in league and cup; which was a major improvement on our end to 2019, with that seven match winless streak. February would prove to be a massive month in 2019/20, as we played three of the last four Premier Intermediate League fixtures which included a huge encounter with promotion rivals Tobermore United. They'd also be a Irish Cup sixth round meeting with Cliftonville.
Here's how it all went:
Match Round-Up:
Result One:
Competition: Premier Intermediate League | Round: 17/20 | Opponent: Newington (NIR/III) | Their Position: 11/11 | Their Streak: LLWLW
Our Highest Rated Player: Johnny McCaw (NIR) - 8.3 | Our Position: 2/11 | Our Points Tally: 29pts | Our Streak: LDWWW
"Nervy match-up with bottom of the table Newington, partly due to the fact that they had beat Tobermore United at Seaview just a few matchdays ago. They almost gained the points over us too after Conal Burns put them ahead on 13mins, but thankfully goals from Johnny McCaw and Nick Beta (89th min!) snatched us the win. Crucial, but fortunate, three points."
Result Two:
Competition: Irish Cup | Round: Sixth | Opponent: Cliftonville (NIR/I) | Their Position: - | Their Streak: WDWWW
Our Highest Rated Player: Timmy Clarke (NIR) - 7.1 | Our Position: - | Our Points Tally: - | Our Streak: DWWWL
"Gutting defeat to Premiership side Cliftonville in the Irish Cup sixth round, as Aaron Donnelly scored on 90mins to secure his side a place in the next round. So close to knocking out a big gun. They merited their victory, but we dug in tremendously and deserved extra time. Harsh way to exit the competition."
Result Three:
Competition: Premier Intermediate League | Round: 18/20 | Opponent: Tobermore United (NIR/III) | Their Position: 3/11 | Their Streak: LWLLW
Our Highest Rated Player: Dale McCreery (NIR) - 6.8 | Our Position: 3/11 | Our Points Tally: 29pts | Our Streak: WWWLL
"Ffs. Bottled it. What an opportunity to stake a massive claim for a top two finish, instead we lost - thanks to a silly own-goal from Stuart Moore - and handed over momentum to Tobermore United. Shocking performance."
Result Four:
Competition: Friendly | Round: - | Opponent: East Belfast (NIR/IV) | Their Position: - | Their Streak: -
Our Highest Rated Player: James Wright (NIR) & Johnny McCaw (NIR) - 8.3 | Our Position: - | Our Points Tally: - | Our Streak: -
"A free week, strangely the first of many to come next month and beyond, means a friendly match was scheduled - versus East Belfast of the fourth tier. We got a win, despite making hard work of it, after strikes from James Wright and Johnny McCaw."
Result Five:
Competition: Premier Intermediate League | Round: 19/20 | Opponent: Annagh United (NIR/III) | Their Position: 6/11 | Their Streak: WWLLL
Our Highest Rated Player: Josh Doyle (NIR) - 6.9 | Our Position: 3/11 | Our Points Tally: 30pts | Our Streak: WWLLD
"Deary me. Do we even want promotion? Lacklustre tie with mid-table Annagh United, which would've seen our season over there and then if not for Bangor's defeat away to Moyola Park. The title is now officially out of reach, but a promotion play-off place is still available - but only just."
Overview:
That table, given our messy form, makes for frustrating reading. Wins over Tobermore United and Annagh United would've seen us top of the standings, but instead we sit 3rd with just one fixture left to fulfil. 1st is between Tobermore and Bangor, who actually meet each other on the final day of the season - which is *checks notes* over a month away...
When it does arrive, it'll be a nail-biting final day. We will host 9th place Armagh City whilst the other two face-off. We sit 3pts behind Bangor and they hold a +5 goal difference (and +5 goals scored - the secondary deciding factor), so we will need ourselves to be on top form and/or help from Tobermore; who are going for the title, so won't (shouldn't) go easy on Bangor. I'm not confident, whatsoever. I just hope we do our bit, placing outside the top three would be a disgrace - to be frank.

Update 008: January 2020
We welcomed in 2020 with just four fixtures, three of which in the Premier Intermediate League and one in the Irish Cup. Our form has been hideous lately, as we went the whole month of December without an official victory; and hadn't scored in the latter two encounters. Would our form improve?
Match Round-Up:
Result One:
Competition: Premier Intermediate League | Round: 14/20 | Opponent: Dollingstown (NIR/III) | Their Position: 9/11 | Their Streak: WWLDW
Our Highest Rated Player: Josh Doyle (NIR) & Stuart Moore (NIR) - 6.8 | Our Position: 3/11 | Our Points Tally: 20pts | Our Streak: DLDDL
"Not a great start to the new year. Shoddy defeat at home to Dollingstown, Andrew Hamilton won it for them after netting a penalty on 8mins. Really, really dreadful."
Result Two:
Competition: Irish Cup | Round: Fifth | Opponent: Dollingstown (NIR/III) | Their Position: - | Their Streak: WLDWW
Our Highest Rated Player: Barry Moore (NIR) & Dale McCreery - 7.3 | Our Position: - | Our Points Tally: - | Our Streak: LDDLD
"Another meeting with Dollingstown, this time in the Irish Cup fifth round. Just like in round four versus Banbridge Town, we managed to advance after winning the penalty shoot-out. It was a second straight poor performance, but our second straight victory on spot-kicks this season. Despite the bad form, we find ourselves in the Irish Cup sixth round - where we'll host Premiership outfit Cliftonville."
Result Three:
Competition: Premier Intermediate League | Round: 15/20 | Opponent: Moyola Park (NIR/III) | Their Position: 8/11 | Their Streak: DLWWL
Our Highest Rated Player: Nick Beta (NIR) - 8.3 | Our Position: 3/11 | Our Points Tally: 23pts | Our Streak: DDLDW
"Three points! An actual win achieved! Amongst a flurry of tactical tweaks this month, one finally produced the goods as we defeated mid-table Moyola Park following goals from Kevin Braniff, Daire Rooney and Nick Beta. Our opponents did get one back, but we held on; despite losing two key players to injury. We also missed a penalty."
Result Four:
Competition: Premier Intermediate League | Round: 16/20 | Opponent: Portstewart (NIR/III) | Their Position: 5/11 | Their Streak: LWLLW
Our Highest Rated Player: Michael O'Hanlon (NIR) & Nick Beta (NIR) - 7.2 | Our Position: 2/11 | Our Points Tally: 26pts | Our Streak: DLDWW
"Have we turned a corner? Back-to-back wins out of nowhere, Nick Beta and Kevin Braniff scoring here for a 2-0 win away to Portstewart. This result actually takes us into 2nd, after Tobermore United shockingly lost away to Newington."
Overview:
We head into February in 2nd, which I don't quite know how we've managed to be honest... those two victories were massive. Hopes tempered slightly, given Bangor (3pts ahead) and Tobermore United (level on pts) have games in hand; as do Annagh United down in 4th. We can only do our job though, just four matches left to play - three in February then, rather strangely, the final fixture isn't played until April...

Update 007: December 2019
2019 drew to a close in this update, as I took charge of my sixth month in charge of Lisburn Distillery in Northern Ireland's Premier Intermediate League. Coming up were four league fixtures and one cup tie, as our Irish Cup run began in the fourth round against domestic rivals Banbridge Town; who we'd face again in the league just seven days later.
Match Round-Up:
Result One:
Competition: Premier Intermediate League | Round: 10/20 | Opponent: Armagh City (NIR/III) | Their Position: 9/11 | Their Streak: DWLWL
Our Highest Rated Player: Nick Beta (NIR) - 7.1 | Our Position: 3/11 | Our Points Tally: 18pts | Our Streak: DWLDL
"Bad day at the office in Armagh, as we were easily beaten by the City club after goals from George Brown and Conor Hagan. As you can see, it was all rather self-inflicted as were down to nine men after just 58mins, following Daire Rooney and Stuart Moore both picking up straight red cards. We initially took the lead, too.. all the more frustrating!"
Result Two:
Competition: Irish Cup | Round: Fourth | Opponent: Banbridge Town (NIR/III) | Their Position: - | Their Streak: WWWLL
Our Highest Rated Player: Gary Workman (NIR) - 8.5 | Our Position: - | Our Points Tally: - | Our Streak: WLDLD
"Another eventful encounter followed on 7 December, as we played a four-goal thriller with Banbridge Town in the Irish Cup fourth round. We took the lead twice, only to be pegged back by our opponents on both occasions. Extra time couldn't separate us, so a penalty shoot-out was played - which we surprisingly won 6-5. This match had a remarkable 52 total shots, 24 of which were on target."
Result Three:
Competition: Premier Intermediate League | Round: 11/20 | Opponent: Banbridge Town (NIR/III) | Their Position: 9/11 | Their Streak: WWLLD
Our Highest Rated Player: Josh Doyle (NIR) & Nick Beta (NIR) - 6.7 | Our Position: 3/11 | Our Points Tally: 18pts | Our Streak: LDLDL
"No trip home required, as we visited Banbridge Town's Crystal Park for the second time in a week; this time in league action. We lost 3-1 here, rather routinely given we were 3-0 down after 31mins. Kevin Braniff converted a late spot-kick, but it was little consolation."
Result Four:
Competition: Premier Intermediate League | Round: 12/20 | Opponent: Limavady United (NIR/III) | Their Position: 4/11 | Their Streak: WWWWW
Our Highest Rated Player: Stuart Moore (NIR) - 8.1 | Our Position: 3/11 | Our Points Tally: 19pts | Our Streak: DLDLD
"Five competitive matches without victory, no league win in four encounters. So, the last thing we wanted was fixtures with Limavady United (4th) and Bangor (1st). I had changed tactic last time out against Banbridge, which evidently wasn't a success, so decided to mix things up once more with a 4-1-4-1 in the hope of becoming tighter defensively. It done the trick away to Limavady United, as we secured a point after a goalless draw to remain in third place."
Result Five:
Competition: Premier Intermediate League | Round: 13/20 | Opponent: Bangor (NIR/III) | Their Position: 1/11 | Their Streak: WLWWW
Our Highest Rated Player: Stuart Moore (NIR) - 7.0 | Our Position: 3/11 | Our Points Tally: 20pts | Our Streak: LDLDD
"The new tactic also got us a point at home to league leaders Bangor. It does mean no victory in seven games for us now, but I'll take these two points given how shocking we've been. It also ends our losing streak to @Shedender's lot. "
Overview:
Bit rough, that. A winless (penalties officially count as a draw, of course) month puts a dent in our aspirations. Bangor are now 8pts ahead of us now, though Tobermore United in the play-off spot remain in sight by 3pts. Just seven Premier Intermediate League matches to play now, it really is Bangor's to lose at this point given their five point lead on Tobermore.
In terms of cup football: We only remain in the Irish Cup, with Dollingstown awaiting following our scrape past Banbridge Town. That's a winnable tie, if we can get our crap together.
Current Tactics:
Other:
Paul Young has left us. The 37-year-old winger wasn't being used, started complaining so I gave him a free transfer. No biggie.

Update 006: November 2019
November would be a little light on action, with just two competitive matches to be played towards the end of the month; meaning we had to schedule three friendlies between the 1-16 November. I decided to face lower league outfits in Ford, Shorts and Saintfield United on home turf, they would serve as preparation for upcoming Intermediate Cup second round tie away to Bangor and our matchday nine fixture in the Premier Intermediate League at home to Annagh United.
Match Round-Up:
Result One:
Competition: Friendly | Round: - | Opponent: Ford (NIR/VIII) | Their Position: - | Their Streak: -
Our Highest Rated Player: Nick Beta (NIR) - 8.8 | Our Position: - | Our Points Tally: - | Our Streak: -
"Easy 4-1 win over Ford in the first mid-season friendly, Nick Beta starring after netting two goals."
Result Two:
Competition: Friendly | Round: - | Opponent: Shorts (NIR/VII) | Their Position: - | Their Streak: -
Our Highest Rated Player: Nick Beta (NIR) & Mikey Withers (NIR) - 8.8 | Our Position: - | Our Points Tally: - | Our Streak: -
"4-1 FC? Same scoreline over Shorts, with Nick Beta again notching a brace. Not quite as dominant here, pretty disappointing to concede sloppily late on in both of these two encounters."
Result Three:
Competition: Friendly | Round: - | Opponent: Saintfield United (NIR/VII) | Their Position: - | Their Streak: -
Our Highest Rated Player: Michael O'Hanlon (NIR) - 9.0 | Our Position: - | Our Points Tally: - | Our Streak: -
"Almost a third straight 4-1 victory... just 3-1 on this occasion. Pretty much the same formula as the previous two though, given we raced into a multi-goal lead before letting our opponents score too easily later on. No Nick Beta double here, but Michael O'Hanlon did so instead."
Result Four:
Competition: Intermediate Cup | Round: Second | Opponent: Bangor (NIR/III) | Their Position: - | Their Streak: LWDWW
Our Highest Rated Player: Gary Workman (NIR) - 7.0 | Our Position: - | Our Points Tally: - | Our Streak: LLDWL
"Heavy defeat away to Bangor. We got unlucky in this cup draw, getting the new league leaders (they overtook us by winning their game in hand, Tobermore United thankfully lost theirs) in the second round of the Intermediate Cup. 4-1 flatters them tremendously, just like their victory over us in league action did back in August. We had same amount of shots on target, but they scored with every highlight. Bangor are becoming a bit of a menace."
Result Five:
Competition: Premier Intermediate League | Round: 9/20 | Opponent: Annagh United (NIR/III) | Their Position: 7/11 | Their Streak: DDWWD
Our Highest Rated Player: three players - 6.8 | Our Position: 3/11 | Our Points Tally: 18pts | Our Streak: LDWLD
"Back to the bread and butter, we were frustratingly held to a goalless draw at home to Annagh United. Terrible performance, no two ways about it. We've now dropped to 3rd, three points off leaders Bangor."
Overview:
Last month's form looked worse than it was, probably the opposite this month. Just the two competitive matches but neither produced a good performance, as we dropped out of the Intermediate Cup and dropped to 3rd in the Premier Intermediate League. Massive pick-up needed in December!
Current Tactics:
Other:
More transfer news. Connor Curry, an unused right-back who had been moaning for a few months, has been released from his non-contract terms, while central midfielder Steven Ferguson has joined the club. We needed depth in his area, so I signed the 36-year old ex-Leeds United academy player on a free transfer - he has experience in the Premiership and Championship of Northern Ireland.
In other news, Neil Jackson has come on board as our new Under-18s coach. Chairman Jim Greer took control of that, I'd usually do everything myself but so far with Lisburn Distillery I've shared responsibility - admittedly unintentionally, I only just realised I wasn't doing press conferences.

Update 005: October 2019
Cup football would take centre stage this month, as we were given three games across three different competitions to supplement our usual Premier Intermediate League commitments. October would be a big'un as we met Portadown (Championship) and Larne (Premiership, 2nd) in the League Cup and County Antrim Shield respectively, whilst also meeting the early league leaders in Tobermore United (away).
Crucial month even this early on, here's how we at Lisburn Distillery got on:
Match Round-Up:
Result One:
Competition: Premier Intermediate League | Round: 7/20 | Opponent: Newington (NIR/III) | Their Position: 11/11 | Their Streak: LLWDW
Our Highest Rated Player: Gary Workman (NIR) - 9.2 | Our Position: 1/11 | Our Points Tally: 16pts | Our Streak: WWWDW
"Dominant scoreline archived over bottom of the table Newington, but it was one that flattered us in truth. A deserved win no doubt, but 5-1 was harsh on our guests after we netted four times inside the final twelve minutes through Gary Workman, Paul Young, James Wright and Daire Rooney. Notably, this result took us top of the table on goal difference after Tobermore United drew with Annagh United - some very important late goals."
Result Two:
Competition: League Cup | Round: Third | Opponent: Portadown (NIR/II) | Their Position: - | Their Streak: WWWLW
Our Highest Rated Player: Daire Rooney (NIR) - 7.2 | Our Position: - | Our Points Tally: - | Our Streak: WWDWL
"Having eliminated Crusaders of the Premiership in the second round, we were drawn with Championship outfit Portadown in round three. That is where our League Cup journey would end, as Shane McGinty netted with one minute remaining to condemn us to defeat. I'm proud of the boys though, we gave them a right good test - unlucky to lose after equalising five minutes prior via Daire Rooney."
Result Three:
Competition: County Antrim Shield | Round: Quarter-final | Opponent: Larne (NIR/I) | Their Position: - | Their Streak: DWWWW
Our Highest Rated Player: Kevin Braniff (NIR) - 8.8 | Our Position: - | Our Points Tally: - | Our Streak: WDWLL
"Consecutive losses for the first time as Lisburn Distillery manager. Larne, who sat 2nd in the Premiership, knocked us out of the County Antrim Shield after winning 3-2. Again though, I'm more than happy with my team. We gave the then second best club in the country a big test, to only narrowly lose by one goal away from home. Larne thoroughly deserved to progress, but we certainly made them work for it."
Result Four:
Competition: Premier Intermediate League | Round: 8/20 | Opponent: Tobermore United (NIR/III) | Their Position: 2/11 | Their Streak: WWWDL
Our Highest Rated Player: Josh Doyle (NIR) - 7.2 | Our Position: 1/11 | Our Points Tally: 17pts | Our Streak: DWLLD
"Things didn't get any easier as we then met in-form Tobermore United in the league, the club we've edged past in the standings. It was an encounter that would end goalless at Fortwilliam Park. It keeps us top, though almost didn't as Bangor were beating Portstewart 0-3 but somehow succumbed to draw 3-3."
Result Five:
Competition: Intermediate Cup | Round: First | Opponent: Warrenpoint Town Reserves (NIR/-) | Their Position: - | Their Streak: -
Our Highest Rated Player: Gary Workman (NIR) - 9.2 | Our Position: - | Our Points Tally: - | Our Streak: WLLDW
"October concluded with a return to cup action, as the Intermediate Cup got going with a hosting of Warrenpoint Town Reserves. We ran out clear 4-0 winners, with Michael O'Hanlon, Daire Rooney and Nick Beta scoring before our talisman Gary Workman grabbed a deserved goal for four. Into the next stage!"
Overview:
That form looks worse than it actually is, given the two defeats were narrow cup losses versus higher tiered opponents and the draw was a good point away to a title rival. The two wins were dominant in terms of goals. Therefore, I'm still very pleased with how our season is going at the moment.
Current Tactics:
Other:
As you can see above, we've had two players depart the club. Back-up goalkeeper Pat Saunders and back-up central midfielder Aaron Harris were given free transfers, neither has featured much (at all in Saunders' case) and wanted out so I released them from their non-contract deals. They won't be missed, but I wish them the best.

Update 004: September 2019
I started my career in the Northern Irish third tier with Lisburn Distillery with three victories from four games in August, which including a surprise League Cup win over top-flight Crusaders. We did lose to Bangor in league action, but gained six points over Banbridge Town and Limavady United.
September saw the Steel & Sons Cup and County Antrim Shield join the schedule, along with Premier Intermediate League fixtures with Dollingstown, Portstewart and Moyola Park. Here's how we got on:
Match Round-Up:
Result One:
Competition: Steel & Sons Cup | Round: Second | Opponent: Shankill United (NIR/IV) | Their Position: - | Their Streak: -
Our Highest Rated Player: Daire Rooney (NIR) - 8.6 | Our Position: - | Our Points Tally: - | Our Streak: WLWWD
"With a heavily rotated squad (10 changes), we unfortunately exited the Steel & Sons Cup at the second round as Shankill United eliminated us 16-15 (!) on penalties; the match finished 3-3 after extra time, they had gone up 1-0 before clawing it back from 1-3. Very disappointing, but not surprising when it goes to spot-kicks on Football Manager."
Result Two:
Competition: County Antrim Shield | Round: First | Opponent: Carrick Rangers (NIR/II) | Their Position: - | Their Streak: LDLWL
Our Highest Rated Player: Mikey Withers (NIR) & Gary Workman (NIR) - 7.9 | Our Position: - | Our Points Tally: - | Our Streak: LWWDW
"We more than made amends for that Shankill United defeat six days later, as we knocked out a higher division club in cup football for the second time this season in Carrick Rangers. Nick Beta and Mikey Withers were the heroes as we beat the Championship outfit away from home, to progress into the quarter-finals; where we'll face Premiership side Larne - a team I managed back on Football Manager 2014."
Result Three:
Competition: Premier Intermediate League | Round: 4/20 | Opponent: Dollingstown (NIR/III) | Their Position: 8/11 | Their Streak: WWLLL
Our Highest Rated Player: Nick Beta (NIR) - 8.8 | Our Position: 2/11 | Our Points Tally: 9pts | Our Streak: WWDWW
"Back in the Premier Intermediate League, we eased to victory at Planters Park against Dollingstown thanks to a brace from Nick Beta; who was brilliant. Good to see us winning these type of matches... we must!"
Result Four:
Competition: Premier Intermediate League | Round: 5/20 | Opponent: Portstewart (NIR/III) | Their Position: 4/11 | Their Streak: DDLLW
Our Highest Rated Player: Timmy Clarke (NIR) - 8.3 | Our Position: 2/11 | Our Points Tally: 12pts | Our Streak: WDWWW
"Important three points, again. Portstewart were defeated at New Grosvenor Stadium after Kevin Braniff and Timmy Clarke put us 2-0 up, Ryan McKendry did find one back for our visitors but thankfully we held on."
Result Four:
Competition: Premier Intermediate League | Round: 6/20 | Opponent: Moyola Park (NIR/III) | Their Position: 5/11 | Their Streak: WWLLW
Our Highest Rated Player: Timmy Clarke (NIR) - 7.1 | Our Position: 2/11 | Our Points Tally: 13pts | Our Streak: DWWWD
"Poor to drop points on the road versus Moyola Park, especially as we had the chance to go joint top as Tobermore United had the weekend off; due to the odd number of teams in the Premier Intermediate League. Bit of a bottle job, to be honest."
Overview:
We head into October still in 2nd, two points off Tobermore United after missing the chance to go level on points. Bangor remain in 3rd but, like Tobermore, have a game in hand on us. Cup-wise we're still in the County Antrim Shield and League Cup, but face no more action in the Steel & Sons Cup sadly. The Irish Cup and Intermediate Cup are yet to get underway, though the latter will do so next month.
